Much of what we know today of those events comes from contemporary accounts by secular writers; their perspective is balanced by a document written from a monastic point of view and now available for the first time in English.

The Hystoria Constantinopolitana relates the adventures of Martin of Pairis, an abbot of the Cistercian Order who participated in the plunder of the city, as recorded by his monk Gunther. Written to justify the abbot's pious pilferage of scared relics and his transporting them back to his monastery in Alsace, it is a work of Christian metahistory that shows how the sack of Constantinople fits into God's plan for humanity, and that deeds done under divine guidance are themselves holy and righteous.

The Hystoria Constantinopolitana is one of the most complex and sophisticated historiographical work of its time, deftly interweaving moods and motifs, themes and scenes. In producing the first English translation and analysis of this work, Alfred Andrea has captured the full flavor of the original with its alternating section of prose and poetry. His introduction to the text provides background on Gunther's life and work and explores the monk's purpose in writing the Hystoria Constantinopolitana—not the least of which was extolling the virtues of Abbott Martin, who was sometimes accuse of laxity by his superiors in the Order.

Gunther's work is significant for its effort to deal with problems raised by the participation of monks in the Crusades, making it a valuable contribution to both crusading and monastic history. The Capture of Constantinople adds to our knowledge of the Fourth Crusade and provides unusual insight into the attitudes of the participants and the cultural-intellectual history of the early thirteenth century.

Fantastic edition

Just for the record, I am reviewing the edition, not Gunther of Pairis as a historian. That sort of work is best left to academic journals, and frankly, due to the perishibility of ancient and medieval manuscripts, we are fortunate to have as many as we do.

Gunther of Pairis was a monk attached to the monastery of Pairis, which despite any phonetic similarities to the modern capital of France, was actually in the diocese of Basel, although it was a fair bit north of that city. Gunther's abbot, Martin, travelled with the Fourth Crusade and participated in the sacking of Constantinople, going so far as to make off with a whole score of relics. Due to the controversy surrounding "sacrum furtum", Gunther wrote this as an apologetic account on behalf of Martin. However, it is not just a simple defence of a relic thief, but a rather elaborate weaving together of high medieval monastic thought and literature. Andrea remarks on how long he spent studying the text after he figured that this would be a rather straight-forward translation. This is a highly complex document, with parts written in verse, and one that needs heavy contextualizing for it to be understood.

With that out of the way, I can get on to reviewing the edition, and I can say that it is superb. The translation is crisp and flows very well, and the first 60 pages of the book discuss Gunther of Pairis' life, his learning, the intellectual climate fostered by Citeaux and the value of this work as history. This introduction goes a long way towards giving the reader a good understanding of the text, and it is very clear that Andrea knows what he is talking about. I was initially disappointed that there was no Latin text attached, especially since Andrea said that he had explored all of the relevant manuscripts, but he notes later on that a new Latin critical edition had just been released before the publication, of this book, so I see no need for there to be another one, as it would just be superfluous. The middle 70 pages of the book make up the text, and this is where my sole criticism lies and the reason that I have only given this book four stars. It is followed by 50 pages of endnotes. These notes are excellent and provide a lot of insight into the text. The problem is that each and every page of the text references several of these endnotes, and it becomes very tiresome to constantly flip back and forth. Had those notes been placed at the bottom of the page as footnotes, we would probably end up with something akin to Whitby's 'Chronicon Paschale' where 50% of the page space is devoted to notes, but at least they are in front of the reader.

In sum, this is an excellent translation. It has a fantastic introduction, is a very learned volume and has great notes. Its only flaw lies in the fact that the numerous and useful notes are confined to the back of the book, where they must be referenced constantly by flipping back and forth.

Good stuff

The Capture of Constantinople is an interesting history of the disastrous and controversial Fourth Crusade. Written by the monk Gunther of Pairis, it tells of the sacking of Greek Orthodox Constantinople by the Roman Catholic crusaders, casting the abbot Martin of Pairis as a hero. (In reality, Martin was viewed in an ambiguous light for his theft of holy relics from Orthodox churches.) Gunther serves as a kind of apologist for his abbot. The text is engaging and easy to read.

For instance, he finds that the character Mulan is not of Chinese origin and that Central Asian influences are to be found in language, religion, governance, and other fundamental characteristics of Chinese culture. As Victor Mair writes in the Foreword, "While not everyone will acquiesce in the entirety of Dr. Chen's findings, no reputable scholar can afford to ignore them with impunity."

These "foreign"-origin elements were largely the legacy of the Tuoba, whose descendants in fact dominated China's political and cultural stage for nearly a millennium. Long before the Mongols, the Tuoba set a precedent for "using the civilized to rule the civilized" by attracting a large number of sedentary Central Asians to East Asia. This not only added a strong pre-Islamic Iranian layer to the contemporary Sinitic culture but also commenced China's golden age under the cosmopolitan Tang dynasty, whose nominally "Chinese" ruling house is revealed by Chen to be the biological and cultural heir of the Tuoba.

After nearly half a century of isolation, China has recently reemerged as an integral member of the global economy and the international political structure. Since its rise has been so explosive, however, knowledge of Chinese culture and society in other countries is still sketchy and often highly distorted. Indeed, so long and so extraordinarily complicated is the Chinese historical record, and so richly complex is Chinese literature, that modern Chinese citizens themselves are often confused about many details of their nation's past.

Virtually everyone has heard of the brave heroine Mulan, who rides off to war (as in the Disney movie), and most of us are familiar with the mythical unicorn that heralds the coming of a sage who will rule justly, yet we see them through a glass darkly. The wonder of this book, Multicultural China in the Early Middle Ages, is that it offers a completely new look at many aspects of Chinese history and culture that heretofore may have seemed bewildering or even absurd.

The author of the present volume, Sanping Chen, has the great virtue of being able to examine the past with a fresh eye. He does not take any received text or tradition at face value. Instead, he closely reexamines all the available evidence and subjects secondary interpretations to intense, critical scrutiny. The results of this type of inquiry are frequently surprising and in many cases revelatory. Yet Dr. Chen is not an iconoclast purely for the sake of iconoclasm. Instead, his goal is simply to penetrate the countless layers of obscurity and misrepresentation to get at the truth of what really happened in the past. More than any other Chinese historian that I know of, Sanping Chen is determined to confront historical data directly and without any presuppositions or agenda whatsoever.

From lengthy, ongoing discussions with Dr. Chen over the years, I have come to realize that his unusual approach to Chinese history results from deeply held principles. Among these the most important is that the historian is duty bound to report his findings, regardless of their implications. A corollary of this principle is that the historian may not lie about or color what he discovers concerning the past. For Dr. Chen, this becomes a moral imperative, such that he cannot remain silent when confronted with the facts of history.

Although Dr. Chen not infrequently mentions the prehistoric period (Neolithic, Bronze Age, and early Iron Age), the early period (the classical era or era of antiquity), and the late imperial period, his main focus is on the medieval period (roughly the first millennium AD). Many events that were profoundly formative for the future of East Asian civilization occurred during this period: the advent of Buddhism, the rise of Taoism as a religion, the first stirrings of the written vernacular, the perfection of literary genres, the incorporation into the Chinese body politic of non-Sinitic peoples in all directions, and so forth. Despite the crucial role this period played in the development of East Asian history, it is relatively little studied and, in general, poorly known, whether by specialists or by laypersons. This is particularly so for the first half of the period, and it is precisely that stretch of five or six hundred years upon which Dr. Chen places his greatest emphasis.

What, then, are a few of Dr. Chen's astonishing discoveries that he presents in this book?

Mulan was not Chinese.

The East Asian "unicorn" was very different, both in appearance and significance, from the one-horned creature of Western imagination.

The royal house of the Tang Dynasty, which constituted the apogee of premodern Chinese civilization, was in large measure "barbaric."

Despite general Chinese dislike for dogs, canine imagery and terminology have been positively utilized among certain significant groups in East Asia.

Both the Huns and the Bulgars have their congeners in East Asia.

Iranian peoples were prominent in trade, religion, and other noteworthy aspects of medieval Chinese society.

Naming practices changed dramatically in response to influences from the Steppe.

One of China's most revered poets, Bai Juyi, had intimate connections with Central Asia.

Sanping Chen's ability to make, and to firmly document, these remarkable discoveries is due to his open-mindedness and insightfulness, but above all to his persistent inquisitiveness. While not everyone will acquiesce to the entirety of Dr. Chen's findings, no reputable scholar can afford to ignore them with impunity.

Dr. Chen's expositions of his discoveries are captivating in and of themselves. When combined with the solid content that they convey, his chapters make for compelling reading. Chapter 1. Introduction

Washington, D.C., has been called the "internship capital" of the United States, and with 20,000 interns every summer, the name probably fits. More than any other city, Washington welcomes interns with open arms, giving students the opportunity to see how the United States government functions up close and personal. In Congress, media organizations, lobbying offices, and nonprofits, interns open mail and answer phones and run errands but they also write policy briefs, get published, and hear Members of Congress use words they wrote.

Washington is at once a small town whose streets and neighborhoods will quickly become familiar to you and a huge metropolitan area where you can find internships in a vast number of fields. As Director of Penn in Washington at the University of Pennsylvania, I have helped hundreds of students find internships in Washington. Some students know very little about how our government actually works and want to just be there to soak it all in; where better than the front desk of a congressional office? Others have been close observers of D.C. politics and are ready to leap in and join the fray; for these students, a summer at the Republican or Democratic National Committee feels like the center of the world, and in some cases these experiences and the contacts made have led to entry-level political jobs and exciting careers in politics. Other students have very specific ideas about what they want to do; a student a few years ago was particularly interested in Brazil's economy, had spent a semester in Brazil, and had studied Portuguese. Not only was the Brazil U.S. Business Council happy to have him as an intern, when he graduated the following year they eagerly offered him a permanent position.

As in other industries and cities, internships can and often do lead to offers of permanent employment. While not all interns go to Washington with the stated goal of securing full-time work, an internship is certainly the first step on that ladder. In addition to making your resume look good, Washington is an exciting place to be, particularly if you take full advantage of the opportunities available to you. Washington is a place where people come to be heard, and typically these people like an audience, which means speaking events are often open to the public. D.C. is also a natural location for political demonstrations and protests, which are fascinating either as participant or observer. A center of American history and culture, Washington is a popular destination for tourists, the site of numerous national landmarks and monuments, the world's largest museum complex, galleries, universities, cathedrals, performing arts centers, and institutions. So while this book is focused on helping you get the most out of your internship, I also spend a little time encouraging you to get the most out of Washington itself.

This book fills the gap between what students typically know about Washington internships and what you need to know to find the right internship and use it to launch an exciting career. Beginning with an introduction to the major institutions in Washington and types of internships within each, the book guides students through planning, the search process, securing the internship, and using it as a stepping stone to an entry-level job. Along the way the chapters provide advice on a range of issues, from improved communication skills to knowing what to wear. The book offers tips from students, Washington insiders, and internship sponsors, and provides useful internet resources.

Who Can Use This Book

You might think that the typical D.C. intern is a college junior or senior with a political science major. While there certainly are thousands of students that fit that description, not only do interns come from all kinds of majors, but they also include younger and older candidates. I have successfully placed English, communications, history, and other majors in a range of internships where sponsors are looking for strong writers, clear thinkers, and self-starters. As for age/education requirements, they also vary widely and many sponsors are very flexible. High school students are increasingly being offered the opportunity to intern, though those positions are less common and often the work is more likely to be administrative than substantive. College graduates who didn't get around to deciding that they wanted to work in Washington until later in their academic careers can often start out as a summer intern after they graduate and either use the time (off the clock, of course) to job hunt or endear themselves to their internship sponsor such that they transition to a full-time permanent position.

Whether you don't know the first thing about Washington or you've been reading the Washington Post online for the past three years, this book can help you think through the best internship options for you, how to get in the door, and how to take full advantage once you're there.

How To Use This Book

The book is laid out in a (I hope) fairly logical order; having purchased this book, you've made the decision to focus your internship search on Washington. That's step one. Step two is to get the lay of the land; with so many options available to you, it's necessary to start limiting your search to a few broad categories of D.C. internship sponsors. In Chapter 2, I provide detailed descriptions of employers in various categories, and include lots of comments from students who interned in these places so that you have a very solid sense of not only who these sponsors are (some of whom are also quoted in the chapter), but also what you would be spending your time doing and what you can expect to take away from the experience. Once you've decided for or against internships in the seven sectors laid out in Chapter 2, you're ready for Chapter 3 (and step three), which gets down to finding specific potential sponsors. Resources that you can use to develop your list and important strategic advice are provided in this chapter. At this point, list in hand, you are ready for step four. Chapter 4 is chock full of very Washington-specific advice on preparing the best and most appropriate application materials. This chapter also provides interviewing tips and suggestions from internship sponsors on what they think is most important in a cover letter/resume, and who their ideal intern is. Step five is often overlooked; this includes everything that happens after you get an internship offer. In addition to practical aspects, which include finding a place to stay and making sure your wardrobe is up to the task, you also need to think about what you want to get from your internship experience and then make sure you do everything it takes to achieve your goals. The remaining chapters help you do all that, and also help you orient yourself in Washington and include some ideas on must see/do things in D.C.

When To Use This Book

Students often ask me when the best year/summer of college is to participate in an internship. Policy internships are great for students between their junior and senior year of college because they have honed their writing skills, they may have definite ideas about particular issues they want to explore, and they may have some qualifications (like courses taken) that are attractive to internship sponsors. But an internship earlier in college and increasingly in high school can help students gain skills that will make them stronger internship candidates, which will lead to better internships, higher-quality work experiences, and stronger contacts with supervisors and mentors. Another advantage to participating in internships in high school and after your first year of college is that it provides an opportunity to rule out some avenues so that by the time you get to your junior year, you are very clear about what kind of internship you want to do and where that might lead you. One easy way to get your foot in the door is to intern in the district office (the local office where you live, rather than the office in Washington, D.C.) of your Member of Congress or Senator early in your college career, perhaps before or after your freshman year or even while you are in high school. If the timing is right and you're more interested in politics than policymaking, you could also volunteer for a local congressional campaign. While the work will be largely administrative (though that may not always be the case), working in a district office or on a campaign is a great way to get to know staff, familiarize yourself with how that office functions, and maybe even get to know the Congressperson or Senator. If you still have the policy/politics bug the following year, getting an internship in the Washington office of your Senator or Member of Congress will probably be a sure thing (assuming you've followed all the advice this book provides), and even if after working in the district office or on a campaign you don't think a congressional office or on a political campaign is where you want to be, you will have made some contacts that are likely to be helpful as you apply to other internships in Washington.

As for when in the year interning is best done, the vast majority of interns use their summers to do an internship because they are focused on classes and other on-campus activities during the school year. One alternative to consider is taking a semester off and doing an internship during the academic year. In a city such as Washington, where internship sponsors are faced with a feast or famine depending on the time of year, you may get accepted to a competitive internship program in the fall or spring that would have gone to more qualified candidates in the vastly larger summer intern pool.

Finally, as to when you should start your application process, as the timeline in Chapter 4 makes clear, ideally you will start thinking about your summer internship the summer before. A number of the most prestigious internships in Washington have November 1 deadlines; which means you'll have to start collecting your materials and putting applications together in late summer.

Let's turn now to the actual internship sponsors in Washington. The next chapter will help you think about where you want to be and what you want to get out of the Washington experience.

About the Author

The murder of Sarah Cornell, or Church vs. State

Sixty years before Lizzie Borden and her legendary axe splashed blood over the name of Fall River, Massachusetts, the growing community was the site of a murder that put the industrial revolution and the Methodist faith on trial.

In December 1832, unmarried and pregnant mill worker Sarah Maria Cornell was found hanging from a haystack support pole outside Fall River. A prominent Methodist minister named Ephraim Kingsbury Avery was accused of seducing and then murdering her. When Avery went to trial, two large and opposing institutions faced off.

The Fall River industrialists portrayed Sarah Cornell as an innocent victim of a "wicked married man". Kasserman wrote, "In trying to clear her name, they protected their own." Their concerns were valid: in 1832 more women were leaving their parents' homes to take jobs in mills and factories, and if these workplaces became known as hotbeds of immorality, parental intervention could deprive them of badly needed workers.

The Methodist Episcopal Church supported the opposite impression of the victim: the more lascivious she appeared to have been, the less likely it was that Avery alone had a reason to kill her. Methodism, with its emphasis on emotionality and easy salvation, was regarded with suspicion in a society dominated by the austere Calvinist Congregational Church. The Methodist leaders could ill afford to have a scandal topple the precarious position the church occupied in Jacksonian America. Apparently Avery's lawyers, in condemning Sarah Cornell as a harlot, were the first to use the character of the female victim as a defense strategy.

Although I enjoyed this book, it might not be suitable reading for those who prefer a lighter, creative nonfiction approach to crime writing. Kasserman adheres faithfully to the record, and does not condense much for the sake of clarity or smooth flow. Personally, I'm glad that he was so thorough. Such solid research contributes greatly to our understanding of early American society.

Truly an Outrage

This is an extremely well written book. A young girl,
a factory worker in Lowell, MA in the 1830's was found
hanged in a most gruesome way. She had left a note that
if anything happened to her to go to this certain
Methodist minister who was very well known. Authorities
discovered she was pregnant when hanged. On the day
she asked for time off in the afternoon to meet someone.
Later it was discovered it was the minister who denied
he had murdered her. Thus began a trial and what a trial.
In some ways I was surprised authorities were as far
advanced as they were in finding information. Although
it was biased right from the first. The girl had had a
checkered past and they tore her past into bits trying
to make her look as bad as they could. Of course to their
way of thinking the minister could not be guilty of doing
the least wrong thing so you can well imagine how it was
going to turn out. But in the end-you have heard how
some get their just desserts so to speak. To put it
mildly I do not think I would have liked to have lived
in that time. It's strange when you think about it;
moderately modern times really did not even begin in
earnest until 1900 and then we had a few years to go
at that.

Murder most local

Few would realize the intrigue of a local court case in 1832. The first reading left me a bit confused but interested so a second attempt armed with a map CT, RI and MA helped as did a pad and pen for character notes and references as the presentation is a bit hard to follow. It would make a great movie.

A must read for all Creoles!

This book is a must read for all Creoles! Jolivette really gave justice to all the misinformation that has been said of Creoles. Race as it has been applied to Creoles has been nothing more than a political concept that ignored the true culture and Jolivette really explains how culture should be of more importance than race. I'm editing my earlier review to say that although Creoles were living as a separate ethnic group and should have their own separate ethnic category, I no longer think Creoles should be in a separate category from African Americans as we should all be coming together and being divided only helps white supremacy. However I think it's very wrong for the government to attach labels to people without letting them self identify and we're supposed to be a free country? The "one drop rule" is pretty much telling us that whites could care less whether we claim our European ancestry or not and this is another thing that makes we wonder if we should keep pursuing a separate category. Also in history when Mulattoes were able to self identify it caused a big division between them and blacks and Mulattoes were used to serve the agenda of whites. Creoles have every right to be proud of our heritage just like everybody else. We still have African symbols in our culture like Voodoo but most Creoles are Catholic and blacks have been mentally conditioned to think of African religion as paganism or everything negative and recent evidence shows that Voodoo was the most ancient form of African Spirituality before any of these other religions came about. This is another reason why we should be proud of our African heritage. I think the history of the Mardi Gras Indians should've been mentioned in the book but Jolivette shows how the Native American Indians contributed to Creole culture and each ethnicity( French, African, Indian & Spanish) deserve equal attention. I'm more proud to be Creole now because I kind of strayed away from the Creole culture due to society pressure to just think in black and white. And now with the internet I can reach out to other Creoles. I also recommend watching the film Spirit of a Culture: Cane River Creoles.

As I read this book, I was constantly taking notes. It gave me a more indepth look into my culture as it incorporated the American Indian history and identity of our many, different ethnic backgrounds. I definitely recommend this book to all readers of multiracial background interests.
