Highly recommended for a wide audience
By Serge van Neck
Retrieving Our Spiritual Heritage is a chronological compilation of lectures and essays by Professor Suheil Bushrui, delivered during his distinguished tenure as the Bahá'í Chair for World Peace at the University of Maryland from 1994 to 2005. As the book's introduction makes clear, the various talks and essays all share the same essential message but are tailored to a particular occasion and audience. They address a wide range of topics, from globalization to environmental stewardship, interreligious dialogue and higher education, to the respective roles of the United States and the United Nations in promoting world unity. Several of the talks contained in this book were delivered in the presence of eminent leaders of government.

In the series of dissertations selected for publication in this book, Professor Bushrui's overarching thesis is that in order for humanity to come together in peace and unity, it must first reconnect with its spiritual origins, which he describes as the "perennial wisdom" or "that `universal and unanimous tradition' common to all cultures and expressing, albeit in a myriad different ways, a common vision of the plight of man." Drawing not just on the Bahá'í Writings but on countless other literary sources including poets, historians and philosophers both ancient and modern, not to mention his own extensive learning and insight, Professor Bushrui lays out his carefully crafted argument, presented logically and systematically, that what the world needs first and foremost is the recognition that human spirituality--far from being obsolete in our modern, technologically advanced society--is an integral part of human existence and an indispensable factor in its continued survival. He advocates for the return of this "spiritual heritage," in the form of virtues, morals and a sense of the sacred, to all of mankind's political, philosophical, scientific and economic endeavors. Throughout his talks, he highlights the importance of interreligious and intercultural dialogue, based on the fact that all cultures and religions are interconnected by history, and that these interconnections are now being multiplied through the advance of technology and the market forces of globalization.

One of the things I appreciated about this book is that it is accessible to a general readership and assumes no prior knowledge of the Bahá'í Faith, even in the few instances where the audience is primarily Bahá'í. Although all fourteen works are masterfully written and address vitally important issues, the ones that spoke to me most were those concerned with interfaith understanding as an essential prerequisite for world peace; the application of ethics and justice to the process of globalization; and the broadening of education to encompass a holistic approach that balances intellectual pursuits with wisdom and morality. However, I found the entire collection an enjoyable and edifying read.

Given that these are discrete lectures and essays presented to different audiences over the course of a decade, the fact that Professor Bushrui reuses some of the same key quotations and passages in subsequent talks would not have been noticeable to his audiences. Read as a compilation, however, this repetition can be somewhat distracting to the reader at first, and may even evoke a sense of déjà vu. Thankfully the book's introduction prepares us for this inevitable side effect and it does not take long to get accustomed to. Moreover, what initially seems like mere repetition, upon later reflection turns out to be a shrewd repurposing of the same passages, endowing them with new layers of meaning.

Perhaps my only criticism of Professor Bushrui's overall tone (a criticism which, admittedly, is motivated by my own immersion in the fields of technology and science), is that his comments at times seem overly disparaging of technological and intellectual pursuits. However, as they are aimed at rekindling an awareness of the spiritual underpinnings of humanity, and consequently must take a stand against the untrammeled dominance of materialism in human activity and learning, this tone is both understandable and expected. Taken as a whole, the book leaves one with the impression that its author seeks only to establish a proper balance, and not to introduce spirituality at the cost of material progress.

Retrieving Our Spiritual Heritage calls on people of all religious, cultural, economic, political and academic backgrounds to recognize the common spiritual nature of humanity, to identify the universal values shared by all, and to use this understanding to raise the level of public discourse in the pursuit of world unity and peace. As such I highly recommend it as an essential resource not just for Bahá'ís but for all like-minded people looking to contribute to the betterment of their communities and society as a whole.

Excellent read on our spiritual heritage and values.
By Aleksey Sopyyev
Professor Bushrui represents the generation, who bore spiritual asset of our civilization to the 21st century. His book "Retrieving Our Spiritual Heritage" directs our look deep into the depth of our vast spiritual heritage in literature, poetry and religion. In this book Suheil Bushrui searches and finds ancient links of human spirit to the culture of the present. In the book's and chapters instances Bushrui alludes that our cultural heritage stems out of our spiritual values. The crises we currently undergo in Bushrui's view, represent the symptom of the crisis of our integrity, trustworthiness, truthfulness.

I recommend this book as insightful and thoughtful journey into the spiritual legacy of humanity for everyone, who is interested in the roots of our spirituality, values and virtues.

The Genius of the Beast: A Radical Re-Vision of Capitalism, by Howard Bloom

Is global capitalism on its last legs? Is the era of American leadership over? Has the West begun a decline into a new Dark Age? Does American civilization deserve to survive? These are the unnerving questions raised by the Great Crash of 2009.

This book presents a radically new answer, insisting that global society has only begun to realize its full potential. Author Howard Bloom argues that there’s a hidden mandate beneath the surface of capitalism: "It’s struggling to whisper and rumble its message to you and me. That hidden imperative can lift us from economic crisis, can make us a leader in the next-generation economy, and can dramatically upgrade our ability to empower our fellow human beings." Bloom sees crisis as opportunity, opportunity for the whole human race.

In more than eighty short, fast chapters, insights appear suddenly, like the quick bursts of flashbulbs, taking the reader on a sweeping tour of human history, from the Stone Age to the present. Every chapter conveys a radically new way to see the astonishing mechanism we call "Western Civilization." Bloom marvels at how humans have turned toxic waste into food and fuel, trash into treasure, and garbage into gold. He shows how we've produced material miracles based on immaterial things—passion, persistence, and fantasy. He shows that what many regard as the end is just the beginning. The beginning of something you've never before imagined.

The author explains why the secret to capitalism’s next great leap does not lie in new financial tricks, but in tapping things right under our noses in radically new ways—that is, tapping our imagination, our desire to feel useful, our desire to help others, and our desire to be recognized for contributing to the welfare of humanity. The key to next-generation capitalism lies in a big-picture view that's utterly unlike anything you've previously perceived. A big-picture view that will startle you. A big-picture view with which you can ignite the world, get a new handle on your life, and help transform society.

This brilliant, inspirational work of daring ideas and breathtaking research offers more than hope. It offers unseen levels of understanding. Understanding that can literally redefine what it means to be a human being.

—Robin Fox, Rutgers University

"Impressive and stimulating. A tremendously enjoyable work."
—James Fallows, national correspondent for the Atlantic

—Monsters and Critics

"I really could not put it down. Ultimately, I found the book a tremendously optimistic, motivating, exciting read that I look forward to tackling again."
—NewsReal

"Capitalism does indeed work, scholar Bloom boldly affirms in this at-once brash and well-considered treatise, in which, in his own words, he applies a new lens to viewing the entire course of Western civilization. . . . The problem . . . [lies] in the way capitalism has come to be viewed. This long, provocative, needs-to-be-read book seeks to rectify that situation. What he explains here, in detailed arguments, is that ‘capitalism and the Western system hide astonishing abilities.’ Spend time with this eye-opener."

Brilliant salesmanship
By Kennedy
I admit I bought this thinking it had been written by Harold Bloom, the Harvard literary don. So I was surprised when I began reading Genius of the Beast and came up against this writer's hyperbolic style, a style which would be familiar to any advertising copywriter.

Bloom is described somewhere in the multiple blurbs all over this book as a marketing genius, and that's what I'll happily take him as. As a revolutionary thinker? His argument boils down to "Technology will save us", nothing I haven't read anywhere before.

What is exceptional about the book is the way Bloom hypes his ideas. He's broadly read, and seems to enjoy synthesizing ideas from a variety of specializations and making them his own.

The book is conceived in a series of 'mini' chapters, each of which present one idea simply, and then, in a snowball effect, Bloom rolls them all together.

Personally, I found his insanely over-amped style (which is reflected in the tone of some of the other reviews here) to be counter-productive. Like the language of brilliant advertising, it's there to gloss over something.

However, on the positive side, Bloom is clearly a positive and ambitious thinker, not to be dismissed.

full of errors, lack of clarity and clear end goal
By HPN
As other reviewers have written, Howard Bloom's "The Genius of the Beast" is unorganized and haphazardly written. It is also full of errors, stretched analogies and made up word jumbles (secular genesis machine?!?). Frankly, it reads as a conclusion in search for any data point that might support it when squinted at just the right way.

As far as errors are concerned, the book has a complete misunderstanding of biology which Bloom claims helps to explain the cycle of boom/bust in a human economy. I'm a biologist, so these errors jump out at me, and I shudder to think about the number of errors in the rest of the book that I didn't pick up because they related to other fields of expertise. For example, Bloom goes on for an entire chapter about the Dictyostelium slime mold, yet continuously calls it a bacterium (which it is not, and is like writing about dogs and calling them snails). He also has no idea about the biological role of microtubules inside the cell, yet uses their inherent dynamic instability (but a small bit of their cellular function) to try and explain worldwide economies. These and his honeybee and evolution analogies show that he has no understanding about these topics besides what he managed to glean from reading one or two magazine articles about them (including references in the back to primary literature doesn't mean he read or understood them). And if he did understand them, then letting these errors into his prose suggests he doesn't care about accuracy but only in furthering his thesis (SPOILER: which is that capitalism is good. No idea how this makes it a radical re-vision of the topic).

Besides several instances where sentences and a half (literally) are repeated one after the other - hello copy/paste and proofreading editor - the writing is also atrocious. Does the book really need paragraphs with 6 questions in a row? Can he discuss a topic without anthropomorphizing inanimate objects[1]? Will a chapter ever end where it doesn't promote a straw man that is magically answered in the next chapter?

This is a common paragraph from the book:

"Could it have been a pattern built into our biology? A pattern that's 3.85 billion years old? Or older? A pattern we can even see at work in the early cosmos? Could the cycle of boom and crash be propelled by the pendulum of repurposing? Could it be a manifestation of a search-and-create strategy? The fission-fusion strategy? ...5 more random questions... Could it really be that you and I are part of a search engine of a universe probing her possibilities? Could boom and bust really be turns in the wheel of an evolutionary search engine, a secular genesis machine?"

As you can see, Bloom has a habit of making up word jumbles, like "secular genesis machine". This phrase is introduced early in the book to theoretically provide some sort of focus. He applies it to gazillion items in the book, most of which make no sense because those concepts by definition have no specific endgame, though he claims they do. Non-biological evolution (and more importantly selection) of systems and technologies seem to be a topic of particular interest to him, and the book is literally chapter after chapter of descriptions of boom and busts in world economies, caused by new technologies/discoveries (eg New World, railroad), even when he then says, 'not really, that 18xx bust wasn't caused by peak train happening". He then uses 'secular genesis machine' as literally some deux ex machina that magically makes everything work because the 'machine' is somehow searching for 'something' and so it must act like this.

In conclusion, the book could have been over 100 pages (>20%) shorter if some editor had trimmed the constant repetition and made Bloom focus a little more. It is replete with errors in at least one field (biology), both in the actual workings of items in that field (microtubules, Dicty, evolution) and how some biological theories can be re-imaged as applying to human endeavors. This probably applies to other fields discussed as well. The subtitle, "A Radical Re-vision of Capitalism" is unnecessarily grandiose, since in the end he just says capitalism isn't as bad as its opponents say. The book is not worth it.

Extraordinary
By J. Scott Shipman
Mr. Bloom may have a modern-day classic in this book. He has managed to perform a work of consilence on the history of man (life, really) and provide insight in the how's, what's, where's, and why's of capitalism and how we treat customers and each other. I must admit as a newcomer to Bloom's work, the first 130 pages left me wondering, "where is he going?" Bloom provides an extraordinary grasp of machinations and implications of capitalism, warts and all---he leaves no stone unturned in his critical assessments and his heart-felt endorsements. He provides not only reasons for hope, but proven tools and methods to get things done. The intellectual honesty and power of his thesis cannot be ignored. Strongest recommendation!

Review
Since the earliest days of the film industry, Texas has been prime real estate for the movies. From Canadian to Brownsville, from El Paso to Port Arthur, Texans have seen on-location filmmaking up close. With this book, you will enjoy an insider's look at Texas movies. Pack up The Movie Lover's Tour of Texas and hit the highway for a road trip. (Tom Copeland, Director, Texas Film Commission)

If you love movies, settle in for a chatty visit with a friendly tour guide. Whether you plan to travel the movie landscapes of Texas or just love watching movies with a Texas connection, The Movie Lover's Tour of Texas is the guidebook you need. Vonler sets a swift pace, deftly separating the 'reel' from the 'real' in the lore of Texas movies, serving up the gossipy details movie lovers crave ― where a movie was really filmed and who caused trouble on what set. (Jessie Gunn Stephens, author of The Book Lover's Tour of Texas)

"Vonler tackles every and all movies filmed or set in Texas...there are some hidden gems between the pages" (Martin Winchester Monitor)

". . . the author explores the state's cinematic presence dating back to more than 100 years.""Organized geographically, The Movie Lover's Tour of Texas juxtaposes "Reel-Life Tours" (which shows how the state is depicted on film) with "Real-Life Tours," which helps travelers navigate teh state's movie sites." (Lori Moffatt Texas Highways)

"It is a travel guide that invites you to tour the state from the comfort of your home, armed with a VCR or DVD and a bag of popcorn." (Glenn Dromgoole Lubbock Avalanche- Journal)

From "Miss Congeniality" to "The Westerner," Dr. Vonler clearly has spent a lot of time in the dark- and that's meant as a compliment. (Ron Franscell Beaumont Enterprise)

If you enjoy movies and road trips, this nifty guide combines insight on film locations with practical tourism tips. (Harry Shattuck The Houston Chronicle)

About the Author
Veva Vonler, Ph.D., is a native Texan and lifelong movie fan. Her love of movies was possibly instilled before she was born when her mother saw almost every movie shown in the Arcadia Theater in little Ranger, Texas, while pregnant and waiting for her husband to return from World War II. Love of the movies was a family affair. Her great Aunt Myrtle played the piano for the silents shown in the Thurber, Texas Opera House. At age 12, Vonler won the local newspaper's contest for predicting that year's Oscar winners, earning a three-month free pass to the Campus Theater in Denton, Texas. Her professional life has included teaching writing and literature, international consulting on education, and university administration. She has written for a number of academic and popular publications such as The New Rambler and Westward Magazine and has co-authored a composition/literature text published by Harcourt Brace.

Good book!
By Sonya Graham
Very interesting book for movie lovers. It covers the expansive history of filming taking place in Texas, written in a fun and delightful tale. The author's obvious love for the subject shines through, keeping it from being a mere history book. Very nice read.

The Best Book on Texas Movies
By Robert Huffaker
This beautifully written book is a history of movies set in Texas or filmed there. This fact-filled account is a superb tour guide, with maps and detailed directions to locations where these movies were filmed or set, along with information about Texas history and geography, and native Texas actors and their home towns. Its author, Veva Vonler, is a Ph.D. scholar of literature and cinema, and her engaging and conversational tone is a pleasure to read from cover to cover, especially while exploring the Lone Star State.

Use Google and save your money!
By BronzeHorse
I received this book as a gift, and even so, was very dissapointed (to say the least). Having a film degree myself, and armed with quite a bit of film knowledge, not to mention a bookshelf full of film reference books (and about 12,000+ DVD's and VHS tapes on my sagging shelves), I found this particular book sorely lacking in the meat and potatos department (this being the understatement of the year). The writer may have a PhD, but she comes off like a bored housewife with a barely passing knowledge of the films (or film in general) presented, and heck, her "knowledge" even seems Googled to me (basically, it's as if she read the reviews on IMDB for the films then re-wrote them in her style: very, very bland). For instance, "Rushmore" is a "strange little comedy." What? That's it? Are we talkin' the same ground-breaking Wes Anderson film here? Anderson, who went on to make "The Royal Tenenbaums," "The Darjeeling Limited," "The Fantastic Mr. Fox," and his masterpiece (along with "Bottle Rocket") gets the simplistic "strange little comedy?" Ummmm, okay. Each synopsis is very brief, and she left out quite a few classic films that diehard film lovers will find simply unforgivable. "Rolling Thunder" anyone? It only happens to be on Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez' top ten favorite film list year after year, and with Rodriguez (El Mariachi, Spy Kids series, Machete, Predators, Planet Terror, etc.) doing more for Texas filmmaking - since he shoots all his film in Texas, and brings many more here - than any other living filmmaker/producer in Texas (well, him and Richard Linklater) in recent memory, I would think it might get a small inclusion (being it was filmed at the famed Hot Wells Hotel in San Antonio, the stockyards, Sunset Station, among many, many other famous locales in San Antonio). As for regional horror films, forget it, buddy, all we get here is standard big Hollywood fare (with very few exceptions; "Race with the Devil" gets a brief mention though, I was shocked to read, although it's a Hollywood production shot by non-Texans). Famous comic artist and early San Antonio newscaster Pat Boyette's San Antonio output (namely the Ed Woodian cult classic "Dungeons of Harrow") is flat-out ignored, as is S.F. Brownrigg's famed cult Southern Gothic ouvre. Uber-rare Texas drive-in mess (in a fun way) "Enter the Devil," (AKA "Disciples of Death," 1972) shot in Terlingua and Lajitas? You're not going to read about it here, folks. What about the SA-lensed Douglas Sirk-wannabe amputee drama "Prelude to Happiness?" A virtual postcard of early 70's San Antonio? It's very rare, only played a few drive-in's, sure, but a little bit of digging will get you a copy. Where are the films of Dale Berry? H.G. Lewis (yes, "The Godfather of Gore" made the non-gore political film "Year of the Yahoo" in San Antonio)? I could go on and on. Anyway, you get my drift. My opinion, if you're really serious about Texas film locations, hit Google and get to work, this book leaves out so much information it's criminal. One step above vanity press. And by the way, I write all this from memory, so that should tell you something (and I ain't got no PhD, just a decent knowledge of the films of Texas, and films in general). Skip it.

The Three Laws of International Investment: National, Contractual, and International Frameworks for Foreign Capital, by Jeswald W. Salacus

International investments are governed by three different legal frameworks: 1) national laws of both the host country and the investor's home country; 2) contracts, whether between the investor and the host country or among investors and their associates; and 3) international law, consisting of applicable treaties, customs, and general principles of law. Together, these three frameworks profoundly influence the organization, operation, and protection of foreign
investments. Investors, government officials, and their legal counsel must therefore understand the complex interaction among these frameworks and how best to employ them to advance their interests.

This book examines the content of each of these three legal frameworks for international investment and explores how they influence the foreign investment process and the nature of investment transactions, projects, and enterprises. The book is divided into five parts. Part I, after explaining the contemporary nature and significance of international investment, examines the theoretical and practical links between law and the investment process. Part II explores the nature of national laws
regulating foreign investment. Part III considers of the various contractual frameworks for international investments, looking at their negotiation, content, and stability. Part IV sets out the international legal framework governing foreign investment, focusing on the content and nature of investment
treaties and on general principles. Finally, Part V discusses how the three legal frameworks interact with each other. By comprehensively examining each of the applicable legal frameworks, this book provides a vital overview of the laws, rules, and regulations governing foreign investment for lawyers, scholars, students, and government officials.

Astounding Wonder: Imagining Science and Science Fiction in Interwar America, by John Cheng

When physicist Robert Goddard, whose career was inspired by H. G. Wells's War of the Worlds, published "A Method of Reaching Extreme Altitudes," the response was electric. Newspaper headlines across the country announced, "Modern Jules Verne Invents Rocket to Reach Moon," while people from around the world, including two World War I pilots, volunteered as pioneers in space exploration. Though premature (Goddard's rocket, alas, was only imagined), the episode demonstrated not only science's general popularity but also its intersection with interwar popular and commercial culture. In that intersection, the stories that inspired Goddard and others became a recognizable genre: science fiction. Astounding Wonder explores science fiction's emergence in the era's "pulps," colorful magazines that shouted from the newsstands, attracting an extraordinarily loyal and active audience.

Pulps invited readers not only to read science fiction but also to participate in it, joining writers and editors in celebrating a collective wonder for and investment in the potential of science. But in conjuring fantastic machines, travel across time and space, unexplored worlds, and alien foes, science fiction offered more than rousing adventure and romance. It also assuaged contemporary concerns about nation, gender, race, authority, ability, and progress—about the place of ordinary individuals within modern science and society—in the process freeing readers to debate scientific theories and implications separate from such concerns.

Readers similarly sought to establish their worth and place outside the pulps. Organizing clubs and conventions and producing their own magazines, some expanded science fiction's community and created a fan subculture separate from the professional pulp industry. Others formed societies to launch and experiment with rockets. From debating relativity and the use of slang in the future to printing purple fanzines and calculating the speed of spaceships, fans' enthusiastic industry revealed the tensions between popular science and modern science. Even as it inspired readers' imagination and activities, science fiction's participatory ethos sparked debates about amateurs and professionals that divided the worlds of science fiction in the 1930s and after.

Review

Named in Locus magazine's 2012 Recommended Reading List

"John Cheng's highly readable book imaginatively shows the science fiction community's role in, and ways of, perceiving science. Cheng displays the ways in which readers incorporated science fiction into their lives, how this led them to think about science, and further still how some of them imagined aspects of that science into being. Displaying sure-handed use of challenging sources as well as deep knowledge of scientific as well as social theory, Astounding Wonder is cultural history at its best, and so much more."—Ian Gordon, author of Comic Strips and Consumer Culture

"Truly a multidisciplinary work with a unique perspective. . . . Cheng clearly loves his subject matter and infuses the book with a sense of humor."—Journal of American Culture

"A wide-ranging, meticulously researched account of the emergence of science fiction as a genre in the United States during the interwar period. . . . Cheng's interpretations are often sophisticated, supporting his wider claims about the popular imaginings of science within the pulps."—Science Fiction Studies

"Astounding Wonder is an absorbing book. It tells fascinating tales of an often-neglected period of SF's history and brings contemporary actors to life through frequent quotation from archival sources."—Los Angeles Review of Books

"Science fiction fans have long been the most avid aficionados in any arena of popular culture. Now with pioneering research and deep knowledge, John Cheng tells how thousands of Americans formed and sustained communities to pursue their visions of a future made better by science. Cheng's book chronicles a generation of young people inspired, engaged, and transformed by the possibilities of imaginary new worlds, ideas, and devices, so many of which inhabit our lives today. We live in a world they dreamed up, from space travel to cell phones, computers to nanotechnology. Cheng shows how readers and fans transformed science fiction from a marginal genre in the pulp magazine industry to a major cultural force."—Charles McGovern, College of William and Mary

The Bohemians, by Marquis de Pelleport, Anne Gedeon Lafitte

While the marquis de Sade was drafting The 120 Days of Sodom in the Bastille, another libertine marquis in a nearby cell was also writing a novel—one equally outrageous, full of sex and slander, and more revealing for what it had to say about the conditions of writers and writing itself. Yet Sade's neighbor, the marquis de Pelleport, is almost completely unknown today, and his novel, Les Bohémiens, has nearly vanished. Only a half dozen copies are available in libraries throughout the world. This edition, the first in English, opens a window into the world of garret poets, literary adventurers, down-and-out philosophers, and Grub Street hacks writing in the waning days of the Ancien Régime.

The Bohemians tells the tale of a troupe of vagabond writer-philosophers and their sexual partners, wandering through the countryside of Champagne accompanied by a donkey loaded with their many unpublished manuscripts. They live off the land—for the most part by stealing chickens from peasants. They deliver endless philosophic harangues, one more absurd than the other, bawl and brawl like schoolchildren, copulate with each other, and pause only to gobble up whatever they can poach from the barnyards along their route.

Full of lively prose, parody, dialogue, double entendre, humor, outrageous incidents, social commentary, and obscenity, The Bohemians is a tour de force. As Robert Darnton writes in his introduction to the book, it spans several genres and can be read simultaneously as a picaresque novel, a roman à clef, a collection of essays, a libertine tract, and an autobiography. Rediscovered by Darnton and brought gloriously back to life in Vivian Folkenflik's translation, The Bohemians at last takes its place as a major work of eighteenth-century libertinism.

Review

"Who could resist the pleasure of discovering not only an unknown eighteenth-century writer (scoundrel, adventurer, charmer, reprobate) but also his long-lost masterpiece—a picareque novel that is at once bildungsroman, autobiography, libertine treatise, and roman a clef? . . . Witty and outrageous, the novel was lost as soon as it was published in 1790. Today, beautifully translated into English by Folkenflik, it seems remarkably modern. . . . Essential."—Choice

"There is every reason to be grateful for this exemplary edition of a text that should have taken its place long ago on the shelves of any reader interested in eighteenth-century culture and philosophical tales. Vivian Folkenflik's elegant, literary translation respects the novel's playful energy and fully conveys what she describes as the 'semi-complicit relationship Pelleport establishes with his readers.'"—H-France Reviews

A Notable Rediscovery
By Steven Moore
This is a previously unknown example of the premodern French experimental novel, a genre that began with Rabelais and includes Barthelemy Aneau’s “Alector,” Charles Sorel’s anti-novels (a term he coined), Paul Scarron’s “Comic Novel” (alluded to near the end of chap. 9 of “The Bohemians”), Antoine Furetiere’s “Bourgeois Romance,” Adrien-Thomas de Subligny’s “The Mock Clelia,” Laurent Bordelon’s “Monsieur Oufle,” several of Marivaux’s early novels, Claude-Prosper de Crebillon’s “The Skimmer,” Denis Diderot’s “Jacques the Fatalist,” and Xavier de Maistre’s “Voyage around My Room.”

However, Pelleport’s main influences, as Robert Darnton points out in his very full and informative introduction, were “Don Quixote” and “Tristram Shandy.” Like Cervantes’ novel, “The Bohemians” is a road novel with many digressions, and like Sterne’s novel it is deliberately eccentric and metafictional. Though rather slapdash and not entirely successful, “The Bohemians” offers a raw look at life in 18th-century France--he shows that it was a boil that needed to be lanced by the Revolution--and how awful the life of an minor author was (is). It is more sexually explicit than most French novels of the period, bordering on pornography at times, though more farcical than obscene.

Darnton is to be congratulated for rescuing this outlandish novel from oblivion, and Vivian Folkenflik for her smooth, faithful translation. A model scholarly edition, the 148-page novel is preceded by 40 pages of front matter and followed by 44 pages of copious annotations (though the Scarron allusion is unnoted). Five stars for the edition, three stars for the novel itself.

Reason, Morality, and Law: The Philosophy of John Finnis, by John Keown, Robert P. George

John Finnis is a pioneer in the development of a new yet classically-grounded theory of natural law. His work offers a systematic philosophy of practical reasoning and moral choosing that addresses the great questions of the rational foundations of ethical judgments, the identification of moral norms, human agency, and the freedom of the will, personal identity, the common good, the role and functions of law, the meaning of justice, and the relationship of morality
and politics to religion and the life of faith. The core of Finnis' theory, articulated in his seminal work Natural Law and Natural Rights, has profoundly influenced later work in the philosophy of law and moral and political philosophy, while his contributions to the ethical debates surrounding
nuclear deterrence, abortion, euthanasia, sexual morality, and religious freedom have powerfully demonstrated the practical implications of his natural law theory.

This volume, which gathers eminent moral, legal, and political philosophers, and theologians to engage with John Finnis' work, offers the first sustained, critical study of Finnis' contribution across the range of disciplines in which rational and morally upright choosing is a central concern. It includes a substantial response from Finnis himself, in which he comments on each of their 27 essays and defends and develops his ideas and arguments.

Review

"Reason, Morality and Law reminds us of how far-ranging Finnis's intellectual endeavours have been, not just in legal, moral, political, literary, and theological disputes, but also in the less abstract contributions of work at the Bar and political advice to Parliament. There is great value to reading Finnis's views on the many subjects covered in this book, certainly for those whose sympathies on these issues are similar to Finnis's, but perhaps even more so for those of us who may be inclined to disagree sharply." - Brian H. Bix, University of Minnesota School of Law, MIND

The Last Myth: What the Rise of Apocalyptic Thinking Tells Us About America, by Matthew Barrett Gross, Mel Gilles

During the first dozen years of the twenty-first century, apocalyptic anticipation in America has leapt from the cultish to the mainstream. Today, nearly 60 percent of Americans believe that the events foretold in the book of Revelation will come true. But many secular readers also seem hungry for catastrophe and have propelled books about peak oil, global warming, and the end of civilization into bestsellers. How did we come to live in a culture obsessed by the belief that the end is near?

The Last Myth explains why apocalyptic beliefs are surging within the American mainstream today. Demonstrating that our expectation of the end of the world is a surprisingly recent development in human thought, the book reveals the profound influence of apocalyptic thinking on America’s past, present, and future.

Review
"The Last Myth is an important and moving analysis of the apocalyptic impulse that impels this culture toward its destructive ends, and an even more important and moving exploration of what we can and must do about it."--Derrick Jensen, author of Endgame

"If you want to know what's really happening in the reality-gap between our culture and our politics, and how we can refocus our efforts on real problems rather than just fears, The Last Myth lays it out in brilliant detail. A must-read book!" --Thom Hartmann, Bestselling author and international radio and TV show host

"The ability to distinguish between genuine perils-like climate change-and less fearsome ones is as key a skill as there can be at this tough moment, and this book has some truly interesting thoughts about how to do it."--Bill McKibben, author of Eaarth: Making a Life on a Tough New Planet

A Brilliant Worldview-Changer
By Z. Shaw
The Last Myth enriches and expands our understanding of the times we live in. It goes far beyond what we might expect of a book about the end of times. Through a fascinating historical narrative buoyed by strong empirical evidence, this exemplary work of nonfiction sets forth a case for transforming America's hegemonic and flawed concept of 'infinite progress' as we hurtle toward an unsustainable and collectively ugly resource-depleted future. In doing so, it becomes the panacea for the mindless mindfulness of the New Age. It makes sense of the teeming Rapture-ready herds champing at the armageddon bit. It defines, deconstructs and disposes of our modern secular culture of apocalyptic obsession. In short: it blows asteroids out of the sky.

In the end, The Last Myth may change the way you think about your place in the grand scheme of things. But perhaps more importantly, it will steel you for the times to come, and equip you for the times you are living in right now. Supervolcanoes, asteroids and pandemics are the laughably improbable bogeymen for a decline that's already taking place. Peak oil, economic collapse, global warming and income inequality factor high on the authors' TEOTWAWKI list for good reason. Unlike far-flung extinction level events that we can do very little about except grin and bear, the scientific community is lined up to support the authors' assertions. American collapse is simply the other side of the hard-fought bell curve that the baby boomers giddily bounced on top of when they got back from the war. Now far beyond driven into the red, the authors point to chunks of the American Dream as they crumble off, and warn us of the next pieces to fracture, only this time perhaps more violently. All the while, a pragmatic optimism persists, and the authors are strictly professional when it comes to the presentation of the facts.

You'd have to be living under a rock to not see the changes taking place, and yet this is the very argument put forward. Our rock is our cultural identity, which we cling desperately to during the onset of what feels like the end to us. Behind the magnetic pole shifts and solar flares, we are not only hiding from our own inevitable death -- we're coping with the tenuous nature of being alive. What is the value of one's life's work if there is no future for it (or in it)? Gross and Gilles smack the existentialism out of the reader's head to get to the facts: the time to do something is now. Not because the whole world is going to end, but because the illusion of infinite prosperity via technology is giving way to the reality of a finite natural world.

As I set the book down after voraciously tearing through to its humble but enthralling conclusion, I couldn't help but think of how future generations would regard mine. After reading The Last Myth, I think history will split us into three groups: those who started the fire, those who threw fuel on it, and those who knew well enough to stay far away from the spreading conflagration. Up until now, we Americans were free to belong to all three groups. But with every passing day, that's changing. The groups are getting more polarized. Eventually the fire will consume most of those dancing around it. History is written by the survivors.

Will Change How You Think
By Mark Sundeen
One of the rare books that changed the way I understand the world. I started thinking that end-timers had been around forever, but Gross and Gilles through meticulous research and dazzling persuasion show that this doomsday thinking is a product of Judeo-Christianity in general and post-Atom-bomb America in particular. Why does this matter? Because in a culture of Chicken Littles, we've come to ignore and mock the latest predicted catastrophe--be it Y2K or bird flu or the Mayan calendar--all the while standing paralyzed in the face of the climate crisis that is not a figment of our cultural imagination, but an unavoidable fact.

It might sound like a dense academic treatise but Gross and Gilles are not wonks but actual writers, and the prose is vivid, swift, and conversational. I read it in two long sittings. The books it reminded me of are Ecology of Fear by Mike Davis and What's the Matter with Kansas by Tom Frank, books that massage with wit while clobbering with information, giving that rare and delicious sensation of having your mind pried open and filled with new ideas.

A Must Read for Thinking, Feeling Human Beings
By Deborah L Hughes
I have had similar thoughts on our American fascination with cataclysmic thinking, akin to writer's block. The book concludes with the challenge to think outside our borders, beyond creating the world in our image and to take account of where we are, not in a paralytic requirement to demand What Is, but an open, creative inclusion of What If?
