Vaughn has teamed up with an old college buddy of Sam's to launch a new magazine, Woof!, which promises to inject a little National Enquirer-style gossip into the standard, dull dog-show reporting. The inaugural issue does indeed sully the reputation of one prominent handlerAand more nasty stories are in the pipelineAbut Sheila misses all the excitement because someone strangles her the night before the magazine is due to make its debut at a dog show. The murder not only stirs up the dog pack, it also throws an emotional monkey wrench into Melanie's love life, for she must face the fact that Sam still harbors deep feelings for Sheila. In the course of her sniffing about, Melanie meets a range of personalities on the dog-show circuit, from the breeders to the photographers, but it's the milieu that stands out rather than the scantily drawn characters. While Faith is happily awaiting her first litter, Melanie's main squeeze, hunky Sam Driver, is mooning over his ex-wife Sheila, who came east with her prize-winning Pugs for six months and stayed on to try to rock Sam's world-not to mention the high-class world of show dogs and their equally inbred owners. As co-publishers of Woof!, Sheila and her pre-Sam boyfriend Brian Endicott want to make a splash exposing shady breeders and sketchy owners. But just as their first issue's coming out, someone halts their press run by wrapping a leash around Sheila's pretty neck and leaving her dead on the floor of her rented North Salem cottage. Knowing that Sam won't be hers again until Sheila's murderer is caught, Melanie begins to sniff out the killer. The Best One Yet

I thought this Melanie Travis story was the best one yet. Berenson keeps getting better and better. It's hard to review this and not give away the things that are revealed in this edition--Sam's past, to be exact. There was less "dog show" in this book, but the detailed account of the birth of Faith's puppies was wonderful and satisfied the dog lover in me. You suspect that Melanie and Sam's relationship is coming to a climax, but I'll have to admit that the ending surprised me. I was prepared for a predictable ending. It was very touching and thoughtful--leaving me eager for the next in the series. Ms. Berenson, please don't wait too long.

It's a dog eat dog kinda world

Melanie Travis is back in another mystery. It's the dog days of summer, and our teacher/sleuth, Melanie, finds herself along with her beau, Sam, in the middle of a violent shake up among the dog breeders and showers created by the premiere of a new kind of dog magazine. If the first copy proves anything, it's that the underbelly of the dog show world isn't very pretty.
Sam's ex-wife, Shelia, a pug owner, has invited Melanie and Sam to dinner to announce her partnership in a new dog magazine called Woof! It's going to expose the dirt on the dog breeders and shows. Sam, being a breeder show-person himself has a problem with the magazine, and seeing Shelia back with their old friend Brian, who is owner of the new magazine and a Saint Bernard. While Sam is dealing with Shelia and Brian being back together, Melanie is dealing with Sam's feelings for his ex-wife, driving the soccer car pool for her son, and taking care of her pregnant standard poodle. It's a busy life for these characters and a busy mystery. The following Saturday is a show, and Sam's poodle puppy is showing. While at the show, they receive terrible news of a murder. Sam takes the murder pretty hard and flies off to Illinois to deal with the victim's family. While he is away, Melanie plays intrepid girl sleuth and rounds up a list of suspects for his return. Just when she thinks she figured it out, another murder takes place and leaves her scratching her head.
I have two pure breed dogs, but I know nothing about shows or breeding. And to prove it, I never registered our dogs, the Lhasa carries a poodle cut, and the miniature schnauzer has floppy ears. They were hand-me-downs from families who didn't want them. So, in reading this mystery, I've learned a lot from the drove of dog show information blended into the mystery. It was interesting without being distracting. The mystery itself was pretty good, and although I did have it solved right away, I still enjoyed reading the storyline and enjoyed watching the lead protagonist's personal life take on some changes. Speaking of the of the protagonist, the lead characters of Melanie, Sam, Aunt Peg, and Davy are likable; their relationships are realistic without being silly or over sweet. The sub-characters aren't left out of the action either. Each has an essential part in the mystery, whether it's to add more suspicion or to become a suspect. I sincerely think Laurien Berenson's fans will enjoy the undemanding epic called Unleashed in the Melanie series.
If you enjoy barking up this type of mystery tree, then you may also enjoy some similar canine mysteries by Susan Conant, Melissa Cleary, Carol Lea Benjamin, and Leslie O'Kane.

Never Disappointed by Laurien Berenson

I am always happy to rejoin Melanie Travers and see what happens next in her life as a mom, dog lover and amateur sleuth. In this adventure we see that Faith, Melanie's standard poodle, is taking time away from the show ring due to a damaged coat she sustained in the previous book Hush Puppy.

We learn more about Sam and his life before he met and fell in love with Melanie. Sam's ex-wife and his former best friend complicate matters for Sam and Melanie. Will this be the end of their relationship? The only way to find out is to buy Unleashed and see for yourself.

As the revelations about Jean multiply, sage readers probably won't be surprised to learn that they have been deeply drawn into yet another fantasy based on the legend of the Holy Grail. A I-don't-want-to-put-it-down-but-I-can-if-I-must novel

A wonderful novel full of mystery, romance, history, and fantasy. Parts of it reminded me of "The De Vinci Code" with its religious undertones and controversial questions about Christ and the Church. The characters were fully developed and very rich, although I would have like more depth to the so-called 'bad guy.' Its research was well done and paints a fascinating picture of France in the thirteenth century. Too often historical novels are too historical and leave the reader with the bitterness of there being no conclusion to life other then death and life's sufferings. Although this novel is not the happily-ever-after type (how could it be and still be historical?) it does not leave you at the end feeling hopeless and angry at the futility of life, rather it leaves you sort of mistily happy and inspired to do something, anything, with your life. I was very disappointed when I found out that Fiona Avery has not written any other novels. Hope this helps.

P.S. Good book for teenagers with a little bit of patience. Nothing in it that a thirteen year old couldn't read, although intellectually it would be over their head.

A rich fantasy with a plot woven around actual events

Take French medieval history, blend in a healthy dose of fantasy, and then trace the life of one Isabelle of France, born heir to the throne in 1240 and facing an unusual, changed destiny from a man who may be more than an ordinary mortal and you have The Crown Rose, a rich fantasy with a plot woven around actual events, blending elements of the real and fantasy. Over a year was spent researching the period - and it shows in a rich, detailed setting.

good characters and premise, disappointing writing style

Fiona Avery's The Crown Rose is a historical fantasy -- it places real historical figures in a real historical setting but it includes fantastic elements (magic, sorcery, etc.). In this novel, we follow the story of Princess Isabelle, Queen Mother Blanche, King Louis, Prince Robert, and Prince Charles in 13th century France. The royals are protected and advised by the Order of the Rose, a mysterious trio of women with supernatural powers and unknown origins.

Ms Avery's "good" characters are charming and her premise is interesting. The novel, which is full of biblical truths, displays of saintly behavior, and excellent distinctions between pharisaical and real righteous behavior, actually feels like a Christian fantasy (well, up until the very end when the Last-Temptation-of-Christ-style heresy is revealed).

But premise and characters can't make up for all of the problems I have with The Crown Rose. The biggest is the writing style. The simple, often choppy, informal sentences give it the feel of a children's novel, though its content is definitely adult. Ms Avery constantly tells me what characters are doing, will do, or how they feel. And she often tells me these things twice. She attempts to use a formal tone and courtly dialogue, but the writing is inelegant and too modern. If I'm supposed to feel like I'm back in the middle ages, then characters can't use words and phrases such as "really," "pretty much," "outside of," "automatically," and "try and." And a 13th century French archbishop can't take a 19th century British "lie-down." There is none of that "old feel" to the language (or the story) that we get from good historical writers like Sharon Kay Penman, Philippa Gregory, Dorothy Dunnett, or -- my favorite -- Patrick O'Brien.

A good editor could have fixed these problems and also could have avoided making me wince at sentences such as these:

* "You've been salivating over my hand in marriage since the time I was born!"
* "I try and avoid him."
* The whites of his eyes showed more power than the Devil's.
* They went at each other viciously: no armor, no elite fencing; just two men determined to live, determined that he would kill the other one.
* The problem was how apparent was what he and this cousin had been up to in the house.
* The young lieutenant looked up at him, shivering with collapse.
* "Fearful hounds and other beasts that prowl on the helpless."
* It was a massive understatement, she could tell.
* "I saw her come up to you just now, as I was making my way down. She never speaks to anyone outside of the queen."
* "I'm really the only one in the family who does pretty much the same thing as you do."

The writing style was enough to make me want to put down the novel, but wait! There's more. Some of the plot was ridiculous. Could it be possible that Isabelle, an educated, well-read, and intelligent princess, doesn't understand the political history between France and England and realize the reason her family wants her to marry the King of Germany (her best friend)? Nobody bothers to explain it to her and years later she is surprised to find out that marrying him might have been advantageous.

Is it possible that a sober Prince Robert -- a military strategist -- might tell family secrets to a tavern keeper he just met? Would an English spy give a French traitor information about England's planned invasion of France while he dandled a French whore on each knee? Would Thomas Aquinas refuse to tell Princess Isabelle and the university scholars about his secret studies, yet confide them to a courtier he just met? Does a medieval princess walk about Paris without an escort, ride alone on day-long journeys, and stay for days in a tower with a mysterious man she hardly knows without her mother and brothers being concerned?

Fiona Avery writes for television and comics, and I wonder if this explains the poor handling of her villains. Instead of being subtle and intriguing, they are comical. The bad guys have small eyes, stringy hair, hang out in brothels, smoke opium, and "slither." Her main villain, nobleman Pierre Mauclerc, has an irrational desire for Princess Isabella. She hates him, but he's under the delusion that she wants him, and every man she talks to is an enemy to be dispatched. He tries multiple methods for knocking them off and I started to wonder when he'd bring out the Acme anvil and a stick of dynamite.

Lastly, I was disappointed that I didn't get to read any of the "ripping philosophical discourse" between Isabelle and her university friends (Albertus Magnus, Roger Bacon, Thomas Aquinas). Avery often alludes to these great debates and discussions when actually including them would have given this novel some much-needed heft.

I can't recommend The Crown Rose as a YA novel because of the adult content. But, unfortunately, it will not satisfy adult readers of either fantasy or historical fiction.

This is an unexpected work. I have never read a so comprehensive book on the topic like this one. I am impressed that hundreds of cases and people are well-organized and related vividly. The author said that he aimed to construct a framework and system of parapsychology, he did. I strongly recommend the book. But the price is too high.

I really wanted to like this book

I really wanted to like this book. I think there's some good advice on assertiveness and the different kinds of adult bullying that go on at home and work. The overuse of bull iconography and puns was distracting for me. I found myself wincing and groaning, hoping to get through a page without another horri-bull pun. Others might find the writing style charming, But it detracted from the reading experience for me.

I would recommend this book. It provided basic insight to understanding the individual benefits of saying no in all possible life events. It reads quickly and simply, and could be easily suited for a diverse population. Easily understood.

A must-read for librarians and information professionals!

Priscilla Shontz, a past president of the American Library Association's New Members Round Table, shares information and gives useful advice on topics like choosing a field, cover letters and resumes, interviewing, networking, mentoring, and publishing.
Supplementing her own perspective are comments from over seventy information professionals. Many of them are experienced librarians, while others are newcomers to the field who share their wisdom about their own personal experiences getting started in the profession. These are perhaps the most enlightening of all: they talk about successes they've had, things they wish they'd done differently, and pitfalls that others can avoid. Their stories are funny, touching, wise, and always enlightening.
Written in a clear, concise, and engaging style, this book fills a big gap in the literature. And it's not just appropriate to those in the early stages of their career -- it would be equally useful to old pros who are looking to re-energize their careers (or those who are mentoring newcomers).
A pleasure! This book should be required reading for all library school students and faculty members -- it's certainly more useful and entertaining (as well as more of a bargain!) than most of the textbooks out there.

Although very informational with a mass of websites, organizations, first-hand interviews and books to use as references I found some of the vital points repetitive. It's a great book that could have used a couple more re-writes. Having said that, if I had to do it again I would still buy the book.

Greatest series of books ever!!!

Apart from the God-authored Holy Bible, the MacArthur New Testament Commentary is the greatest series of books in the history of the written word!

Dr. John MacArthur has been pastor of Grace Community Church in Los Angeles since 1969. During that time, he has preached verse-by-verse through the entire New Testament. The commentary chapter divisions are (essentially) derived from those individual sermons.

The essence of John MacArthur's credibility is his unswerving devotion to the Divine inspiration (authorship), absolute inerrancy, and complete authority of the Bible. Since the Bible is the true and infallible written revelation of God to mankind, Dr. MacArthur has said: "The only logical response to inerrant Scripture is to preach it expositionally. By that, I mean preaching in such a way that the meaning of the Bible passage is presented entirely and exactly as it was intended by God." This commitment results in content that is consistently and faithfully evangelical, because, as he explains: "Over the years of teaching the word of God without a lot of presuppositions, I tend to conclude whatever I believe the exegetical process yields."

But, although MacArthur has successfully disentangled himself from the straightjacket of agenda-driven or tradition-mandated, outcome-based theology--paying no tribute to conformity with any human opinion--he is by no means a doctrinal libertine. He is manifestly committed to declaring "the whole purpose of God" (Acts 20:27), and yet equally determined "not to exceed what is written" (2 Corinthians 4:6). This honest, forthright handling of Scripture renders MacArthur's work refreshingly free of the distortions and outright oppositions of the ear-tickling theology demanded by fallen human preference--which is so often shamelessly catered to and pandered to by the Lord's foes and friends alike!

In these commentaries (and, indeed, in any of MacArthur's books and sermons), the subject matter of Holy Scripture is always presented with credence as trustworthy, dynamic, living truth that has urgent and immediate application for every reader--as you would expect of words written by Almighty God Himself.. And MacArthur is a master at explaining the Bible with the Bible by comparing parallel passages, citing cross references with similar details, doctrines, or concepts, and appealing to Scriptural examples as the best demonstration of Scriptural principles. As a result, his sermons and commentaries have broad appeal and relevance in any and every society or time period. In addition to the trustworthy doctrinal content, MacArthur's commentaries are rich with fascinating historical and cultural details that bridge the gap of millennia and bring the reader closer to the events, people, and settings of the Bible. Many informative linguistic insights are also provided which further enhance the understanding of words and passages. Extensive quotations from various authors on related subjects and issues add a stimulating variety of perspective, which is accessible in the commentary chapters where they appear and in the bibliographies at the end of each volume.

The format of the commentary series is designed for maximum convenience, with helpful features for quick reference and more in-depth study. In every volume and every chapter, the message of the Word of God is presented with clarity and concision that will readily appeal to the most serious Bible student, and yet the content is not overly technical so as to be too laborious for a layman.

Most importantly, the rich information and detail that is presented about God and His truth is always accompanied by a convicting call to practical application in sincere obedience, as the Lord Jesus said: "If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them" (John 13:17). This governing principle for the commentary project is given by Dr. MacArthur in the series Preface, which appears at the outset of every volume: "My prayer is that each reader will fully understand what the Holy Spirit is saying through this part of His word, so that His revelation may lodge in the minds of believers and bring greater obedience and faithfulness--to the glory of our great God."

ALL of John MacArthur's books are similarly valuable for their forthright, straightforward, faithful proclamation of the truth of God and the one true gospel of salvation by grace alone through faith alone in Jesus Christ alone (apart from any false considerations of human merit)--which is mankind's only hope of escaping God's righteous judgment against the sin we are all guilty of committing against Him. Some of my personal favorites, in addition to these commentaries, are--the MacArthur Study Bible (the greatest single-volume book in the history of the written word), One Perfect Life, The Gospel According to Jesus, Ashamed of the Gospel, The Love of God, and the Battle for the Beginning (among many others).

This set is worth having

Actually I am not rating this specific commentary, but rather the set. I believe I have all of the published volumes of this series. I believe Mark still remains to be published. Over all I like MacArthur's Commentaries, although I do not always agree with them. MacArthur does do a good job of giving references that are helpful. I wish this set was available in computer software.

It considers the international legal framework governing FDI, discussing the nature and extent of the bilateral and regional investment treaty commitments
undertaken by each of the BRIC states, including their commitments under the WTO General Agreement on Trade in Services, as well as their obligations as members of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

Drawing on trends observed in the regulatory approach of these countries to FDI in services, including the observed flow of FDI both to and now from the developing world, the book proposes a multilateral investment treaty aimed at the liberalization and protection of FDI in services. The treaty will capture the emerging equilibrium in global FDI patterns signifying a unified approach to the regulation of foreign investment in the growing services economy by developing and developed economies
alike. The treaty will strengthen the legitimacy of investor-state dispute settlement and recognize public interest norms such as environmental protection and human rights as well as allow signatories to retain sovereignty over matters relating to national security and economic stability.

About the Author

David Collins is a Senior Lecturer at the City Law School of City University where he teaches and researches in the field of international economic law, specializing in the law of the World Trade Organization and international investment law. He is a Fellow of the Institute for Globalisation and International Regulation at Maastricht University, a frequent Visiting Professor at ESADE Law School and a Current Development Editor for the Manchester Journal of International Economic Law. David has been a Visiting Fellow at the Institute of International Economic Law of Georgetown University, the World Trade Institute of the University of Bern, the University of Sydney Law School, the Asian Institute of International Financial Law at the University of Hong Kong, and Columbia Law School. His research has attracted funding from the British Academy, the Society of Legal Scholars, and the Foundation for Canadian Studies in the UK.
