He focuses primarily on conflict between Western powers, including Japanese participation in the Russo-Japanese War. Trends and developments subsequent to 1945 have combined, Black asserts, to make a return to total war unlikely.

Astrology with an academic and historical, Jewish perspectiv

I bought this book years ago and it remains one of my most treasured. The Introduction reads "The Practice of Judaism and The Science of Astrology" with quotes of Jewish law, Nadmanides, Rabbi Solomon Luria's commentary on Maimonides, the Zohar - and this is just the first few paragraphs! The table of contents includes each sign, i.e. Aries/Nissan, Taurus/Iyar, etc. Each page is chock full of quotes, anecdotes. I feel 'justified' as a Jew who also is an astrologer. You'll never want to let this book out of your library and I feel that you'll always be glad that you own it.

Seemingly without exception, Western agnostics and atheists equate astronomical symbolism knowingly employed by ancient mystical writers as some evidence of religion being "bogus" and religious figures being "literary hoaxes". But such is not the case. The plain fact is our worldview has changed. We moderns are conditioned to "scientifically" view our Cosmos actually as chaos - random agglomerations of disparate and unrelated facts. This is our worldview. Unless we step back and examine our a priori premises, any appreciation of our true place in a Cosmos that IS "cosmos" (beautifully well ordered) must of necessity elude us. Moreover, the votes are not all in whether we've got it right. Further, every good scientist (Feynman, Schrodinger, Heisenberg, Einstein, et alia) knows science *by definition* can make no meaningful refutation of the varieties of religious experience. Science and religion exist on two different planes of reality and human experience.

The Hebrews prove to be canny and deep in this area, having devoted thousands of years of careful study to their religious symbolism and epistemology. The Hebrew and Roman Catholic traditions view the incorporation of astronomical symbolism as both valid and necessary. To those with a mystical appreciation of the Cosmos and our place in it - as to the logical and well-ordered religious Hebrew mind - God doesn't create "random disparate facts". As Einstein devoutly opined, "God doesn't play dice". The Cosmos *is* a cosmos: There is order everywhere. Including the heavens. See also God's Voice in the Stars: Zodiac Signs and Bible Truth.

Above the Zodiac: Astrology in Jewish Thought is a valuable resource for understanding the validity of astronomical symbolism in the Western religious tradition. Like Mazzaroth by Frances Rolleston, which makes clear the incorporation or at least presence of astronomical symbolism in the synoptic gospels, author Rabbi Glazerson provides an excellent discourse of twelve chapters (each devoted to one constellation) on astronomical symbolism in the Old Testament and Kabbalistic philosophy: "Within Jewish literature, the source for the spiritual meaning of the astrological constellations is the Sefer Yetzirah ... whose authorship tradition attributes to the patriarch Abraham" (page ix). There is, however, at least in my copy, an editorial lapse from page 105 through page 107, in which material that belonged in the Tammuz chapter was erroneously placed in the Aquarius [Shevat] chapter. High praises for an (otherwise) extremely clear presentation.

Controversial but interesting

There is no rabbinical approbation on such a book (which is necessary in this field). The author does quote numerous rabbinical sources (however accurate they maybe is open to interpretation) - mainly the Ariz"al and the Zohar, as well as Rabbeinu Bachaya, Ramban and Ibn Ezra. I thought the historical map at the end was a nice summary of the book, but was not produced by the author. It was certainly an interesting find, the English translations and discussion should however be researched before any conclusions should be drawn from such a work.

There's Nothing to Stop You Now!

Barbara Abercrombie describes her book of writing exercises as "warm-ups and side doors into stories, ways to kick down the walls and surprise yourself with where your writing can go."

Abercrombie, a writing instructor, offers five-minute exercises and has seen novels, memoirs and many essays get started that way. From reading and enjoying her book, I can definitely see how.

There are 365 prompts which offer a myriad ways to get started or continue a project. Each page begins with an inspirational quote from a well-known writer, such as Madeleine L'Engle, Barbara Kingsolver or Mary Oliver. The quotes lead to the prompts. Joy Harjo's line from one of her poems, "The world begins at a kitchen table," leads to suggestions related to the kitchen—such rich territory for family stories.

Following a quote from Haruki Murakami, Abercrombie suggests writing about an activity you love and wonders: "Could a memoir be based on this activity? An essay?"

If you're writing fiction, Abercrombie proposes giving the "you" in the prompt to one of your characters.

Specifically for fictional characters yet related to your own life is this prompt: "Write about the part of yourself you can hand over to fictional characters. Is it your flaws, your fears? Your knowledge about something specific in the world? Your values?"

I was energized by this book, which is now full of notations and flags. I have many prompts to go back to. The excerpts had me looking further to find the book or the poem because I was enticed by a few quoted lines of it. Further reading is always a good practice for a writer.

I found it fascinating to see the thread of inspiration from the quotes that resonated with Abercrombie, the writing prompts that followed, and the way the prompts inspire the reader. I got ideas for poems, for personal essays, for a novel I'm working on and for writing circles I lead. Even writing this review, I'm feeling invigorated by inspiration and support from a tribe of writers' voices for what I'm doing and plan to do—even for what I didn't plan to do.

Here's an excerpt from William Carlos Williams that is inspiring for the writing life: "Their story, yours, mine—it's what we all carry with us on this trip we take, and we owe it to each other to respect our stories and learn from them."

The results of in-class, five-minute exercises from sixteen of Abercrombie's students are also included in the last section of the book. No matter what your writing stage, newbie or long time writer, you'll find an invitation to plunge right in.

About the Author
Cartoonist Lincoln Peirce was born in Ames, Iowa, but grew up in Durham, New Hampshire. As a kid, he began creating his own strips in the sixth grade, just like his beloved character Nate Wright. Peirce taught high school in New York City and has created several animated pilots for the Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon. He lives in Portland, Maine, with his family.

Fun little book. Has a few bad messages.

I am a young teen who recently read this book and loved it! I read it over and over again as it never gets old. I also colored in the pictures. Although this book is pretty fun there is some not necessarily violent but some slightly mean humor. It has a slight bad message on account that the main character is a school drop-out and a rebel. He is always getting in trouble and detention. This book is pretty good but can never top the funny diary of a wimpy kid series. Even most diary of a wimpy kid books are more innocent then big Nate. Personally I don't think this book can cause any damage to young minds but note that I have seen books with much more intelligent humor with a better message.

Big Nate is Tops with my son

I keep on the lookout for books to feed to my ten year old son, who I am attempting to instill a self-motivated drive for reading. I have witnessed him reading this book (and the other Big Nate books) on his own. He recently started reading aloud to me from Big Nate books as bedtime reading (it used to be just me reading to him). Anyway, the content seems funny enough for my preteen boy that he reads on his own, and that works for me.

My 8 year old has read and loved the Diary of a Whimpy Kid books and the Captain Underpants books. He was thrilled when I got him the Big Nate books. He's read them all and can't wait for the next one!

Driving the narrative is the leader's ultimate fate: Wingina is decapitated by one of Ralegh's men in the summer of 1586.

When the story of Roanoke is recast in an effort to understand how and why an Algonquian weroance was murdered, and with what consequences, we arrive at a more nuanced and sophisticated understanding of what happened during this, the dawn of English settlement in America.

Consequences of Killing one Indian

Professor Oberg has written an excellent book on the death of Wingina by one of the early English explorers to Roanoke and the long-range impact of that murder. The material is well-researched and presented, with few things to find fault in this edition. There is no bibliography and the author's "Acknowledgements" section is more suitable as a "Preface" to the whole book. Some proper names are confused in the text, i.e., Sir Walter Raleigh or Ralegh are interchanged; as is the Algonquin Indian taken to England, who is re-named Ralegh or Raleigh. The Index is incomplete; it lacks many names of individuals listed in the narrative. The author includes too many summaries throughout, and some of the Indian weroance leaders are introduced so early and briefly in the text, that when they are mentioned a few hundred pages later, the reader is left without continuity.

Nevertheless, Professor Oberg's story of Edward Nugent's murder of King Wingina is well told, but it gets lost in the last chapter with his digression into the many theories of the Lost Colony of Roanoke Island. He dismisses out-of-hand the so-called "Dare Stones," and gives a left-handed compliment to the Paul Green outdoor drama, "The Lost Colony."

But, those things aside, the book fills a large gap in most Early American history texts, by giving the reader a full discussion of the Indians (especially the key role played by Manteo) and a key event, the murder of King Wingina, which affected Indian-English relations for generations to come.

The "New World" from an Algonquian worldview

I read this for my North Carolina Indians class. While I haven't actually taken the class yet, I'm looking forward to it because of this and the other texts the professor assigned. The author's attempt to recreate an Algonquian's point of view of the first true English attempts at settlement around Roanoke Island in the 1580s seems to prove successful. His analysis of the Algonquian gods Ahone and Kiwasa, the Indians attempts to please Kiwasa with Montoac, and subsequent attempts to integrate English Christianity into this system was especially fascinating and illuminating. Of course, due to the scarcity of documents from the period, much of the book is based on speculation and relating the Roanoke Indian's practices to neighboring ones such as the Powhatans. Despite this hurdle, the book is very interesting and makes logical sense, at least from my perspective as a student.

Excellent Interpretation

This book focuses on the viewpoint of the Algonquian natives of coastal North Carolina in the 1580s as they attempt to adapt their lives to the rapid change brought upon them by English settlement on Roanoke Island. Drought, disease, and, eventually, violent attack by the settlement's paranoid soldiers destroy their system of subsistance survival and harmony with nature and a spiritual world. Other books about the Roanoke settlements are written from the Englishmen's point of view. Oberg's book, cleanly and intelligently narrated, is unique in its perspective. Oberg's thoughtful conjectures are based upon extensive research. 5 stars for the reader who needs to understand fully specific historical events.
