Preface

This volume is not a typical anthropology book about Iraq. The essays have been written in the midst of the Iraq War and lack, therefore, the hindsight that often benefits scholarly analyses. Moreover, the contributing authors did not conduct the long-term fieldwork that customarily underlies anthropological studies. The physical danger to foreign civilians in Iraq has been so great that even experienced war correspondents have for years been able to leave Baghdad's Green Zone only on day trips surrounded by private security contractors or embedded in military units. This book shows, however, that the impossibility of conducting ethnographic fieldwork in war zones such as Iraq does not preempt anthropological interpretation.

This book arose from three pressing concerns in mid-2005: a moral outrage against the Iraq War, the absence of an anthropological voice in professional and public debates, and the similarities with previous armed conflicts worldwide (Robben 2005). The anger and dismay over the steeply rising number of dead as the Iraq War dragged on, the urbicide of Fallujah, the displacement of millions of citizens, the gruesome beheading of kidnap victims, the lethal roadside bombs, the mistreatment of Iraqi civilians—with the humiliation of inmates at Abu Ghraib prison as the first public jolt that there was something profoundly wrong with the war—and the terrible waste of resources in the mismanaged reconstruction of Iraq's infrastructure have been felt by many people, not just anthropologists. Numerous anthropologists voiced their opinions at home, among friends and colleagues, and maybe in the classroom, but few brought their anthropological knowledge to bear on the issues discussed in the public domain. Some anthropologists with expertise in the Middle East wrote op-eds about the ethnocentrism of foreign troops fighting in Iraq and pointed out the blindness of our political leaders to Iraq's turbulent political history and ethnic-religious complexities, but these were lone voices among the political scientists, military historians, foreign affairs specialists, and opinion makers that dominated the media. The absence of an anthropological perspective was all the more surprising because anthropologists have since the 1980s been studying armed conflicts that have many similarities with the Iraq War.

These concerns resulted in the formation of the Iraq Research Project in early 2006, in which a group of anthropologists, seasoned in the ethnographic study of violence, suffering, and armed conflict, were invited to write about the Iraq War. Since then, the American Anthropological Association has examined the involvement of anthropologists in the U.S. military and has been reviewing its code of ethics (AAA Commission 2007). Furthermore, many anthropologists have pledged themselves to the opposition against research and service for the military initiated in 2007 by the Network of Concerned Anthropologists (Members 2007). Anthropological research about the Iraq War has concentrated mainly on the study of U.S. veterans and especially on the ethically questionable employment of anthropologists by the military. This book focuses on the plight of the Iraqi people in this devastating war, waged under the banner of freedom and democracy, through comparisons between Iraq and past and present armed conflicts in Cambodia, Israel, Palestine, Northern Ireland, Afghanistan, and Argentina. The introductory chapter conceptualizes the methodological approach to the study of inaccessible war zones and discusses the importance of comparative anthropology in interpreting the fragmentary, conflicting, and partisan information emerging from those fronts. The five ethnographic chapters analyze, respectively, the Manichaean discourse of the war on terror, the deterioration of women's rights in Iraq, the ethnic-religious partitioning of Baghdad, the loss of popular support for the U.S. and Coalition forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the counterinsurgency warfare in Iraq. The volume closes with an epilogue that discusses the anthropological findings from a historical perspective.

I've read a lot of books about leadership, implementation and productivity. The New Rules of Management trumps them all. Although I loved reading the four hour work week, getting things done and putting first things first.... The New Rules of Management was able to give me a framework that I can apply to myself, my business and my clients. I loved it how Peter Cook suggests that it's our biology that gets in the way of us following through on our intentions and he gives us practical ways to overcome our human limitations. I also love the project methodology and the idea that the mark of a successful quarter, year or decade will be reflected in how many worthwhile projects we implement.

The New RULES of MANAGEMENT - is BRILLIANT!

Cause I'm into achievement and fulfilment and cause I know and respect that Peter Cook continually lives this by implementing projects that matter - his new book THE NEW RULES OF MANAGEMENT was definitely my essential holiday reading last week:) Peters 4 key elements are stuck in my brain and I am already applying them to EVERY project in my life.
One is SUPPORT. He says "You want people who " have your back" supporting your project...They fill in the pieces as you forge ahead and support you from behind. They believe in you and they back you. Equally you want people who "have your front" supporting you. You want scouts infront determining what the terrain looks like. Do you have supporters who have your front? People who have been there and done that, and can show you the way? Do you have people announcing you, letting the world know you are coming?" Yes support is essential for sure.
Love what he also says successful people have in common: "It isn't great products, charismatic leadership, intelligence, resources, or any of the things we normally associate with success. The one critical element to success is the intent, willingness and ability to implement projects that matter....there is an implementation imperative for every one of us. We each have a limited window, and if we want to be successful and leave a legacy, we need to implement much, much more. We need to shift our focus to creating and executing the projects that matter, in our lives as well as at work." Peter has proven this time and time again in his Thought Leader practice and he has become one of the few role models I carefully listen to.
And I love this "So, if more free time, more stuff and more money don't provide fulfilment, what does? Science tells us that the answer is purpose, progress and autonomy. Of course, these all come from implementing projects that matter."

A brilliant book congrats Peter Cook and THANK YOU for writing it!

A must read if you make new years resolutions

What I loved most about this book is how you can implement projects that matter on a personal level. In the book Peter Cook not only shows you why implementing projects that matter helps you lead a fulfilling life but shows you how to do it. This is a must read for anyone who sets new years resolutions or challenges for themselves. I highly recommend it for both your personal and professional projects.

While Ondaatje's investigation uncovers the themes and issues that link these voices together, he debunks the myth of a monolithic black conservatism. Figures such as Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, the Hoover Institution's Thomas Sowell and Shelby Steele, and cultural theorist John McWhorter emerge as individuals with their own distinct understandings of and relationships to the conservative political tradition.

Illuminates. An excellent read.

This collection of well-curated essays is both accessible and thought-provoking, inspiring and practical. As someone in the industry, I appreciated that Creating Good Work deepens the conversation from 'admiring the problem' or celebrating unexamined solutions, to instead organizing and sharing real lessons learned from expert practitioners.

To share a few favorites, I found Greg Dunn's article on Deliberate Disruptive Design helpful to frame the dynamic work of engaging heart and mind. Paul Herman's chapter showed a pathway for pragmatic investors to use rigorous metrics to highlight "the invisible threads of values". The chapters are brief, so expect to look up entrepreneurs and organizations to learn more. Dorothy Stoneman shared principles and advice that might appeal to both aspiring and seasoned social entrepreneurs, including to 'manage your disappointment in the gap between vision and reality you created'. Rebecca Onie from Health Leads and Karen Tse from International Bridge to Justice, also articulately take us from the genesis of their ideas to genuine reflection on personal and organizational challenges and opportunities for systemic change.

An Original Work of Significance

THE JAPANESE ADMINISTRATION OF GUAM: 1941-1944, by Wakako Higuchi
This book is not for your typical World War II buff, looking for an adrenalin rush, nor is it for those looking for a vicarious combat experience without actually being shot at. However, if you are a serious military historian and researcher, then you will want to read this book. It is not about the invasion and occupation of Guam, but more about the Japanese Navy Ministry's attempt to administer the island. Also, unlike most recent books published about World War II, this one is not a rehash of earlier works. It is well-researched and thoughtfully presented. It gives researcher and serious Pacific War historians insights into Japanese thinking that led to the eventual war with the United States and her allies, and Imperial Japan's efforts to reorder Asia and the Pacific free of Western colonialism. The author also shows how Japanese theory and practice failed to accomplish what it had set out to do. Obviously, we will never know if it could have succeeded had Japan won the war.
The Appendices makes up roughly have of this book. However, I have to say the translated letters and documents as well as the translated oral histories found therein make for additional interesting and thought-provoking reading.

In Owning William Shakespeare James Marino explores the actors' system of intellectual property as something fundamentally different from the property regimes exercised by the London printers or the royal monopolists. Focusing on Hamlet, The Taming of the Shrew, King Lear, and other works, he demonstrates how Shakespeare's acting company asserted ownership of its plays through intense rewriting combined with progressively insistent attribution to Shakespeare. The familiar versions of these plays were created through ongoing revision in the theater, a process that did not necessarily begin with Shakespeare's original manuscript or end when he died. An ascription by the company of any play to "Shakespeare" did not imply that it was following a fixed, authorial text; rather, Marino writes, it indicates an attempt to maintain exclusive control over a set of open-ended, theatrically revised scripts.

Combining theater history, textual studies, and literary theory, Owning William Shakespeare rethinks both the way Shakespeare's plays were created and the way they came to be known as his. It overturns a century of scholarship aimed at re-creating the playwright's lost manuscripts, focusing instead on the way the plays continued to live and grow onstage.

Brilliant, insightful and ready for more attention.

The introduction of this book is worth the full price by itself, but this extended argument about the way Shakespeare's plays were written (through a constant process of theatrical revision, during and even after his lifetime) untangles so many knotty problems that it is a must-read for scholars. It advances an argument about the way that Early Modern culture looked at ownership of plays which is stunningly different from modern ideas about authorial rights. By looking at particularly problematic texts, the author patiently explains how so many textual puzzles came to surround Shakespeare's early texts.

SARAH CUNNINGHAM is an idea junkie who blogs about extraordinary friendships in a sometimes too ordinary world. She and her husband, Chuck, live in southern Michigan, where they serve as chief servants to the Emperor Justus, her 3 year old son and his newly-appointed chief of staff, the 5-month old, Malachi. She has authored three other books, does freelance event and communications work and attends a Wesleyan church plant that meets at her city's YMCA.

The Best Leadership-ish book I have ever read!

Do we really need another book about leadership? Admittedly, this was my first thought when I heard about Sarah Cunninghams new book The Well Balanced World Changer. But after sitting down and talking with Sarah and taking time to read through much of this book, I can honestly say that this may be one of the most valuable resources that I have ever come across for young adults who are passionate about changing the world. Most leadership books are written for businessmen, politicians, and pastors, but Sarah Cunninghams new book is really written from the perspective of a young adult who has a simple desire to work for the good of the world- which describes many of us the Millennial generation who are activistic and driven to make a difference in our communities, culture, and world.

The book is divided into ten sections addressing issues from Worth & Success to Desires & Frustrations, each section with a dozen of short yet wisdom packed peices of advice ranging from 2-6 pages (which again, is perfect for millennials who suffer from attention span deficit! lol) Sarah pulls wisdom from her own life and the lives of influential people in different contexts from around the world to help cause the reader to reach out and take a leap to change the world in whatever way God is stirring in their spirit. While this book is distinctly Christian (a number of references to Scripture, Christian leaders, and Jesus) it is not per-say a "Christian book". What I mean is that Sarah writes in such a way that literally anyone who were to sit down and meditate on the principles of this book can have their lives enriched and find new inspiration to press on to be a "well-balanced world changer".

I really can't admonish you more to pick up this book- this book really can help your life find balance as you press onward towards whatever goals or causes that you are passionate about. The chapters are concise, the principles are profound, and the applications are practical. Why not pick up a copy to add to your day to day mediation/devotion routine? You really won't be disappointed. With all of that said,

Sarah's perspective on life is a breath of fresh air. She doesn't have to "try." Rather, she simply is. Blending metaphors from ancient Scripture and modern media, Sarah's depth is evident. Don't expect entertainment. Instead, prepare yourself for an extended look in the mirror. Sarah's words will evoke a response, and probably one you've been longing to communicate for quite some time. Get ready to know yourself in a whole new way. You never know, you might just change the world, while you're at it.

Sarah Cunningham presents a great book, filled with essays on how to change the world. She turn almost every stone, when it comes to the topic of how to interpret our everyday life. There is always a positive way out. She uses numerous of examples from the Bible, and shows how relevant they are today.

I see the world with new eyes, thanks to this book.
