In the disturbing title story (also included in Best American Short Stories 1991 ), a child witnesses the division of her family after her father returns, psychologically ruined, from a war. The particularly wrenching "By the Light of Friendship" shows a lonely man nervously awaiting his 14-year-old daughter at the bus station, only to be told she has decided not to visit him. In "The Shadders Go Away," a mother taking her young sons on vacation feels overwhelmed by their unresponsiveness even as she acts jovial and hopeful. Reading McCafferty's collection, one feels empathy for characters trapped by circumstance and inertia; rather than disdain them, we share the poignancy of their experiences.

Most of the stories are told from the viewpoint of a little girl whose single mother is revealed to be eccentric and perhaps certifiably disconnected. Throughout, Pop 40 songs define each woman's apparent emotional range. Men aren't so much blamed as portrayed as ill formed and ineffectual. Thus, in the title story, Zenia's father returns from an unnamed war with a ring of 52 keys and a cry in his voice. In "Thirst," Doris likens her daughter to something "they had picked up one day like groceries." "While Mother Was Gone with 571" (the digits being the license tag of her newest beau), the narrator and a friend conspire to hail a series of taxis to reach the home of a reclusive, hysterical neighbor. In the best story, "An Evocation," the death of a childhood friend stirs memories of the Fifties that are alternately funny, bittersweet, and ugly. Recommended for most collections.

Madness, desertion, lost children, lost husbands and lovers, the fear and threat of abandonment, women holding on to self and reality just barely, landscapes constructed of what people dream and think and wish and avoid, the rich substance of inner lives explored in language memorable and quotable, with a life and integrity of its own.

Transporting

I pulled this off my shelf to dig up a passage that I wanted to e-mail to a friend, and ended up rereading the whole thing. Within a page each story transports me to a place, floating unseen right next to the main character, not reading a story but witnessing a piece out of some people's lives. Some of my favorite stories here play variations on the theme of one of life's most dizzying universals: the times when someone who you thought was going to be walking beside you the rest of your life goes away, and even if you might eventually see them again it'll never be the same between you. Kids watch parents disappear into mental breakdown. A divorced mom packs her kids up for an impromptu road trip to try (for a little while)to outrun the fact that dad is off somewhere making a new life with somebody else. An alcoholic, estranged dad witnesses one night in the long friendship of two women as he digests the knowledge that his young daughter isn't ready to come see him just yet. Two inseparable adolescent girls' friendship vaporizes in an all-too-common way. McCafferty's compassion is palpable, her eye for detail unerring. And I'd be saying all this even if I'd never met and spent time with the author over a very happy summer nearly 20 years ago. Publication couldn't happen to a nicer person...

Consistently Terrific

I met Jane McCafferty a few months back, and she seemed like a real decent person, so I figured I'd give her writing a shot. I am so glad I did. In story after story, McCafferty beautifully captures the sadness and loss that haunts so many of us, and our attempts to wear a brave face, to keep the darkness at bay. She uses plainspoken language and populates her tales with recognizable characters, details, and emotions, with a car radio often supplying the soundtrack. I was totally impressed, and can't wait to read more of her work.

"Not only tools of deception and illusion," says historian Kathy Peiss of our culture's powders and pastes, "these little jars tell a rich history of women's ambition, pleasure, and community."

The early entrepreneurs in the beauty business were often women, most of them as skilled at reinventing themselves as at making over their customers. Elizabeth Arden came from a poor Canadian family but remade her image into one of "upper-crust Protestant femininity" in order to sell her products. Madame Walker, one of the many African American women who were able to find careers in the beauty industry, rose from laundry lady to head of a small cosmetic empire. Indeed, Peiss finds, the beauty industry was one of the first to bring a substantial number of women a decent income.

For American consumers, the marketing of makeup has long stirred issues of race, class, and morality. Peiss addresses in particular how makeup has long been marketed in ways that assert the superiority of "white" features and skin over that of other races, and how African-Americans and other minorities in the cosmetic industry have dealt with this issue.

In this lively social history of America's beauty culture, freelance writer Peiss traces the background and growth of the billion-dollar U.S. cosmetics industry over the past century. Relating cultural changes at the end of the 19th century, she observes that using makeup, heretofore forbidden for "nice" women, became a lightning rod for larger conflicts over female autonomy and social roles. The burgeoning industry provided opportunity for entrepreneurial women who eventually played a key role in its development. Among the early titans were Elizabeth Arden, a Canadian immigrant who learned to speak with proper diction to project an upper-class image, and Polish-born Helena Rubenstein, another powerful, self-created woman. They also had their counterparts in the black community: Annie Turnbo Malone and Madame C.J. Walker, who developed hair-care products, recruited women as agents as they traveled the country; Malone rewarded them with cash, diamond rings and even low-interest mortgages, a forerunner of today's direct-sales incentive programs. According to a study in the late 1980s, quoted here, feminist politics of recent years have done little to diminish women's use of makeup. This is a delicious and serious look at a glamorous industry. Illustrations of cosmetics advertising offer a history of their own.

YA-A fascinating look at the history of cosmetics in America. The author traces public opinion and practices regarding the use of makeup from colonial days when only fallen women "painted" to modern standards that almost require women to use some sort of commercial enhancement to succeed socially and professionally. Like Joan Jacobs Brumberg's The Body Project: An Intimate History of American Girls (Random, 1997), this book illuminates society's former requirement that feminine beauty be judged by inner qualities and outward purity, as opposed to current standards based primarily on physical attractiveness. Early advertisements for products with outrageous claims and deadly ingredients are presented along with recipes for cosmetics that were traditionally made in the kitchen, while later advertisements include a World War II-era lipstick promotion that claimed it was women's patriotic duty to preserve femininity through the use of makeup during wartime. The varied attempts to market cosmetics to men are also examined, as are the opportunities the beauty industry afforded entrepreneurial women who were not traditionally welcomed in the business world. A thought-provoking and informative book.

I'm glad I read this book.

The author asks the question "Why are many women so interested in makeup?" and tries to answer it, while also telling you a history of the cosmetics industry. (It goes back further than I thought.) I don't think she fully answers the question, but the information and ideas she gives are thought-provoking. Maybe the point is that we're each supposed to come up with our own answers. I've been thinking about mine since reading this book two months ago.
What's really cool to me is that the author doesn't think there's necessarily anything evil or anti-feminist about enjoying cosmetics. She doesn't try to say that women who buy makeup have given into their oppression. I've always loved makeup, yet considered myself an independent, modern person, and I don't think these ideas conflict.
This is not a political book. It's more sociological. The author shows her fascination with this subject without passing judgement on anyone involved (although some of the industry people were ruthless and shady, and she lets you see that without hitting you over the head with it).

HOW TO WRITE cultural history. period.

Kathy Peiss' work is always exhaustively researched and engagingly written, with clear arguments and structures. In this, it already stands head and shoulders above the bulk of cultural history written. In addition, this book, *as a straight history text* is also interesting and accessible to the lay reader. Some might argue that Peiss gives too much credence to the community-building possibilities of makeup culture, but I believe this is not the case. Rather, Peiss is taking on a time-honored and by now orthodox view of the history of women. You know the drill: women are victims; women inhabit a world made by men; women have had no pure means by which to just _be women_. To put it crudely.
Peiss' history on the other hand focuses on this industry, makeup, which has been decried by many as a tool of patriarchy, and shows that in fact women made the world of makeup, even if they may have done so for the sake of looking better for men (and that's not the whole story either.) EVEN IF the community of fashion doesn't have the historical pedigree of the WWW or UAW, ILGWU, etcetera, it may well be because Labor was a self-consciously political movement, with a bent for public promotion. Makeup, by these standards, is just makeup.
Give the historians a break. They (we) can't exist in some ideologicial vacuum. Peiss' work does a service for the discipline of history in that her ideological stance is healthily skeptical of many (though by no means all) orthodoxies, and her careful writing and exhaustive research are great examples of how to write good history about heretofore ignored subjects.
Bottom line, folks. Peiss is never a surprising read, because her research and writing make each point seem glaringly obvious. But the strength of her observations and the clarity of her argument make this a solid piece of work indeed.

So Much More Than Skin Deep

A delightful history of cosmetics, I very much enjoy the connections the author draws between feminine agency and the usage of cosmetics. As a feminist who wears makeup, adores makeup and researching the history of makeup, I am charmed and delighted, I was expecting something far less agreeable in tone.

I do believe that we claim cosmetics, artifice as an outlet for expression, a demonstration of strength. I do think that self expression through cosmetics and attire is a wonderful thing (one I believe men are beginning more and more to participate in, following very much the pattern laid out in this book, beginning with creams, and eventually leading to being able to sell them blue eyeshadow, lord knows my husband is a loyal Max Factor customer... which is frankly one of the reasons I married him).

It's engagingly written and generally quite a delight to read, not mention impeccably researched, and written without the writer doing very much in the way of stating her own opinions as facts. I can say the research is excellent with some authority as I very much enjoy reading primary sources on vintage and historical beauty recipes and rituals, from translated Latin cosmetics recipes to 1970s hairdressing manuals, and this book nails it all, a fun, and informative read.

Thank you Mr. Resnick

It is a wonderful thing to be able to sit down to a book written by an author who loves his characters and has a story to tell. This is the fourth book in the Starship series and is the best one so far. If you are reading this review then you have read the previous novels, so I won't spoil the pleasure of reading this one by discussing the plot. Let just say that Mr. Resnick has a story arc that is logical and is exciting. The characters are well drawn and memorable. The author has even created some new ones that are a welcome addition to the series. The last part of the book contains a battle that literally had me cheering as I read it. It was vivid and exciting as any battle scenes from any action movie. I look forward to the next and I suspect final entry of this series. Again thank you Mr. Resnick for a very very good time.

I don't know why I decided to read Book 1 of Resnicks series.After finishing book 4,I still don't know why.The only thing that I can say is that I really enjoyed all 4 and can't wait for the fifth installment.The caste of characters are unusual and somewhat comic-bookish (nothing wrong with that at all),but they are very entertaining.I strongly recommend these books and might figure out why after Book 10.

Pretty good read

The story is moving along pretty nicely. The characters a still slightly flat in terms of development (I'm joking here...they are about as deep as a puddle).

It's a great read simply because it's a fun distraction and it moves along with great pacing. There is action followed by down time followed by action all leading up to a climax.

A fun little distraction that I highly recommend.

Excellent second book

This book continues the story nicely. By now the Kingpriest has been in power for 20 years, and is bent on eradicating all evil from Krynn. The Kingpriest makes the wizards of Krynn his next target, and means to destroy or capture all the towers of sorcery. Again, the Kingpriest and Cathan grow as characters, although in different directions, as the plot unfolds.

There's a lot of foreshadowing, and since I've forgotten much of the other DL books my suspense is building to see how things will play out!

One thing I really like about this trilogy so far is watching how good, if taken too far, can lead to evil. The story also shows how undying loyalty can lead to dishonor.

Finally, I wish all DL novels were written like this trilogy. This series seems like it is meant for a slightly older/ smarter audience, which is a welcome change from other fantasy. The author pulls this off nicely without being wordy or overly descriptive.

The ending was very cool and I'm ready to read the next one.

I am not sure how many dragonlance books have been published to date but whatever the number I am sure to have read 95% or more of them. Some of them are good, some great, some not so good. The first two books of Chris Peirson's Kingpriest Trilogy are by far the best written set that has been published since the Legends Series. In fact these books are better than the recent War of Souls Trilogy by the creators Weis and Hickman. I know that might seem like blasphemy, but, the Divine Hammer and its predecessor make you really care for, root,like and hate each and every charater in the novels. A terrific read I highly recommend.

Awsome! A must for all DL fans

I have read about 95% of all the DL books as well, and nothing upsets me more than finding information in a book that is contadicting to the others that I read.
Well this one blew me away, being that it ties in information from a number of other DL novels I was really inpressed with how it was all layed out and kind of blended in.
I cant wait to read the last one!
A well deserved 5 stars!!

In addition to being the place of the origin and evolution of these genres, the Antwerp art market gave rise to the concept of artistic identity, in which favorite forms and favorite themes by an individual artist gained consumer recognition.

In Peasant Scenes and Landscapes, Larry Silver examines the emergence of pictorial kinds—scenes of taverns and markets, landscapes and peasants—and charts their evolution as genres from initial hybrids to more conventionalized artistic formulas. The relationship of these new genres and their favorite themes reflect a burgeoning urbanism and capitalism in Antwerp, and Silver analyzes how pictorial genres and the Antwerp marketplace fostered the development of what has come to be known as "signature" artistic style. By examining Bosch and Bruegel, together with their imitators, he focuses on pictorial innovation as well as the marketing of individual styles, attending particularly to the growing practice of artists signing their works. In addition, he argues that consumer interest in the style of individual artists reinforced another phenomenon of the later sixteenth century: art collecting. While today we take such typical artistic formulas as commonplace, along with their frequent use of identifying signatures (a Rothko, a Pollock), Peasant Scenes and Landscapes shows how these developed simultaneously in the commercial world of early modern Antwerp.

About the Author
Mark Griffith is a professor of classics and of theater, dance, and performance studies at the University of California, Berkeley. He lives in Albany, CA.  Trained at Cambridge, Griffith is an enormously accomplished expert on the Greek Tragedies. Glenn W. Most studied at Harvard, Oxford, and Yale and is currently professor of ancient Greek at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, and a visiting member of the Committe on Social Thought at the University of Chicago.  He divides his time between Pisa, Florence, and Chicago. Richmond Lattimore (1906–1984) was a poet, translator, and longtime professor of Greek at Bryn Mawr College. David Grene (1913–2002) taught classics for many years at the University of Chicago. He was a founding member of the Committee on Social Thought.

Do not buy the kindle edition of this book if ...

Do not buy the kindle edition of this book if you need to discuss it in class or cite it in a paper. There are no page numbers and the line numbers are completely messed up. I mean seriously, how can there be 8 lines between line 10 and line 15? What was the publisher/editor thinking?

The Kindle Edition Has an Unnecessary, Annoying Pan/Zoom Pop-Up Widow Feature

The book is an excellent collection of exemplary translations of Greek tragedies. However, the Kindle version of this book is now formatted so that an annoying Pan/Zoom pop-up window appears in the middle of the screen every time the reader attempts to go to the next page in the accustomed manner by tapping the screen. The reader can go forward or backward only by swiping the screen. If the swipe is done imprecisely, up comes the annoying Pan/Zoom window. This feature may be useful for reading some fixed type size PDFs, but it is a useless annoyance when trying to read a regular Kindle book. The type size is easy to adjust using the top menu. Why would anyone want to change type size on random pages using the Zoom pop-up window feature? Panning is usually not possible or necessary because all the text fits within the screen.

It requires a special kind of genius to take something that is working well and "improve" it by adding useless annoyances. The Kindle version of this book, and any other Kindle book, should not require the Pan/Zoom pop-up window feature. This feature is an unnecessary annoyance for readers who just want to read a Kindle book in the ordinary manner without panning and zooming every page.

Great and engaging translations, but don't read the short introductions if you're not already familiar with the corresponding tragedies - spoiler alerts are not issued. The commentary at the back is very brief as to not burden the reader, but quite helpful. The cover art is also very appealing, definite bookshelf material.

About the Author
After teaching English in secondary schools in New York, Dr. Arthur Kraft became Coordinator of Psychological Services for the Ridgewood, New Jersey public schools during the 1960s, while completing a Ph.D. at Columbia University and obtaining Diplomate status in school psychology. He then relocated to California, where he served 26 years as Senior Psychologist for the Long Beach schools. He conducted filial therapy groups with parents both in Ridgewood and Long Beach. Dr. Kraft's book on the subject, entitled Are You Listening to Your Child, published in 1973, is the foundation for Parents as Therapeutic Partners. His journal articles include "The Child as Parent," "Discipline as Curriculum," "A Democratic Approach to Problem-Solving in Junior High School," and "Down with (Most) Special Education Classes," which advocated mainstreaming of handicapped students where possible before the trend became popular. Dr. Kraft's book on communication and problem solving in schools is The Living Classroom, published in 1975.

Garry L. Landreth, Ed. D., is a Regents Professor in the Department of Counselor Education at the University of North Texas, where he is founder and Director of the Center for Play Therapy, the largest play therapy training program in the nation. Dr. Landreth is a former Chair of the Board of Directors of the Association for Play Therapy and recipient of the prestigious Virginia Axline Distinguished Professional Award for his work in conceptualizing and promoting Child-Centered Play Therapy. His publications include Play Therapy: The Art of the Relationship and Play Therapy Interventions with Children's Problems. Dr. Landreth has been a featured speaker at play therapy conferences throughout the United States and in Canada, China, Europe, and South Africa.

Great for therapists and psychotherapy students & their clients

Good child behavioral case examples that can be used in multiple disciplines with attachment problems between children and their parents. Great list of basic play equiptment for clinical and parent play sessions. A real relationship building tool.
