Under Timoney's leadership, crime declined in every major category, especially homicide. A similar decrease not only in crime but also in corruption marked Timoney's tenure in his next position as police chief of Miami, a post he held from 2003 to January 2010.

From a rookie in the streets of the South Bronx to police chief in Miami, lifelong cop Timoney reflects on a career that put him at the center of many recent debates and advances in law enforcement. Born in Dublin, Timoney moved to New York in 1961 as a child and joined the NYPD after graduating from high school. He describes patrolling the streets during the turbulent late '60s, when protests and civil unrest ripped at the city's social and political seams. Picking up a bachelor's degree and two master's degrees along the way, Timoney rose steadily through the ranks, working directly for famed police commissioners like Ray Kelly and Bill Bratton. An advocate for community policing as the way the NYPD addressed quality of life issues (e.g., vandalism and truancy) that are often precursors of major crimes, Timoney helped develop and refine departmental policies on everything from the use of deadly force to race relations. After retiring from the NYPD in 1996, Timoney spent four years as police commissioner of Philadelphia before becoming Miami's chief of police in 2002, retiring in 2009. Not the Autobiography You May Be Expecting

Police work is as much art as it is science. From reading people to quickly figuring out solutions to very difficult problems, it takes a special type of person to make it from the lowest rungs of a police department to the highest rungs. John Timoney is one of the few people that has the skills to operate within large police departments and make significant changes along the way.
Timoney has not written a typical autobiography, and for that I am thankful. He does discuss various aspects of his career, starting when he was a police trainee and extending through his time as the Chief of the Miami PD. While detailing his career he does include some of the highlights and more memorable moments of a life time fighting crime. In most instances, though, he correlates the moment in his career with a lesson about police work. From shootouts, to violent protests, Timoney always explains why it was an important event and what could be (and was) learned from it.
One of the more refreshing aspects of the book is his acknowledgement that he is human and makes mistakes like the rest of us. Too many books of this type highlight only the positive events and decisions without discussing the mistakes and errors. Timoney, on the other hand, is more than willing to discuss his mistakes and what he learned from making the mistakes.
The book was very well written, with the occasional slip of police lingo making appearances now and again. It is refreshing to find a police officer who can write with the ability that Timoney can. At times the book reads like a novel and is always interesting. This book will appeal to a broad range of readers, from the police buff and historian to current ranking officers that would like to learn the magic that was behind Timoney's successes.

All hyperbole and nonsense from a cop that worked with "Timid" Timoney

I worked with John Timoney for many years in a number of different details. What Timoney fails to mention is that he was one of the most reviled cops, bosses and subsequent chiefs on the job. Why? Because he was a political manipulator, would stab his own mother in the back to get a promotion or ascertain a detail without actually putting in the work. He was also one of the most racist cops I'd ever worked with and I'm white, of the majority. He treated the folks he swore to protect in the lower income areas of the city as literal "things" as he liked to call them, or, "savages". He also claims to have been a chief architect of the comstat program the NYPD has become famous for, when in fact it was NOT Timony but a combo of Jack Maples, Chief Anemone, Commissioner Bratton and Mayor Rudy Giuliani - Timoney was a background guy all the way, though when it came time to take bows for the great decline in crime in NYC he never met a camera or journalist he didn't like and would espouse his great accomplishments - he became almost a parody of himself, if you knew him you'd understand that analogy. This book is full of self adulation and personal back slapping - his personal life transcended from his professional life, as his son was arrested for possession of narcotics, and a litany of other crimes - we, the cops that new him best, attributed his horrendous personal life to his true love, Dewars Scotch. If you want to read pulpy comic book like fiction, then this is for you - but if you are looking for an insight to the real inner workings of the NYPD during some of its most tumultuous times then steer clear of this self absorbed work of poorly written fiction.

Chief Timoney does an excellent job outlining, not only his career, but also providing a vivid picture of the best in law enforcement along with the struggles of being a top cop. He holds nothing back and yet he emerges as a true professional.
