Chinese Labor in a Korean Factory: Class, Ethnicity, and Productivity on the Shop Floor in Globalizing China, by Jaesok Kim

Chinese Labor in a Korean Factorydraws on fieldwork in a multinational corporation (MNC) in Qingdao, China, and delves deep into the power dynamics at play between Korean management, Chinese migrant workers, local-level Chinese government officials, and Chinese local gangs. Anthropologist Jaesok Kim examines how governments, to attract MNCs, relinquish parts of their legal rights over these entities, while MNCs also give up portions of their rights as proxies of global capitalism by complying with local government guidelines to ensure infrastructure and cheap labor. This ethnography demonstrates how a particular MNC struggled with the pressure to be increasingly profitable while negotiating the clash of Korean and Chinese cultures, traditions, and classes on the factory floor of a garment corporation.

Chinese Labor in a Korean Factory pays particular attention to common features of post-socialist countries. By analyzing the contentious collaboration between foreign management, factory workers, government officials, and gangs, this study contributes not only to the research on the politics of resistance but also to how global and local forces interact in concrete and surprising ways.

Review
"In recent years there has been steady growth in the literature on global supply chains and labour in China. In Chinese Labor in a Korean Factory, Jaesok Kim adds to this scholarship with an ethnography that is sensitive to managerial strategy, ethnicity, and local embeddedness . . . There is much to recommend Chinese Labor in a Korean Factory. First, it takes the issue of ethnicity seriously . . . Kim's study is an important first foray into this field, and provides insights on the relationship between ethnicity and identity in globalizing China."—Eli Friedman, Pacific Affairs

"Kim's contribution lies not only in his detailed and thorough description of the ways in which the factory management controls labor, but also in his sophisticated treatment of the concept of factory regime as an evolving construct . . . In chronicling the evolution of the factory's regime of labor management, Kim makes an important contribution to our understanding of the broader processes of localization and globalization of capitalist practices . . . It should be of interest not only to students and scholars of China, but also to those of labor, industry, and global capitalism."—Jianhua Zhao, Journal of Anthropological Research

"A pleasing study of how cultural assumptions influence the organization of work in a Chinese factory. The research is solid, insightful and memorable."—William Jankowiak, University of Nevada, Las Vegas

"This illuminating book, an ethnographic study of a Korean garment factory in North China, is an excellent example of a locally embedded globalization case, in which the author studies global production, the Chinese state and cultural negotiations of nationhood, ethnicity, culture and identity of the workers at the workplace."—Pun Ngai, author of Made in China: Factory Women Workers in a Global Workplace

Take a Tour of Europe and the Holy Land with Mark Twain the inimitable Missouri traveler
By C. M Mills
Mark Twain is the Lincoln of our literature. Sam Clemens (1835-1910) wrote Huckleberry Finn in 1885 which has been acclaimed as our greatest American novel. Lesser known are his wonderful travelogues: "Roughing It' "Following the Equator"; "Life on the Mississippi and "The Innocents Abroad" published in 1869. This book is worth reading even 140 years after its publication. Twain style is a joy to read for he was a born storyteller and communicates his thoughts well on the page.
Twain was a reporter who joined the six month expedition to Europe and the Middle East on board the steamer "Quaker City." The pleasure tour had
been organized by the famous pastor Henry Ward Beecher (sibling of Harriet Ward Beecher) and Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman. Neither of these notable made the trip citing other obligations.
Twain roomed with a young man from Elmira New York. He would later visit Elmira and meet his friend's sister Olivia. She would become his wife and the mother of the couple's three daughters.
The Innocents Abroad is a long book of 400,000 words covering over 500 densely written pages. Twain takes a sardonic, humorous view of European art as he guides us through the Louvre, Florence Italy and Rome. We visit London, Paris and meet with Czar Alexander II in the Crimea. Twain had a keen reporter's eye and a humorist's ability to paint word pictures of his fellow passengers, tour guides and natives of the fascinating cities and countries he visited on a busy itinerary.
As a Presbyterian pastor I found the most interesting part of the book dealt with Twain's tour of Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, Greece and Israel. He was upset by the filth, disease and cruelty he saw in the land of Moses and Jesus Christ. Despite all his asides and digressions the observant reader can gain a good picture of what these places were like in 1869. Twain was an agnostic but knew his Bible.
Mark Twain was our greatest author. In this fine book you will get to know this fascinating man better as he shares his globe trotting journey with his readers.

The funniest book ever written-in the history of time!
By A Customer
Ok, maybe that is a minor overstatement, but this is one hilarous book, to be read by people who have travelled, who plan to travel, and generally, people who want to laugh. A lot.
The book is also surprising for its timeless points about the journeying of certain upper white, middle class people going on a grand tour of Europe. I frequently had to remind myself that it was written in 1869 because his observations and the behavior of his shipmates is so close to the way people I studied abroad with acted-only a few years ago.
Twain also puts those "cosmopolitan" people who claim to have traveled, but don't know anything about any place they have been but and just like to lord it over everyone else that they have "travelled" and you have not.
Reading this book is like listening to a very wise, old man tell you about his adventures. Its not like a book, more like one long conversation. Twain takes nothing seriously-not himself, his fellow travelers or the places they visit. The words are another adventure-sometimes, you know he is setting you up for something, other times he is serious for a while, then you end up in the middle of a joke.
I know this is against the rules, but the other posters who don't like this book-don't be so serious and p.c. all the time. Twain is making humorous observations, at a time when a different standard was acceptable. Not to mention, he does manage to get a few zingers in there about what people are willing to accept and what they do not.
You will laugh yourself silly and want to book a trip-not to Europe, just to anywhere, after reading this book.

Twain, the Terrible Tourist
By Stephen A. Haines
Cliches aside, retrieving the outlook of mid-19th Century isn't easy. Having successfully concluded the upheaval of the War Between the States, the people of the USA, while bruised, felt confident. Their sense of righteousness was enhanced - they'd quelled a rebellion and freed slaves. Some took that attitude to other lands. The 1867 SS Quaker City excursion to Europe and the "Holy Land" was but one of those forays. It was special in that it carried one of the more discerning observers the United States had produced - Sam Clemens of Hannibal, Missouri and points West. He was to post letters to the San Francisco newspaper "Daily Alta California" describing the journey. The trip and the account opened Clemens' eyes and those of his readers over numerous legends.

In Clemens' baggage was a strong religious sense imparted by his mother, Jane. This cargo was balanced by Twain's more worldly experience on the Mississippi and his life in the mining communities in the West. When he crossed the gangplank to board the steamer, his gaze was sceptical and his pen ascerbic. His portrayal of the Quaker City's passengers began as they traversed the Atlantic, but it is his depiction of "foreigners" in their homelands that both shocks and enlightens. Starting with the Azores stopover, Clemens' observations of the islands are a tribute to their charms. Of the people, however, he has little positive to impart. They are dirty, noisy, conniving and devious. In general, they're "not American".

The use of the "innocents" is exemplified by Twain's description of contact with the Europeans. Educated in the minimal language training of the day, the travellers struggled to impart their wishes in French shops and restaurants. Twain seems to lay responsibility for this on the French "failure to understand their own language", but his description of the exchanges makes it clear where the problem lay. There was another side to this coin, however. Europeans were caught up in their own affairs. The United States was a remote and unknown element to them - "they'd had a war with somebody recently". Twain notes his shipmates were even then tinged with the arrogance that would fully blossom later. Respect for "tradition" had a variety of expressions in the "Quaker City" passengers. Twain depicts them all with delightful detachment.

As the ship made landfall in Mediterranean ports, Clemens and his comrades visit the "standard" tourist haunts. Paris is a must, Genoa is a treat, Rome is a maze of cathedrals and art galleries. Quickly disenchanted with "guides" he renames them all "Ferguson" and rebukes them at every opportunity. Michaelangelo seems so pervasive in Rome that the Pilgrims ask if Greek or Egyptian artefacts are his work - to the consternation of the "Ferguson" of the day. Twain's flexibility and ability to adapt to events leads some of the "innocents" to take the train from Rome to Naples - a city under quarantine. While the "Quaker City" lies still in the harbour, Twain and his companions tour the city and visit Vesuvius. A similar ploy works in Greece.

It is in the "Holy Land" that Clemens' descriptive powers and distrust of "authorities" flowers most brilliantly. Like many of his fellow passengers, he's been subjected to many tales from "Scripture" and a spate of earlier travel writers in Palestine. Unable to criticise the Bible outright, he lets the words speak for themselves, allowing logic and common sense to question dogma. The effusive travel writers, who had insisted Palestine was a "paradise" are brought out in contrast with Twain's observations of the barren desolation that was the Levant. He is scathing in his criticism of people who fabricate conditions there in order to sell their books. His veracity, of course, nearly had the opposite effect. "The Innocents Abroad" manuscript was originally rejected by Twain's publisher.

Sam Clemens' reputation was "made" with this book. It touched on many aspects of how people in the United States viewed themselves and the world. The subtle, but incisive, comments on tradition and legend were seeds finding fertile ground in a dynamic nation setting the practical foremost. "Innocents" was a challenge to dogmas and a paean to the sense of "realism" that permeated the post-Civil War era. The "Romantic" Era, still evident in mid-19th Century in the earlier accounts of Palestine, would be whisked aside. "Innocents" would be instrumental in that sweeping it away. [stephen a. haines - Ottawa, Canada]

Not the best in the series actually the worst.
By Amazon Customer
Having read all of Mindy Neff's book in her popular series I was a bit disappointed with this one.

A few reasons.
It is hard to really explain that the character wasn't as likeable as her previous characters had been.

Grant (male character who was in her previous books and was liked in those as a secondary character) came off as a jerk at the start.
Abbe Shea (the female character) can't understand WHY he is upset that she came to his place on false pretenses. Not to mention that their is a price on her head and she didn't CARE that she was subjecting others to murderers.
There wasn't that chemistry between her male and female character that she had in her previous Shotgun Ridge books (which I have them all).
In her previous books the love making was not as graphic as this one was. I really was disappointed to see her talk about her [...] and a few other seens. If I knew it would be that smutty I wouldn't have bought this book.

The Pop (her adoptive father and Grant's biological father) in the book is a thug.
Sorry, he was too coward to get out of a criminal family.
Yet, we should all love him?
Why for having people killed?
Laudering money?
Being in the Mafia?

Grant gets shot in the shoulder and passes out?
Then an hour later he is heading a mission AFTER he passes out, takes Abbe's daughter to the medicine doctor (he passes out but can drive) and is doctored by the medicine doctor, then leads a group of ex-Army men to rescue Abbe.
It doesn't add up and neither does this book.

It gets ONLY three stars because
this is a book in her Shotgun Ridge Series (I love the previous 6 stories and 1 online Shotgun Ridge story), because she does have some of her characters back in the mix and that she sends a message that her next story might just be Clay going after Cherry Peyton (Wyatt's neighbor from the first story).

Abbe Stands Up
By Amazon Customer
Abbe Shea takes her young daughter and flees the mob. Covering her tracks she lands in Montana at the ranch of Grant Callahan, a Special Forces veteran, who doesn't like strangers landing at his private airfield. Two year old Jolene charms the man who breeds million dollar race horses. Callahan is intrigued by the mystery woman but the career bachelor has no intention of handing over his heart even if everyone in town thinks it is a good idea, especially "The Geezers," a group of old men who play matchmaker for the bachelors in town. Soon there is a parade of strangers through the town, including the FBI and the mob? Callahan tries to protect Abbe and Jolene while figuring out the good guys from the bad. How far will he go to protect Abbe and Jolene? Will his multimillion dollar horse breeding operation survive Abbe? Mindy Neff weaves a tale with lots of action, twists and surprises. Abbe and Grant are well developed characters put in their places by an all too cute two year old with a doll named Lambie-pie. This is a must read.

Afghanistan Declassified: A Guide to America's Longest War, by Brian Glyn Williams

Nearly 100,000 U.S. soldiers were deployed to Afghanistan at the height of the campaign, fighting the longest war in the nation's history. But what do Americans know about the land where this conflict is taking place? Many have come to have a grasp of the people, history, and geography of Iraq, but Afghanistan remains a mystery.

Originally published by the U.S. Army to provide an overview of the country's terrain, ethnic groups, and history for American troops and now updated and expanded for the general public, Afghanistan Declassified fills in these gaps. Historian Brian Glyn Williams, who has traveled to Afghanistan frequently over the past decade, provides essential background to the war, tracing the rise, fall, and reemergence of the Taliban. Special sections deal with topics such as the CIA's Predator drone campaign in the Pakistani tribal zones, the spread of suicide bombing from Iraq to the Afghan theater of operations, and comparisons between the Soviet and U.S. experiences in Afghanistan.

To Williams, a historian of Central Asia, Afghanistan is not merely a theater in the war on terror. It is a primeval, exciting, and beautiful land; not only a place of danger and turmoil but also one of hospitable villagers and stunning landscapes, of great cultural diversity and richness. Williams brings the country to life through his own travel experiences—from living with Northern Alliance Uzbek warlords to working on a major NATO base. National heroes are introduced, Afghanistan's varied ethnic groups are explored, key battles—both ancient and current—are retold, and this land that many see as only a frightening setting for prolonged war emerges in three dimensions.

fast paced book, incredibly informative, very descriptive
By Emily Stevenson
I read this book in just two days, it reads like a novel it is so well written. For anyone who has read the Kite Runner, Three Cups of Tea etc. or just wants to know what we are doing in this country, this book fills in all the blanks. Each chapter begins with one of the author's own adventures in Afghanistan, like living with pagan mountaineers, working with the US army, or traveling with an Afghan warlord. Then the subsequent chapter explores topics like Afghanistan's various warring ethnic groups, the history of the Soviet invasion, and the history of US warfare in this country since 9/11, ancient history etc. You don't have to be a specialist to really get sucked into this easy read. Williams obviously loves this beautiful but tragic country and you will too after you've read it. You also understand what we are there fighting for and how we are (and aren't!) following in the footsteps of previous invaders. Cool photos and maps too.

Best of the Best on Afghanistan
By constant reader
If you read only one book on Afghanistan this year, this book is the one to read. Insightful and unbiased, the author has no political agenda except to help the reader understand the Afghan people and the reasons for America's continued involvement in what has become Afghanistan's ongoing civil war. It answers the question "Why?" behind such events as our alliance with Pakistan and our continued support for Karzai's corrupt government. It also makes the significant point that the dynamics of the northern section of the country (consisting of Tajiks, Uzbeks, Hazaras, and other minorities) are very different from the southern Pashtun provinces, and it would be a mistake to assume there is a "one size fits all" solution to ending the war. Although the reader is presented with some unpleasant facts, the author is optimistic that a peaceful solution is possible.

Excellent overall guide to understanding the American military's deployment to Afganistan and what the future may hold
By Reader175
I bought this book initially looking for an overall read into the culture and mindset of the opponents our soldiers face on the battlefield there. I was surprised to find that the author is a PhD. in history who has actually travelled the land and writes from a wide range of personal experiences interacting with the people, land and prominent public figures. I'd recommend this book for anyone interested in learning about Afghanistan from the personal perspective of someone who obviously loves the land and the people, and who can help fill in the gaps from what we may not know about who the people fighting our soldiers are, and why.

As an interested American citizen, I found the authors personal experiences visiting warlords like Dostum and hunting down a pint at the Gandamack pub captivating and easy to read, and as a military veteran and former non-commissioned officer who served with the Army Special Operation Command's 75th Ranger Regiment, I found the more detailed explanations of the Taliban Insurgency as well as the use of drones and Pakistan' role in the war on terror to be enlightening and informative to anyone with a military background or experience.

This book is a satisfying read and provides exactly what it offers-a great overall survey of the land, culture and history of Afghanistan, and an interesting perspective from an actual historian who loves the country and has walked its hills and met its people.

The Wire Devils, by Frank L. Packard

Best known for his Jimmie Dale series of books, which have sold more than 3 million copies worldwide, Frank L. Packard first published The Wire Devils in 1918. A “wire thriller” that uses the booming railroads and telegraph lines of the old West as its backdrop for fast-paced adventure, The Wire Devils follows a criminal gang of the same name who hijack a railroad’s telegraph lines to glean information about profitable shipments. But foiling them again and again is the Hawk, the outlaw hero who robs from the robbers and is ultimately on the side of law and order.

Combining elements from dime-store novels and Packard’s own experience on the rails, The Wire Devils is at once a hybrid western and a thriller still worth reading nearly a century after it was written.

Early 20th Century Wire Thriller
By Bill Hough
The University of Minnesota Press has just reprinted Frank L. Packard's mystery novel "The Wire Devils," which the publisher refers to as a "wire thriller" that "uses the booming railroads and telegraph lines of the old West as its backdrop for fast-paced adventure by combining elements from dime-store novels and Packard's own experience." The story was originally published in 1918 and it reflects life in the west a century ago. Frank L. Packard (1877-1942) was a widely published Canadian writer of crime fiction. He was the author of nearly thirty books published from 1914 to 1938 and was previously a civil engineer for Canadian Pacific.

The story revolves around Harry Maul, better known as "The Hawk." As the story dawns The Hawk, reported to be just released from Sing Sing prison, is in the fictional western city of Selkirk. He is shadowing the titular criminal gang whose modus operandi involves tapping into the local railroad's telegraph network in order to communicate and share plans. Having cracked the Wire Devil's code, The Hawk manages to interfere with the gang's plans while staying ahead of the railroad's detective MacVightie and division superintendant Lanson. The story is told third person from The Hawk's perspective and that character's motives are the central mystery as the book unfolds. Your humble reviewer will not comment further on the plot for fear of spoiling the story.

Robert MacDougall, from the University of Western Ontario, writes an introduction explaining the significance of the book and providing the historical context in which it was published. He refers to the "wire thrillers" as "the high-tech thrillers of their day" comparing them to contemporary works by Tom Clancy and Clive Cussler. Ironically, the latter author is branching into historical fiction; his 2009 novel "The Wrecker" involves the titular character sabotaging an under-construction railroad in the Cascades.

MacDougall explains how Packard introduced the concept of a crime fighter with a dual identity. In addition to Harry Maul/The Hawk, he created Jimmie Dale/the Gray Seal, who fought crime in New York. As MacDougall points out, the concept behind these characters led to modern fictional dual-identity crime fighters such as Batman. While interesting, the reader might actually consider holding off on reading the introduction until after reading the novel because it does contain a mild spoiler.

The Wire Devils provides a glimpse into early 20th Century storytelling and is a fast-paced enjoyable novel.

By Curmudgeon
Mostly of interest for those fascinated by turn-of-the-20th-century steam railroading. I was interested particularly in the explanation of the gang's misuse of the railroad's telegraphic system (being experienced with teletype).

Writing style probably a little old fashioned and moralizing for modern tastes, but not as overwrought as much as, say, Clive Cussler's tales.

Telegraph devilry
By telegrapher
As a person with a significant interest in telegraph history, this fictional story was a fun romp through the possibilities of the use of the telegraph for nefarious purposes. I enjoyed it. It will be the subject of one of my future book and movie review columns in the Morse Telegraph Club's quarterly newsmagazine, "Dots & Dashes".

Heavenly Ambitions: America's Quest to Dominate Space, by Joan Johnson-Freese

In the popular imagination, space is the final frontier. Will that frontier be a wild west, or will it instead be treated as the oceans are: as a global commons, where commerce is allowed to flourish and no one country dominates? At this moment, nations are free to send missions to Mars or launch space stations. Space satellites are vital to many of the activities that have become part of our daily lives—from weather forecasting to GPS and satellite radio. The militaries of the United States and a host of other nations have also made space a critical arena—spy and communication satellites are essential to their operations. Beginning with the Reagan administration and its attempt to create a missile defense system to protect against attack by the Soviet Union, the U.S. military has decided that the United States should be the dominant power in space in order to protect civilian and defense assets. In Heavenly Ambitions, Joan Johnson-Freese draws from a myriad of sources to argue that the United States is on the wrong path: first, by politicizing the question of space threats and, second, by continuing to believe that military domination in space is the only way to protect U.S. interests in space.

Johnson-Freese, who has written and lectured extensively on space policy, lays out her vision of the future of space as a frontier where nations cooperate and military activity is circumscribed by arms control treaties that would allow no one nation to dominate—just as no one nation's military dominates the world's oceans. This is in the world's interest and, most important, in the U.S. national interest.

Review

"Heavenly Ambitions should be read by everyone who makes policy, or who thinks seriously about policy. By highlighting dangers such as confusing desirability with feasibility and ignoring the increasingly global nature of space, Johnson-Freese points out key pitfalls of the current U.S. approach to space policy, and suggests a more productive way forward."—David Wright, Union of Concerned Scientists

"[Heavenly Ambitions] provides an understanding of the almost indecipherable national security space bureaucracy and all its stakeholders, [and] is the first work to measure these triumphant images against the realities of technology and politics."—Quest

"Joan Johnson-Freese clearly identifies the present state of America's space program, the critical issues and challenges the United States faces, the urgent need for action, and the course the United States should follow in its future endeavors in space. Heavenly Ambitions is a book that should be read and heeded by all those involved in the making of this nation's policies in space."—George Abbey, former director, NASA Johnson Space Center

"A thoroughly researched and praiseworthy book."—Astronomy Now

"A detailed, well-written, and accessible book."—Geopolitics

"[Johnson-Freese] rightly discusses at length the emerging U.S.-China space relationship. . . . One of the most convincing parts of the book is devoted to the risks of miscommunication between Washington and Beijing on their respective strategic intentions in space."—Survival: Global Politics and Strategy

Solid Discussion of National Security Space Issues
By Roger D. Launius
"Heavenly Ambitions," by space policy scholar Joan Johnson-Freese, discusses "how our approach to space over the past two decades has squandered a once huge reservoir of goodwill toward American efforts in space" (p xii). Johnson-Freese's central argument revolves around the issue of "control" employed in discussing national security issues on Earth does not work in when considering the "high ground" of space. She comments that it, so ubiquitous in studies of national security issues, obscures more than it illuminates.

In many respects this book is a response to the belligerent language of the Bush administration, especially as manifested in the 2006 National Space Policy. That policy statement drew fire when first released because of its strident comments about U.S. perquisites: "the United States will: preserve its rights, capabilities, and freedom of action in space; dissuade or deter others from either impeding those rights or developing capabilities intended to do so; take those actions necessary to protect its space capabilities; respond to interference; and deny, if necessary, adversaries the use of space capabilities hostile to U.S. national interests" (p. 60).

Johnson-Freese's chapters walk through these issues associated with national security space in a chronological manner. She comments on the evolution of U.S. Space policy, the debate over space weapons, strategic communications, diplomacy and arms control, and the global aspects of spaceflight.

So what does all of this mean? That is, of course, the central question of all historical study. After a more than fifty-year gestation it is now apparent that space is central to the national security needs of the United States. That may well have been true in the 1950s, but it has become abundantly clear in the post-cold war era. The clarity of the cold war era, something commented on repeatedly since the demise of the Soviet Union, is now gone and is not likely to be replaced anytime in the foreseeable future. A new multinational great power situation exists with the United States clearly at the top of the pyramid but enjoying a lessoning superiority with every year. How do the nation's leaders stem that tide to ensure the welfare of the U.S. for the future? There is a great deal at stake in terms of the access to and control over Earth's orbit. Johnson-Freese does not overstate the importance this situation. The next few years may prove decisive in terms of establishing a regime of space control that will have profound implications for terrestrial geopolitics.

Can space dominance plans survive rational analysis?
By James A. Vedda
Following up on her previous book "Space as a Strategic Asset," Joan Johnson-Freese exposes the inconsistencies, inaccuracies, and deceptions behind the advocacy for deployment of space weapons and long-range missile defense systems. Even if the technology and the resources to deploy such systems were available today (which they are not, she argues), there are serious strategic and diplomatic pitfalls associated with this path.
As in many political controversies, the debate over military space capabilities too often pushes aside facts, unbiased analyses, and common-sense decision-making in favor of oversimplified emotional appeals, partisan posturing, and stakeholder lobbying. Among the many questionable arguments that the author tackles head-on is one that claims space is just another medium of inevitable human conflict that should be treated the same as land, sea, or air: the U.S. should seek superiority and dominance. The author makes a strong case that there are significant differences in the medium of space that make it unadvisable to adopt a military space doctrine that closely mimics the traditional warfighting doctrine of the other areas. She also notes that when the "space should be treated the same" advocates are confronted with the fact that the land, sea, and air domains all live with rules of behavior and limits on actions, they quickly switch gears and claim that space is different and should have no restrictions.
A short review can't do justice to all the issues that the author addresses, which she backs up with rigorous research. Her aim seems to be to expand the debate and debunk myths rather than to propose comprehensive solutions, although her final chapter makes the case for better international coalition-building, recognizing that the U.S. doesn't hold all the cards in space anymore, and is unlikely to do so again regardless of its level of space investment.
Some readers may question whether this discussion is necessary, since Ronald Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative is history and George W. Bush is no longer in office. The author convincingly shows that the issue hasn't gone away, and in fact has persisted across generations since the beginning of the space age regardless of who was in power.
The content of the book is thought-provoking and deserves to be considered alongside other positions on this matter. The layout of the book needs some improvement, however. The font size is small, and in the block quotes that the author uses frequently, the font is even smaller. It could use some pictures or graphics to break up the text, but there are none. One gets the impression that the publisher was trying to produce this volume in as few pages as possible. Definitely a candidate for a Kindle edition so the fonts can be adjusted.

Shades of Mercy, by Anita Lustrea, Caryn Dahlstrand Rivadeneira

It’s 1954 and the world is about to change—including the far Northwoods of Maine. But that change can’t happen soon enough for fourteen-year-old Mercy Millar. Long tired of standing in as the “son” her father never had, Mercy’s ready for the world to embrace her as the young woman she is—as well as embrace the forbidden love she feels.

When childhood playmates grow up and fall in love, the whole community celebrates. But in the case of Mercy and Mick, there would be no celebration. Instead, their relationship must stay hidden. Good girls do not date young men from the Maliseet tribe, at least not in Watsonville, Maine. When racial tensions escalate and Mick is thrown in jail under suspicion of murder, Mercy nearly loses all hope—in love, in her father, and in God Himself.

Review

Anita Lustrea and Caryn Rivadeneira have joined together to write a compelling story of civil rights, racial equality, and coming of age in 1954 Maine. Mercy Millar lives on a farm where she helps with all the farm chores. In fact, her father calls her the "son he never had." Her father often hires Maliseets (the local Native-American tribe) to help with farm work and pays them well for their work. One of the Maliseets is Mick, who is in love with Mercy. This is their story as told by Mercy to her granddaughter Laurel.

An assortment of townspeople round out the story as it unfolds. Mercy's best friend Molly Carmichael has a sister who has run away with a Maliseet, and this makes Molly's father hate the Maliseets to the point that he seeks revenge by falsely accusing Mick of murder. Mercy's father calls his attorney-brother to come and help Mick out, but it takes two weeks for the whole episode to straighten itself out. In the meantime, Hurricane Edna hits the town, and Mick's brother pulls Molly's father out of his store when he becomes trapped.

There are so many intricate points to the plot of this book that they keep the reader involved LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG after bedtime. These two authors have collaborated to bring about a book that will not leave readers after they finish it. This book fits in a class with Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird.

You can find an interview with the authors here.

Five Stars, Two Thumbs Up, and farm fresh produce. I cannot recommend this book enough. No reader will regret it.

Shades of Mercy by Anita Lustrea and Caryn Rivadeneira is set in the 1950's on a farm in Maine, three topics I love to read about. It's not another fluffy romance, but rather digs deep into the racial tensions of the townspeople and the Indian Tribe of the Maliseets.

The book flowed along perfectly. The Christian slant to this book flows nicely as well, without being preachy at all except for a chapter in the middle. The romance aspect of the book actually seemed realistic, unlike most romance books.  A few things didn't quite add up for me, such as the town's people not liking the Maliseets at all and yet loving the food of a new chef in town, who had a Maliseet working in the kitchen, but I often find little things in books like that which bother me so it isn't held against this book.

I must admit, I read half the book the very day I received it and grabbed moments throughout the next day in order to find out how the book ended. It kept my attention the whole time and I enjoyed the characters. The ending leaves me wondering if this will be the first book in a series as it did end a bit abruptly.

Not many of us think about racial tension and inequality in generations so recent we can still touch the lines upon their faces; some of them haven’t even grayed. Shades of Mercy, by Anita Lustrea and Caryn Rivadeneira, sheds light upon those obscured years.

Set in the 1950s, Shades of Mercy, is a refreshingly sweet romance, grounded in the gritty truth of harsh farm life in rural Maine. Fifteen-year-old, Mercy, is of well respected stock, working diligently as the “son her father never had”, on their successful farm in Watsonville, Maine. Her family loves her and her parents are devout Christians raising their daughter to have strong biblical morals, and especially to have a respect for all human life, no matter what their race. So it’s only a minor problem that she’s fallen in love with Mick, a young Maliseet Indian.  At least, it’s only a minor problem in Mercy’s imagination.

Shadesof Mercy is a touching story...

-Abby Kelly, December 17, 2013, www.predatory-lies.com

The critical crisis in Shades of Mercy  revolves around deeply rooted racial injustices, prejudices and tensions between whites and American Indians. Here is where the book shines. More Maliseet characters walk onto the stage, and you get a glimpse into their lives, the injustices they’ve suffered for generations, the unhealthy way they’ve responded. You see the town’s people marginalize them farther afield.

I particularly liked one description of prayer, as explained by Mercy’s mom to Mercy’s friend, Molly Carmichael. “I just took the words that were pent up in my heart and spilled them out into the ear of God. You know any of us can do that. He is always waiting for us to be with Him.” That line right there made me glad to have read Shades of Mercy..

-Evelyn Bence, December 18, 2013, www.bookreporter.com

Shades of Mercy resounded with me. As a Chinese-American, I felt the racism and the prejudices of being different as a child. I don't remember as clearly, but in second grade, the teacher turned the whole class against me. She couldn't stand that I was different from her. She treated me like an outsider, and so did the whole class.

When I read that Mick and the Masileet tribe was under the same prejudices, I just felt for them. In some parts of the country, like South Carolina, there are still prejudices against people with different skin colors other than the superior white skin.

I liked how Mercy and her family treated the Masileets with respect and dignity, even though no one else thought to. They showed everyone mercy and compassion and that's how God's glory can shine through us.

-Rhyan Wong, January 1, 2014, www.creazian.blogspot.com

A good book, and as good as I had hoped it would be. It’s about the conflict between the whites and the Indians in Maine – I had no idea they had this kind of tension there in the 1950s! This book provided a fascinating look at some complicated situations that seemed true to life. It’s a growing up story about a young girl of 16 and her Indian boyfriend. The book was full of good writing, and had an excellent story – I would read more, either in this series or by these authors. I especially loved the description of a food pantry in Mercy’s house – it reminded me of the luscious food descriptions in Laura Ingalls Wilder’s book, Farmer Boy. I’m a sucker for food descriptions. ;) But this was a heartwarming and sweet story!

-Charity U-Austenite, January 7, 2014, www.austenitis.blogspot.com/

I'm always drawn to stories with Native American content. Learning that this was one of those books, I knew I had to read it. The storyline deals with how the Maliseet were mistreated and the prejudice that was shown to them.

There is a romance within this story, and while the story actually revolves largely around this romance, it still isn't the main focus, in my opinion. This is, more than anything, a sweet "coming of age" story. While I definitely consider it a young adult book, I do think it can be enjoyed by many adults, too.

Shades of Mercy was a relaxing read for me, even with the tough issues tackled. I enjoyed my time within its pages!

-Tammy Shelnut, December 20, 2013, www.bluerosesheart.blogspot.com/

The best part about the book was it’s everyday feel. The story felt genuine to the time period and the issues and it was a nice slice of life piece on Mercy herself. Nothing was overly dramatic but there was still tension in the story to keep you reading forward to learn the fate of Mercy and the town as whole. The pacing switched from perfect to a little to slow a few times throughout but not enough to cause any disinterest.

The biggest problem I had was the first person. I think the novel suffered not having an omniscient POV. Everything felt very biased and centered as nothing else was represented except how Mercy felt.

-Alexis Ostrow, January 28, 2014, http://lbookbliss.com

Shades of Mercy is a story of hope, respect, and honor intertwined with God’s truth, mercy, and love. As I first began to read this book, I was skeptical. I live on Colville Confederated Tribal Land in Washington State and am married to a tribal member. I thought this book might be written by those who are not really familiar with tribal issues, Native way of life, and prejudices. I was pleasantly surprised that the authors had done their homework and made the Native concerns authentic, and respectful. This was a pleasant read with strong characterization and convictions.
-Carmen Peone, www.carmenpeone.com, January 24, 2014

"Shades of  Mercy is a sweet story that gently takes you into the small sleepy community of Watsonville, Maine during a time of racial turmoil at the opposite end of the country.  It is a story that opens up a period of history that little has been written or spoken about in the United States.  This story has intrigued me to further research the Maliseet tribe.

Although forbidden, the love story has you cheering for Mercy and Mick to overcome their personal difficulties and follow through in their young blossoming romance.  This book was enjoyed on a Sunday afternoon in one sitting.  The clean content would be enjoyed by teens through adults."
-Ruth Kaup, www.composedbygrace.blogspot.com, February 3, 2014

Shades of Mercy is a touching coming of age story. Mercy lives in Maine on her parents farm. At 15, her life long friendship with Mick changes into something more. Then tragic events and old prejudices rear their ugly heads and life changes forever.

Such a touching read. The prejudices present in this book are still around today in one form or another. And so much of the lessons learned can be applied to everyone's lives. This is a great book for a book club or even in a class.
-Laura Pratt, http://www.hentownmama.com/, February 7, 2014

This was a wonderful, coming-of-age read.  In addition, it was historical fiction, which is one of my favorite genres.  The story covers a period of time in Maine's history when native Maliseets (among other Indian tribes) had been pushed out of their homes and land and into terrible living conditions, and then the push to restoration. It's not a part of American history I was familiar with, and so I found the story all the more fascinating.

Not your typical boy-meets-girl romance fluff -- Shades of Mercy was a wonderful, thoughtful read and left me wanting more.  Based on the prologue and the epilogue (the epilogue completely took me by surpr

Review

“Shades of Mercy transports you back to a simpler time, idyllic Maine backdrops, and all the complications of racial tension and forbidden love. You’ll cheer for the heroine and fall in love with the hero—a perfect recipe for a sweet, enduring read.”

—Mary DeMuth, speaker and author of The Muir House

“A glorious coming-of-age tale that captures the scenic beauty of Maine as well as the ugly underbelly of racism. I felt transported but saw a mirror of our current day. You will adore this tenderly told love story—a love story expressed on many different levels.”

—Chris Fabry, bestselling author and radio personality

“The human dynamics in a small town American community with a racially diverse population can be challenging. Some people walk with blinders on; others turn a cheek to the problem of social injustice. . . . Racism is often not easily identifiable or understood. Shades of Mercy highlights problems of the past that in some cases still exist, but also presents hope for a better future of understanding.”

—Brian Reynolds, Tribal Administrator, Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians

“Through the vivid lens of two lives set in small-town America, Anita and Caryn capture the heart of one of our biggest pieces of unfinished business: our relationship with First peoples. Anita and Caryn create with pitch-perfect detail the struggles and triumphs of the Maliseet people caught in a world of bigotry, suspicion, and ignorance—and just enough nobility to keep hope alive. A book that both instructs and entertains, but above all inspires.”

—Mark Buchanan, author of Your Church Is Too Safe

“Shades of Mercy is a re-creation of small town America complete with its warmth and innocence and a frothy brew of secrets. Tough moral and spiritual questions are faced head-on in this sweet tale of love and friendship.”

—Donna VanLiere, NY Times bestselling author of The Good Dream

“With an intimate, engaging voice, a budding young woman named Mercy extends compassion for the vestiges of the once proud Maine Maliseet, a Native American tribe short on resources yet long on wisdom and appreciation for beauty. A heartwarming tale—of the real meaning of grace—that stays with you. We need more stories about the intersection of Christianity and Native Americans, and this one is dignified and wonderful.”

—Linda S. Clare, author of The Fence My Father Built and A Sky without Stars

From the Back Cover

Someday
. . . her father will see Mercy for the young woman she has become.
. . . Mercy and Mick can move their relationship out from the shadows.
. . . Mercy will leave Maine’s Northwoods for the world outside.

Although other parts of the country were changing, the Maliseets of Maine’s Northwoods were still relegated to shanties on the local garage dump. Those who found work were farmhands, not bosses. And, of course, a Maliseet boy could never date the farmer’s daughter. Not ever.

All of that began to change in 1954. As racial tensions escalate, Mercy and her Maliseet boyfriend find it nearly impossible to hold onto their someday dream . . . then disaster strikes, looking surprisingly like the grace of God.

A poignant story
By Nancee
It is 1954 in a rural farm community in Northern Maine. Mercy's family owns a large potato farm where Mercy does the work of a teenaged boy. Her father, "Mr. Pop" teases her that she is the son he never had. He hires local Maliseet Indians to help work the farm. Mick is a Maliseet who has been a friend to Mercy since they were toddlers playing in the fields and building forts. As teenagers their friendship grows into an attraction that is forbidden. Racial tensions were heating up in the southern states while discord between Indian tribes and those who had overtaken their land were troubling other areas of the country, Maine being no exception. The Maniseet had been forced out of their homes to live in shacks on top of the area dump, and the situation is becoming volatile in Mercy's community.

Shades of Mercy is a story of troubled times and strained relationships. The descrimination presented in this story is realistic and historically accurate. Hard and honest work ethics are reminiscent of farm families of that time frame. Characters presented are authentic, colorful and convincing, as are the issues detailed in this account. Mercy's father represents a pillar of strength and compassion to his family and community through difficult times and distressing events. His strength of character and unwavering faith in God are exemplary and strong currents that are woven throughout this story. The elements of hope, grace, mercy and compassion run strong throughout the events characterized in this book.

Story-telling at its best
By Stephanie
Right away the book pulls you in. Get comfy because you won't be able to put it down. It is story-telling at its best. Mostly written in first person you feel like you are right there, watching the story unfold. I loved how the authors were able to demonstrate God's mercy through the characters in the story, and how they used an important part of Maine's cultural history to tell it. It is a fictitious story, but in a real historical setting. You could tell the authors went to great lengths to get it right. I came away feeling like there was a part of our history that had not yet been told... until now! I think this story would be a great one to tell in movie form!

A thoughtful book
By Karen Mulder
This is a thoughtful, pleasant read. Shades of Mercy takes place in Maine in the 1950s. It is tender and funny - I laughed out loud several times; and if you allow it to, it will challenge your heart when it comes to treating those who are different with dignity. This book is filled with hope and courage. It makes me want to go visit Maine and learn more about its history and people. I highly recommend it!
