Storytelling in Business: The Authentic and Fluent Organization, by Janis Forman

Storytelling can be a lifelong and life sustaining habit of mind, a personal inheritance that connects us to our communities. It can also serve as an organizational inheritance—a management tool that helps businesses to develop and thrive. For more than a decade, award-winning author Janis Forman has been helping executives to tell stories in service of their organizational objectives. In Storytelling in Business: The Authentic and Fluent Organization, she teaches readers everywhere how the craft of storytelling can help them to achieve their professional goals.

Focusing on the role of storytelling at the enterprise level, this book provides a research-driven framework for engaging in organizational storytelling. Forman presents original cases from Chevron, FedEx, Phillips, and Schering-Plough. Organizations like those featured in the book can make use of storytelling for good purposes, such as making sense of their strategy, communicating it, and developing or strengthening culture and brand. These uses of storytelling generate positive consequences that can have a sustained and significant impact on an organization. While large firms employ teams of digital and communication professionals, there's much that any of us can extrapolate from their experience to create stories to further our own objectives.

To show the reach of storytelling, Forman conducted 140 interviews with professionals ranging from CEOs in small and thriving firms, to corporate communication and digital media experts, to filmmakers—arguably the world experts in visual storytelling. She draws out specific lessons learned, and shows how to employ the road-tested strategies demonstrated by these leaders. Although this book focuses on storytelling in the context of business, Forman takes inspiration from narratives in literature and film, philosophical and social thought, and relevant concepts from a variety of other disciplines to instruct the reader on how to develop truly authentic and meaningful tales to drive success. A final chapter brings readers back to square one: the development of their own "signature story."

This book is a pioneering work that guides us beyond the pressure and noise of daily organizational life to influence people in a sustained, powerful way. It teaches us to be fluent storytellers who succeed by mastering this vital skill.

Review
"Forman brings a unique expertise in the humanities and management disciplines. Her years of experience advising MBA students on strategy projects that require storytelling and consulting with executives give her a unique advantage as an author. This book should appeal to business professionals who want to learn how the power of storytelling can move an organization through a large-scale change, inculcate a cultural change, or execute strategy. Consultants will appreciate the in-depth case studies, diagnostic checklists for crafting stories, and connections to management concepts."—Gail Fann Thomas, International Journal of Business Communication

"It is unusual to find solid research and practical guidance blended as skillfully as in this well-validated, readable, and practical guidebook . . . A valuable resource for rhetoricians as well as business scholars and practitioners. Highly recommended."—M. S. Myers, Choice

"Forman provides compelling case studies that show why storytelling works in a business setting. . . She writes, 'Stories can cut through the busyness to capture attention, engage and influence people, create meaning, exemplify values, and gain trust.'"—Sharon Shinn, BizEd

"In Storytelling in Business, Janis Forman shows how successful leaders leverage their ability to tell authentic, compelling stories. For scholars, this book offers intriguing applications of humanities concepts to important business phenomena. For business practitioners, this book offers thought-provoking lessons about how to inspire and motivate others through ethical storytelling."—Daphne A. Jameson, Cornell University

"Forman has produced a long-overdue and absolutely convincing account of the importance of narrative in directing, inspiring, and shaping organizations. There is a way to use storytelling to great advantage in any organization, and Forman's book will show you how."—Kathy Rentz, University of Cincinnati
"Many people in business understand that storytelling has the power to shape an organization's mission, engage employees, motivate customers, and influence public and shareholder perceptions. However, few people have the strategic and creative skills to develop their best stories and use them in the most compelling way. More than just a 'how to' book, Storytelling in Business provides a framework for understanding the purposes and elements of organizational storytelling. This book challenges us all to develop fluency in storytelling and guides us through the process of building a storytelling habit of mind."—Barbara Shwom, Northwestern University and coauthor of Business Communication: Polishing Your Professional Presence

Required reading for communication professionals AND executives
By Karl K
Two important observations about this brief, yet thorough book.

First, it should be required reading by EVERY corporate communications professional, and EVERY marketing professional.

Second, it should be required reading for any executive faced with a tough turnaround challenge or faced with implementing critical changes - whether a CEO of an entire enterprise or a manager of division or business line. (In fact, a subtitle for some of the examples Forman presents might be "How to Save Your Company with Storytelling.")

For a corporate communications or marketing professional, the story telling principles outlined in this book should be a key part of your arsenal. If you haven't created an "authentic" and "fluent" story or set of stories for your company or your product line, get this book and see how it gets done, and do it for your business. Through a series of case studies from four companies - Schering-Plough, FedEx, Chevron, and Philips - Forman delves deeply into how these businesses formulated their stories and implemented their delivery to key audiences. (Forman also brings in examples from other companies besides these four). Forman lays out the lessons learned and provides a set of checklists for you to use in developing your own stories. And while Forman's case studies come from large organizations, the principles and lessons will work for smaller enterprises.

However, the book is more than a how-to book. It also weaves in examples from literature, film, and personal stories.

For me, the most compelling part of the book is Forman's section on the turnaround of Schering-Plough, and how CEO Fred Hassan and his team used storytelling principles in their effort to resurrect what Hassan called "a wounded company in prolonged decline." By formulating a 5-chapter prospective narrative about where they planned to take the company, Hassan and his team laid out a turnaround vision that was used to communicate with employees, stakeholders, and regulators. This story dovetailed with the turnaround strategic plan and roadmap. As I was reading the Schering-Plough section of the book, it was astonishing to me how much effort and intelligence were brought to bear to formulate the story, deliver the story over a long time period, AND implement business changes necessary to make the story come true. Whatever the company paid Hassan and his team was not enough. Though the story was never quite finished as originally formulated - Schering-Plough eventually merged with Merck - you know that the ending would have occurred as planned.

"Storytelling in Business: The Authentic and Fluent Organization" - the end product of a four-year effort and hundreds of interviews with business leaders - is an outstanding treatment of this important business communication technique. And done in a little more than 200 pages.

Your New Engagement Strategy
By GFT
I have several storytelling books on my shelf, but Forman's, Storytelling in Business: The Authentic and Fluent Organization, is now my favorite. Her research for this book includes interviews with more than 140 storytelling experts including corporate communication directors, CEO's of small companies, business communication university faculty, and filmmakers. Using this research, she develops a four-component framework of organizational storytelling: authenticity, fluency, trust, and a focus on business objectives. While Forman admittedly leaves theoretical jargon behind, her book is built on a strong foundation of expert practical experience as well as the latest research. In addition to practical diagnostic checklists, Forman takes us on a journey through four best practice storytelling organizations. In a world where employees, customers, and investors insist on more engagement, Forman shows us how stories can help us make better connections with our constituents-- not only incorporating their stories into our organizational stories, but by carefully listening to their stories to better understand their perspectives.

Story puts the POW in power
By Park Howell
Storytelling in Business is the ideal guide to help remind executives and leaders how to engage employees, shareholders, stakeholders and customers through the bewitchery of story. Its current case studies demonstrate how major companies like FedEx, Schering-Plough, Chevron and others use the power of authentic, purpose-told stories to captivate internal and external audiences and move mountains. It's the best primer for business storytelling I've seen in some time.

African Constitutionalism and the Role of Islam (Pennsylvania Studies in Human Rights), by Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na'im

Constitutionalism is steadily becoming the prevalent form of governance in Africa. But how does constitutionalism deal with the lingering effects of colonialism? And how does constitutional law deal with Islamic principles in the region? African Constitutionalism and the Role of Islam seeks to answer these questions. Constitutional governance has not been, nor will be, easily achieved, Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na'im argues. But setbacks and difficulties are to be expected in the process of adaptation and indigenization of an essentially alien concept—that of of nation-state—and its role in large-scale political and social organization.

An-Na'im discusses the problems of implementing constitutionalized forms of government specific to Africa, from definitional to conceptual and practical issues. The role of Islam in these endeavors is open to challenge and reformulation, and should not be taken for granted or assumed to be necessarily negative or positive, An-Na'im asserts, and he emphasizes the role of the agency of Muslims in the process of adapting constitutionalism to the values and practices of their own societies. By examining the incremental successes that some African nations have already achieved and An-Na'im reveals the contingent role that Islam has to play in this process. Ultimately, these issues will determine the long-term sustainability of constitutionalism in Africa.

Preface

I began working on this book in 1995 under a grant from the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS), but soon had to set it aside for when I became the coordinator of a major study of the legal protection under the constitutions of sixteen African countries. That project was organized by the International Center for the Legal Protection of Human Rights (Interights) and Inter-Africa Network for Human Rights and Development (Afronet). All those studies were done by African researchers working on their own respective countries according to the same terms of reference and uniform format. Ten of those country studies were in due course published in Human Rights under African Constitutions: Realizing the Promise for Ourselves (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2003). I am pleased to acknowledge the initial grant of the ACLS, and the professional support of Interights and Afronet, but my special appreciation is for the rigorous scholarship and helpful insights of the researchers in that project. That project not only confirmed and helped define the concept of African constitutionalism that I am trying to further develop in this book but also enabled me to test and revise some of my assumptions and initial thinking on the subject. This background is therefore important to note from the beginning because of it relates to the genesis and objectives of this book.

I was already working on the cultural legitimacy of human rights and related ideas, with particular reference to Islamic and African societies, when I participated in a global comparative study of constitutionalism organized by the ACLS in 1988-89. Working on the Africa regional "institute" for that project contributed to shaping my understanding of issues of constitutionalism in a pan-African perspective, reaffirmed my commitment to this principle and my belief in the possibilities of its incremental success throughout the continent. The idea of writing a book about constitutionalism in Africa emerged at the end of that ACLS project.

However, it was my subsequent participation in the Interights/Afronet project that confirmed and helped me develop the proactive approach I am attempting to present in this book to emphasize the incremental success of constitutionalism in Africa. Those studies also provided me with a wealth of detailed information on the practical working of constitutional principles in a good cross-section of African countries. In particular, that experience affirmed my belief in the urgent need for socially engaged scholarship without sacrificing strong scholarship. The implementation of that project made it clear to me that it is unacceptable for an African scholar to devote her or his whole attention detached academic analysis without attempting to respond to the urgent needs and untold suffering of Africans throughout the continent. On the other hand, activist involvement with such issues raises risk of bias and lack of scholarly rigor. While appreciating and attempting to guard against this risk, I see no alternative to positively responding to the need for social engagement of the issues facing African societies.

From this perspective, I am seeking to promote constitutional governance in African societies, by developing ways of enhancing and consolidating the basis of the incremental success of constitutionalism, with due consideration of the difficulties and setbacks experienced by African societies in this regard. Moreover, I am suggesting that such difficulties and setbacks are to be expected as an integral part of the process of adaptation and indigenization of an essentially alien concept of the "nation state" and its role in large scale political and social organization. As discussed later in this book, however, the assumption of 'nation' in the nation state concept can be very problematic in the postcolonial African context.

But my belief in the desirability and possibility of sustainable constitutionalism is based on a certain understanding of the concept, and a proactive approach to the conditions and processes of realizing it in the African context. This understanding and proactive approach should be seen as part of a universal project of constitutionalism that is to be conceived and pursued through global collaborations, but with due regard to the historical and current realities of international economic and political power relations.

While a positive or negative outcome of these processes should neither be expected to automatically materialize, nor assumed to be inevitable or permanent. Since adaptation and indigenization necessarily indicate that there are difficulties to be overcome, the success of these processes can only be incremental, through practical experience over time. This desired objective cannot be realized without critical analysis of experiences so far, and pragmatic development and implementation of the necessary strategies in the future. African scholars have an important role to play in this regard, in addition to their personal engagement in political struggles within their respective countries. But scholars cannot play this role without meticulous verification of the factual basis of rigorous analysis. Otherwise, they would be doing a serious disservice to their societies if they compromise on the scholarly quality of their work. In other words, there is no conflict between rigorous scholarship and advocacy for social and political change because maintaining the highest standards of scholarly quality is the prerequisite condition for the role of socially engaged scholars.

The general progression of the analysis I am presenting in this book can be summarized as follows. The first chapter is devoted to a preliminary discussion of the problem of defining and implementing constitutionalism in general, and of the circumstances and assumptions associated with its introduction in the late colonial and early post-colonial Africa. But for the concept to survive and thrive over time it has to be adapted and sustained through an indigenous rationale and dynamics of what might be called the dialectic of constitutionalism in Africa and African constitutionalism. This dialectic refers to the processes of progression from constitutionalism as an abstract concept or set of principles to the adaptation and indigenization of the concept or principles to local conditions and context. As I will emphasize later in this book, however, 'progression' includes 'regression.'

Conceptual and practical issues associated with this process, as it is unfolding and evolving in the actual experiences of African countries, are discussed in the second chapter. In other words, I take the practical experience of African countries as being the primary source as well as practical method of adaptation and indigenization, but would emphasize the need for conceptual clarity and political leadership in drawing lessons and formulating and implementing strategies for future action. To this end, I will examine in the third chapter the recent experience of some African countries along what I call a continuum of incremental success, including a variety and degrees of failure and setback. Chapters 4 and 5 are devoted to closer analysis of what I call the contingent role of Islam, as an application and illustration of the general thesis of the book as a whole. In conclusion, the last chapter offers some comparative reflections and assessment of the prospects of sustainable constitutionalism.

To avoid the risks of distortion or oversimplification, I will not attempt to summarize the content of these chapters. Instead, I wish to note some of the tensions that seem to be inherent to the sort of argument I am trying to make. There is first an underlying tension in the study of and policy reflection on such concepts as "constitutionalism" or "democracy," namely, how to apply principles which have received their present global articulation and development from the experiences of Western societies to African societies. In my view, such concepts can be accepted as viable philosophical, political, and analytic categories for evaluating the state of politics, society, culture, and so forth, in African societies, provided they are open to contestation and reconceptualization from the perspective of those societies. This can be done by drawing on indigenous and precolonial African traditions of political, social, and cultural thought and practice, as well as political and intellectual traditions of anticolonial dissent and protest, in addition to concepts from European or Western social thought and disciplinary traditions, as relativized and reconceptualized in local context.

The deeply contextual approach to the incremental success of constitutionalism in present African countries that I am proposing in this book entails a tension between the requirement of assessing each experience on its own terms, and the need to have some verifiable standards for assessing the relative degree of success that is supposed to have been realized in any country at a given point in time. The way to mediate this tension is to identify elements of an emerging global consensus on some critical features of constitutionalism governance, and then apply them to assess the "performance" of each country in its own context. Critical assessment of the constitutional record of any African country is necessary and prerequisite for developing and implementing strategies for the promotion and consolidation of these principles in those countries. The question is how to do this in a deeply contextual manner, instead of applying a preconceived, linear approach to the assessment of success or failure, without due regard to the particular history and specific context of each society.

Another tension this book seeks to mediate relates to the paradoxical nature of the African postcolonial state, which is supposed to be sovereign from a legal point of view, though it is in fact incapable of exercising the full powers and responsibilities of sovereignty in practice. The question here is how to work with this reality while attempting to change it in the "real world" of power politics, collapsing economies and corruption at home, and persistent Western neocolonial hegemony abroad. Yet, the only way forward is through the practice of constitutionalism in order to empower civil society actors hold governments legally and politically accountable to their own populations. The more effective this process is at home, the sooner will neocolonial international relations diminish over time. The main question for this book is how to make that happen in a sustainable manner throughout the continent. While I attempt to do that in broad theoretical terms in the first three chapters, it is the closer examination of the case of Islamic societies that I hope will clarify and illustrate the argument I am making for wider application.

My concern with the role of Islam in Islamic African societies raises another tension, namely, the conflict between traditional understandings of Shari'a (the normative system of Islam) and modern principles of constitutionalism. The notion of the contingency of the role of Islam refers to a theoretical and political "space" within which the mediation of this tension can occur through a re-interpretation of Islamic to reformulate relevant principles of Shari'ah. The relationship between Islam and constitutionalism in Africa should be understood within the framework of the dialectic of Islam in Africa and African Islam, on the one hand, and the broader context of culture, religion and politics, on the other. Muslims are not only Muslims, nor do they behave all of the time as such, though Islam fundamental to their cultural identity, social institutions and daily behavior. In particular, perhaps traditional forms of Africanized Islam might provide better prospects for reconciliation between the Islamic cultural identity of African Muslims, on the one hand, and the requirements of their daily lives in multi-cultural, multi-religious states, on the other. The main idea here is that Africanized Islam, with its strong Sufi (Mystic) roots and practices, was inclusive and tolerant of diversity within Muslim communities and in their relationships with non-Muslims communities. But the regional and global nature of the cross-cultural and political interaction adds to the contingency of the role of Islam in relation to constitutionalism by bringing into Islamic African societies more 'fundamentalist' interpretations Shari'a that are more exclusive and intolerant of diversity. This approach is hopefully clarified and illustrated by the comparative analysis of the contingent role of Islam in Sudan, Nigeria and Senegal in chapters 4 and 5.

Finally, I am also concerned about the current global context of a very destructive trend in the foreign policy of the United States in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. This primarily unilateral and aggressively militaristic response to the real and serious threat of terrorism, which has resulted in the illegal and counter-productive invasion and occupation of Iraq in March 2003.004, may have had two negative consequences for the objectives of this book. This global environment poses a most serious challenges some of the most fundamental principles of international legality, has seriously undermined the credibility of notions of universal standards of human rights and constitutionalism everywhere, especially among Islamic societies. This negative implication is compounded by the manner in which the United States is seeking to influence the domestic policies of African and Islamic governments that are vulnerable to American economic, political and security pressure to adopt oppressive legislation and policies. Moreover, the combined effect of these negative developments have created or enhance a preexisting "siege mentality," especially among Islamic societies, which makes them more conservative and defensive about their religious and cultural identity. This would seem to indicate that these societies are now less likely to engage in internal transformation in favor of constitutional governance and the protection of human rights than they used to be a few years ago. The challenge is therefore how to maintain a positive and forward looking perspective on constitutionalism for Islamic societies in general, and those among them who are also African for the purposes of this book.

To conclude this brief Preface, I realize many tensions within my thesis and analysis are not resolved, indeed may not be possible to resolve through any theoretical discussion, however developed or elaborate it may be. I am therefore painfully aware of the limitations of the scope of this book, and of the approach I am proposing to the promotion and consolidation of constitutionalism in African countries. Yet, I do believe that this thesis and analysis can make a useful contribution to the field on which others can build.

Book Recognizes Constitutional Successes in Africa
By Center for the Study of Law and Religion at Emory University
A new book by Emory Law Professor Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na`im explores why African countries are highly skeptical of external political structures--especially those that emerge from the West--being imposed upon their populations.

The skepticism is due in part to the lingering legacy of European colonialization, and resistance is compounded in Islamic African countries, says An-Na`im in African Constitutionalism and the Role of Islam (University of Pennsylvania Press), the newest volume to emerge from the Center for the Study of Law and Religion (CSLR).

"The current global environment has enhanced a preexisting `siege' mentality which makes them more conservative and defensive about their religious and cultural identity, and less likely to engage in internal transformation than they were a few years ago," said An-Na`im, Charles Howard Candler Professor of Law and a CSLR senior fellow.

A Muslim who was born and raised in Northern Sudan, An-Na`im believes wholeheartedly that constitutionalism is the most desirable political path for African countries, despite the obstacles, as long as it is adapted to draw on pre-colonial traditions and the values and practices of local African societies in all their diversity.

"It has become clear to me that it is unacceptable for an African scholar to devote her or his whole attention to detached academic analysis," he said in the book's introduction, "without attempting to respond to the urgent needs and untold suffering of Africans throughout the continent."

By observing the "incremental successes" of a cross-section of African countries, An-Na`im has gathered information about how to best achieve constitutional governance--in which the power of the state is limited by law and balanced with individual rights--while taking into consideration the complicated relationship among religion, state, and society.

Adapting a form of government based on an essentially alien concept--the nation-state--is not easy, he says, especially when previous governance was "premised on notions of the superiority of European civilizations, and sought to render African subjects, not citizens, with minimal participation in political power--a form of `colonial constitutionalism.' "

What wins An-Na`im over seems to be the core aspects of constitutionalism: the enumeration of the responsibilities and accountability of government; the separation of powers; the respect for collective as well as individual rights. "Put in elemental terms," he said, "it is a framework for the mediation of certain unavoidable conflicts in the political, economic, and social fabric of every human society."

The role of religion in Islamic African societies raises additional tensions, he says--namely, how traditional understandings of Shari`a (Islamic religious law and norms) will be recognized within a constitutional government.

"The fundamental concern is how to ensure the institutional separation of Shari'a and the state, despite the organic and unavoidable connection between Islam and politics," he said. "The first part of this proposition sounds like `secularism' as is commonly understood today, but the second part indicates the opposite. This is a permanent paradox that must be addressed through constant and deeply contextual negotiation, rather than the subject of a fixed formula--whether a claim of total separation or of total fusion of religion and the state."

An-Na`im believes that Africanized Islam might provide better prospects for reconciliation between the Islamic cultural identity of African Muslims and the requirements of their daily lives in multicultural, multireligious states. "With its strong Sufi (mystic) roots and practices," he says, "it has traditionally been inclusive and tolerant of diversity within Muslim communities and in their relationships with non-Muslim communities."

Despite the challenges, An-Na`im says, several African countries are finding success with constitutional governance, "each on its own terms." An organic relationship among Islam, politics and social interaction, he says, can only be mediated through practice over time.

"The vision reflected in any constitution is idealistic, and there will necessarily be some gap between the defining ideals and the mechanisms for the actual operations of government," he says. "The lasting value of such ideals rests in the synergy between the ideal and its practice."

From the Author
SAVING ALLEGHENY GREEN was a true labor of love. The heroine is a registered nurse (like me) and lives on the banks of the Brazos river (live me). I wrote the book several years ago before Chick-Lit was cool and while every publisher I sent it to loved the book they didn't know how to market it. Then chick-lit happened and I submitted the book to my editor at Harlequin. She loved it so much she called me on a Saturday to tell me Harlequin wanted to buy it for Signature Spotlit. See, there are such things as happy endings.

A winner
By Cryna Palmiere
This is another great book by Lori Wilde. Allegheny Green, is a take charge kind of woman, who spends all her time taking care of her zany family. When something goes amok it is Allegheny who must take care of things, putting her own life and dreams on hold. When her sister shoots her boyfriend in the foot, after finding he is married, things start to really spiral out of control. Enter the local sheriff, Sam Conahegg, and the sexual tension between the two is evident. When Allegheny gets involved in the darker side of life there is only Sam to protect her. This story has a little bit of everything - murder, drugs, crazy relatives, mahem, and the underlying fact that maybe dreams can come true. This is a book that will keep your interest and have you reading until you can find out the solution to the mystery, which is shocking. For a story that has a something for everyone, I feel that Lori has once again given us a winner.

Saving Allegheny...a Novel to Savor
By GoodwinsGal
Lori Wilde is fast becoming one of my favorite authors, and one of the few that I actually rush out to the bookstore to find when I hear they have a new novel.

Not only are her novels fun -- combining all the elements I enjoy in a story like romance, adventure, humor, a light mystery, quirky characters and lots of heat and sexual tension! -- she has a really great style and voice so reading her books is a pleasure.

What surprised me the most about Saving Allegheny was that it was written in first person. I know someone commented in the reviews below that first person doesn't work well for this genre, but I have to disagree...which surprises me because I normally loathe first person novels. Loathe them. In fact, I've been known to open a book in the store, see the "I" voice going on in the story and immediately put it back on the shelf and move on. I find first person perspective in books annoying, repetitive, and usually so distracting it takes me out of the story and makes me aware of the actual writing. Never a good thing.

But with Saving Allegheny I didn't notice anything at all. I was pulled into the story and involved in the character's lives, and the next thing I knew, I was done with the book.

Buyers should note that, while Saving Allegheny is a romance, it's more along the lines of a chick lit book, so the focus is more on the heroine and her life while the romance between Allegheny and the local sheriff, Sam Conahegg, is what prompts Allegheny to start making changes in her life. And she definitely needs to start making changes.

Her life is overrun and controlled by her sense of responsibility to her family and always putting their needs above her own. For anyone who has ever been in this position with loved ones, it's a hard dance to break (even scary) and Wilde handles the issue well. I sympathized with Allegheny as she was torn between what she wants in her life (love, romance, Sam) and her duty, honor and loyalty to her family.

Allegheny is a smart woman, something I always look for in a story, and Sam is a terrific counterpoint to her character. He's the "been there/done that" type who has been in Allegheny's shoes and knows exactly what she has to face, accept and change before their relationship can move forward.

Saving Allegheny is more than "just a romance". The mystery is well built, the relationship issues timely, the character studies on target, and yet Lori Wilde handles it all with her normal flare for fun, adventure, and humor, making you laugh even in the heavier parts of the story.

I was really surprised by the other review calling this book "crass" and "crude" and lacking "morals" because, if anything, I felt a strong connection with her main characters and the fine line they were trying to walk between doing what was expected of them and what others wanted and what they longed for in their life.

This was an unexpected gem in Lori Wilde's long list of works and I'm eagerly anticipating her next!

Ally Green, Heroine Extraordinare! (B Grade)
By Katie Babs
Lori Wilde has written a nice, light mystery romance with a heroine who is so caring to the point she doesn't think for herself. You feel for Ally as she goes through constant drama with her kooky aunt and mother as well as a younger sister who involves herself with abusive, drug addicted jerks. Ally is the only woman in this family with her head on straight.
But then one night little sister shoots her loser boyfriend in the foot. But things aren't that bad as the lust of Ally's dreams, Sheriff Conahegg is on the case. From that moment on Ally's life becomes even crazier with murder, out of control neighbors and the man she wants who keeps giving her mixed signals.
Ally has a back bone but is afraid to go after the best things in life, which means our hunky sheriff. Will Ally let loose, or will her sister and family bring her down?
Oh, and Ally finds herself becoming an amateur sleuth when her sister maybe up for murder charges.
Some may think this is more a popcorn read, but overall and enjoyable way to spend a few hours. The romance is sweet and Ally's internal thoughts are cute.

The Book of Matt: Hidden Truths About the Murder of Matthew Shepard, by Stephen Jimenez

What role did crystal meth and other previously underreported factors play in the brutal murder of gay college student Matthew Shepard? The Book of Matt is a page-turning cautionary tale that humanizes and de-mythologizes Matthew while following the evidence where it leads, without regard to the politics that have long attended this American tragedy.

Late on the night of October 6, 1998, twenty-one-year-old Matthew Shepard left a bar in Laramie, Wyoming with two alleged “strangers,” Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson. Eighteen hours later, Matthew was found tied to a log fence on the outskirts of town, unconscious and barely alive. He had been pistol-whipped so severely that the mountain biker who discovered his battered frame mistook him for a Halloween scarecrow. Overnight, a politically expedient myth took the place of important facts. By the time Matthew died a few days later, his name was synonymous with anti-gay hate.

Stephen Jimenez went to Laramie to research the story of Matthew Shepard’s murder in 2000, after the two men convicted of killing him had gone to prison, and after the national media had moved on. His aim was to write a screenplay on what he, and the rest of the nation, believed to be an open-and-shut case of bigoted violence. As a gay man, he felt an added moral imperative to tell Matthew’s story. But what Jimenez eventually found in Wyoming was a tangled web of secrets. His exhaustive investigation also plunged him deep into the deadly underworld of drug trafficking. Over the course of a thirteen-year investigation, Jimenez traveled to twenty states and Washington DC, and interviewed more than a hundred named sources.

The Book of Matt is sure to stir passions and inspire dialogue as it re-frames this misconstrued crime and its cast of characters, proving irrefutably that Matthew Shepard was not killed for being gay but for reasons far more complicated — and daunting.

Amazon.com Review
Guest Review of The Book of Matt: Hidden Truths About the Murder of Matthew Shepard

By Kenneth S. Stern

Stephen Jimenez’s The Book of Matt: Hidden Truths About the Murder of Matthew Shepard is a compelling story of a journalist’s determination to ascertain why Matthew Shepard -- a gay University of Wyoming student -- was viciously killed in 1998. The story that had been told in the media, and to some extent in the courtroom, was that Shepard had made a pass at two strangers in a bar, who became outraged, took Shepard to a remote spot, bashed his head in, and left him affixed to a fence, to die. It was the anti-gay hate crime of the century, and while the rationale for including anti-gay attacks under hate crime law was clearly established long before the Shepard murder, his case became a symbol and rallying point for such legislation.

Jimenez, however, uncovered another story, one that was to some extent unappreciated at the time of the crime, but was also intentionally hidden for a variety of motivations. Among those motivations were fear, courtroom strategy, and the desire of media, activists, and others to believe the powerful story of a gay man being brutally killed for no other reason than he made an unwelcome pass at a man he happened to meet in a bar.

Shepard and his killer, Aaron McKinney, were not strangers after all. In fact Aaron McKinney was a bisexual, who had had sex with Shepard. And both were dealers of methamphetamine.

Jimenez makes a strong case that the unappreciated lesson of the Shepard murder is one about the dangers of methamphetamine. This book is a well-constructed narrative of a 13-year investigative quest by a talented author whose passion for uncovering the true story rings clear. Highly recommended

Kenneth S. Stern is the author of Loud Hawk: The United States Versus the American Indian Movement and A Force Upon the Plain: The American Militia Movement and the Politics of Hate

Review
NATIONAL TRUE CRIME BESTSELLER

"A gripping read." — People magazine

"Be prepared to encounter a radically revised version of the life and death of Matthew Shepard . . . This riveting true crime narrative will appeal to readers of books such as Norman Mailer's The Executioner's Song." — Library Journal (★ Starred Review)

"The extensive interviews and dogged investigative research conducted by Jimenez make The Book of Matt a model for journalistic inquiry. . . . Jimenez is revealing today what we should have read fifteen years ago. In the meantime, the media continues to report on some anti-gay hate crimes while completely ignoring others, and thousands go completely unreported out of fear of retaliation. Perhaps the main takeaway from The Book of Matt is that we should challenge ourselves to demand the truth from our media at all times, even if it costs us a tidy narrative." — Rachel Wexelbaum in Lambda Literary Review

"This is an amazing book! A painful story about a horrific event that left one man dead and many lives in pieces. . . It documents the original failure of the media, the community and the criminal justice system to find the real truth. . . . Steve Jimenez has done a remarkable job of removing himself from the story to tell it with pure, heart wrenching honesty and integrity. I know, I caught Russell Henderson the night of the murder. I recovered the gun and washed blood from my hands. . . . The only concern I have from so much more information coming out is it could possibly take away from the exceptional outcomes that have been championed in the name of Matthew Shepherd. I believe a major reason this case so quickly expanded to grab the national consciousness on the inconsistent treatment of our citizens was due to the vacuum that existed there. It is both honorable and appropriate to set the facts in proper order so the truth be known. Can we also acknowledge that vacuum and speak to the need to remedy the situation as well? I would like to believe if we you chose to, we could stop a pendulum mid swing." —  Flint Waters, a former Laramie police officer and drug enforcement agent for the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation

"Mr. Jimenez's book is most useful in illuminating the power of the media to shape the popular conception of an event. It shows how a desire for Manichaean morality tales can lead us to oversimplify the human experience. . . . Mr. Jimenez's findings cast doubt on what he calls the Shepard story's function as latter-day 'passion play and folktale.'" — The Wall Street Journal

"Fifteen years ago . . . Aaron McKinney swung his .357 Magnum for the final time like a baseball bat into the skull of Matthew Shepard. Shepard was tied low to a post, arms behind his back, in a prairie fringe of Laramie, Wyoming. . . . The murder was so vicious, the aftermath so sensational, that the story first told to explain it became gospel before anyone could measure it against reality. That story was born, in part, of shock and grief and the fact that gay men like Shepard have been violently preyed upon by heterosexuals. It was also born of straight culture and secrets. . . . Now comes Stephen Jimenez with The Book of Matt, and this most detailed effort to rescue the protagonists from caricature is, with a few exceptions, being coolly ignored or pilloried for 'blaming the victim.' . . .  Jimenez does not polemicize or tread deeply into the psyches of the main figures. Rather, he explores the drug-fueled world they inhabited, and evokes its thick air of violence. . . . Jimenez spent thirteen years to tell his story. . . In this story, Shepard and McKinney were neither lamb nor wolf; they were human commodities, working for rival drug circles to support their habits, and occasionally forced to pay their debts in sex. The Matthew Shepard Foundation, the whole machinery that benefited from the story of a desexualized Bad Karma Kid but otherwise happy-in-his-skin Matthew, that used his horrid death as a banner for hate crime laws, have slammed the book. Kinder reviewers have said Jimenez has made the case less political. On the contrary. What impelled McKinney to loathe his desires, and Shepard relentlessly, dangerously to test himself, and Henderson to follow orders? Violence lacerated these young men long before the murder, and it will not be diminished or resisted by myths and vengeful laws." — JoAnn Wypijewski in The Nation

"Jimenez is careful to point out that his goal is to understand Shepard as a complex human being and make the fullest possible sense of his murder, not to suggest in any way that he deserved his horrific fate. . . . Jimenez’s problem is that he has trodden on hallowed ground. America, as John Ford cannily observed in his western The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, is a country that likes to build up its heroes and villains and rarely appreciates having the record corrected to restore them to the stature of ordinary, fallible human beings. By now, Shepard’s story has been elevated close to legend, and Shepard himself to a near-messianic figure who suffered for the ultimate benefit of the rest of us. . . . Many of Jimenez’s central contentions are shared by the prosecutor in the case, Cal Rerucha, and by police officers who investigated the murder." —  The Guardian

“Jimenez takes pains to note throughout the book that no matter what led up to the murder, the event was still horrific. And the end result of his retelling is not to demonize Matthew Shepard—Jimenez is himself gay—but to point out that he was human.” — Yasmin Nair, In These Times

"I will never view the death of Matthew Shepard in the same way. After finishing The Book of Matt: Hidden Truths about the Murder of Matthew Shepard . . . it is no longer possible to believe the myth that has grown up around the death of this young man in Laramie 15 years ago." — Wyoming Tribune Eagle

"It’s been 15 years to the month since a dying Matthew Shepard was found tied to a fencepost outside Laramie, Wyoming. The narrative that quickly emerged — which Stephen Jimenez spends 360 pages debunking in The Book of Matt — was that Shepard had told two strangers he was gay, provoking the savage attack. . . . Jimenez acknowledges that the national revulsion to Shepard’s murder actually helped the gay community, creating more awareness, legal protections, and a trend toward true equality. But The Book of Matt finds nothing positive in the media’s handling of that case." — Seattle Weekly

"There are numerous hagiographies on the Matthew Shepard murder. [Fifteen] years after Shepard's murder, they're being challenged. Are we ready for the tale investigative journalist Stephen Jimenez, himself gay, spins? . . .Jimenez's message in The Book of Matt: Hidden Truths About the Murder of Matthew Shepard, upends a canonized narrative we all have grown familiarly comfortable with. . . .And now with Jimenez's incontrovertible evidence that Shepard's murderers were not strangers — one is a bisexual crystal meth addict who not only knew Matthew, but partied, bought drugs from and had sex with Matthew. With this 'new' information a more textured but troubling truth emerges. This truth shatters a revered icon for LGBT rights, one deliberately chosen because of race, gender and economic background. . . . The anointing of Matthew Shepard as an iconic image for LGBT rights not only concealed from the American public the real person but also it hid the other varied faces of hate crimes in the 1990's. . . . In reading Jimenez's book we shockingly learn that Matthew Shepard, Gay Icon story is a fictive narrative. . . . The cultural currency of the Shepard narrative's shelf life, might now after nearly two decades be flickering out, or it's now of no use to its framers and the community it was intended to serve. . . . I read Jimenez's The Book of Matt as a cautionary tale of how the needs of a community trumped the truth of a story." — Rev. Irene Monroe, Out in New Jersey

"In the tradition of In Cold Blood and The Executioner's Song, this is a work of literary true crime that reaches far beyond the case itself to probe deep and troubling recesses of the American psyche." — Hampton Sides, bestselling author of Hellhound on His Trail

“The Book of Matt provides us for the first time with the real story of an American tragedy.” —Kevin Baker, author of Strivers Row

"No one should be afraid of the truth. Least of all gay people... Shouldn’t we understand better why and how?" — Journalist Andrew Sullivan

"An award-winning journalist uncovers the suppressed story behind the death of Matthew Shepard. . . . As Jimenez deconstructs an event that has since passed into the realm of mythology, he humanizes it. The result is a book that is fearless, frank and compelling. Investigative journalism at its relentless and compassionate best." — Kirkus Reviews

“Jimenez does a masterful job of unspooling this haunted narrative like a puzzle, giving you seemingly disparate pieces that take a while to form a larger picture... Anyone interested in the Matthew Shepard case needs to read this book.” – Jeff Walsh, Oasis Magazine, an online publication for LGBT youth

"What if nearly everything you thought you knew about Matthew Shepard’s murder was wrong? What if our most fiercely held convictions about the circumstances of that fatal night of October 6, 1998, have obscured other, more critical, aspects of the case? . . . None of this is idle speculation; it’s the fruit of years of dogged investigation by journalist Stephen Jimenez, himself gay. In the course of his reporting, Jimenez interviewed over 100 subjects, including friends of Shepard and of his convicted killers, Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson, as well as the killers themselves. . . . In the process, he amassed enough anecdotal evidence to build a persuasive case that Shepard’s sexuality was, if not incidental, certainly less central than popular consensus has lead us to believe." — Aaron Hicklin, Editor-in-Chief of Out magazine, in The Advocate

"What’s truly remarkable about this book is not that, like many before it, it exposes the truth behind a useful myth. It is the reaction of the gay establishment to these difficult truths. The Book Of Matt insists on the horrifying nature of the crime; it had no pre-existing agenda; it’s written by an award-winning reporter who is also a gay man. (The Wyoming Historical Society also gave it an award.) What it does is expose a real problem in the gay male world – especially at the time of the murder: the nexus of sex and meth that destroyed and still destroys so many lives." — Andrew Sullivan, The Daily Dish

"Stephen Jimenez makes a compelling case that this horrific murder was not a hate crime at all. . . . No doubt Jimenez will face criticism for his powerful book. Why did he have to dig around and stir things up? Won’t people who are opposed to equal rights for LGBT people use his exposé for their reactionary purposes? How do these revelations harm those who built programs teaching tolerance based on the Shepard murder? How will Shepard’s family feel? . . . The movement for equality for gay people is important, not because of what happened to Matthew Shepard on an October night 15 years ago, but because no one should be less valued as a human being because of who they are or who they love. . . . When combating hatred and bigotry, the truth is always important." — The Jewish Daily Forward

"This is not a left-wing or a right-wing thing. It is not a gay or straight thing, it is not a religious versus atheist thing. It’s a human thing. . . . I admire Stephen Jimenez so much for the courage it took to stick with this story for 13 years, and to report facts that apparently destroy the narrative that he expected to find when he first went to Wyoming to look into the Shepard case. There will be a number of people who will hate him for what he’s done, especially because he himself is a gay journalist. May we all find the courage to follow the truth and to deal with it, no matter where it leads. I aspire to be as brave in my work as Jimenez has been in his. All of us should learn a lesson from his book. It is important to stand up for what we believe is right. But it is more important for us to stand up for the truth.." — Rod Dreher, author of The Little Way of Ruth Leming, in The American Conservative

"I am persuaded by The Book of Matt that we will learn more that is more valuable if we demand the facts, and not a case that is cut to fit a particular agenda... We need a Steve Jimenez to take up the [Trayvon Martin case, to which the book is compared] and devote to it the energy and attention that he devoted to the Shepard murder, to enrich us with the truth." — Marci A. Hamilton, Justia

"The popular image of this event as one where two drug-using homophobic thugs murdered Matthew because he was gay is overly simplistic. . . Matthew Shepard’s memory is ill served by those who wish to present him as a saint and who urge us not to read this book. The narratives are contradictory; read the book and make your own mind up. What is clear is that Matthew was as complicated and flawed an individual as we all are – and that in no way invalidates his humanity, his right to life or the reaction to his murder." — The James Morgan Brown Review

Sadly poignant.
By Phillip M. Tindall
Makes you really accept that you can't trust what is common knowledge and have to judge things as individuals, if the truth doesn't matter only the narrative then good luck with that.

This whole series of "Worst Case Scenario" books are amusing and they give meaningful ways of getting out of situations. I purchased four--all for different age levels--and my grandkids loved them all. I have the Complete Worst Case Scenario Survival Book for me and I've enjoyed reading that. There are real things that happen to real people with a humorous twist that gives you ideas of how to get out of a fix. Fun reading.
