Nathalie's Food Processor Biscuit Recipe a Winner!

The book is beautiful, and it should have been bound into 2 thinner books. Very heavy to handle, especially for us mature ladies with maybe a bit of arthritis in our hands. However, the first recipe I tried was this morning, and I made a batch of her food processor biscuits, following it to the letter. I have not made biscuits in years, and have never tried food processor recipes for biscuits. They came out perfect--light, fluffy, tall and delicious. Will be trying more of the recipes. Like her style of discussion about each category.

Search For Wisdom

In the span of approximately 400 years well before the birth of Christ, a people - the Greeks - may well have invented what is best in mankind, indeed what defines mankind, namely the "Search For Wisdom". In a book appropriately titled "The Greek Search For Wisdom", the author Michael Kellogg analyzes the works of 10 authors whose contributions to poetry (Homer's Iliad), tragedy (Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides), history (Herodotus, Thucydides), comedy (Aristophanes), and philosophy (Plato, Aristotle) not only created a new understanding of what it means to be a human facing random and uncontrollable forces of good or ill, but also what being human required to surmount chaos, suffering and violence and to achieve the wisdom necessary for an ordered society and self-awareness.
As Kellogg shows, Homer's Iliad commingles a pantheon of gods, whose attributes represent many of the worst flaws in man and whose appetite for stoking those flaws in the mortals they manipulate is insatiable, particularly for the flawed Achilles and Hector who are pressed by the gods to seek immortal glory in the memories of their countrymen. The epic poet then gives way to tragedians whose protagonists suffer fatal flaws of overreaching, but also are able to stand outside themselves (and the communal chorus that observes them) and achieve self-awareness - as forebears of Hamlet and Falstaff. Likewise, the invention of comedy extends the process of man's self-awareness and individuation.
In the search for wisdom, as Kellogg reminds us, the Greeks also created the first narrative accounts of history. The process of recording the past for the purpose of understanding, if not shaping, the future was another step toward self-awareness.
Finally, Kellogg focuses on the Western World's first and greatest philosophers - Plato and Aristotle. Theirs was a search for universal principles as well as the art of testing and applying those principles to social norms, self governance, the first democracy, rhetoric and science. No small feat for the ancients.
The achievement of this book is not simply its lively and successful dramatization of the search for wisdom, nor its insightful revelations of the most fundamental features of man's uniqueness; rather it is the story of human nature, based upon heroic individuals of extraordinary talent, which makes this book a must read.

This is a well written, thoughtful, and informative review of our inheritance from Ancient Greeks. Appropriate for those new to classical tradition and those seeking new insights. It is a good addition to the library of anyone wanting to expand their secondary sources.

A must read for everybody

This is an entertaining book that does a superb job of analyzing the greatest, Greek thinkers. It would not be an overemphasis to say that Western civilization is an extension of Greek culture, and every chapter in this book is therefore relevant to today's society. All of the problems we face today are eerily similar to the ones faced by these great, ancient thinkers, and Michael Kellogg skillfully highlights their responses and their timeless insights. This book did a superb job in guiding my own search for wisdom, and I can't help thinking that the world would be better off if every person took the time to read a book such as this. It excellently covers humanity's greatest strengths and weaknesses through the lens of tragedy, comedy, lyric poetry, history, philosophy, and democracy. As a liberal arts graduate who never had the opportunity to take a class on Greek classics, this was a great introduction and comparable to an entire college course. I highly recommend it, as it has peaked my interest for further study.

This is a fantastic book, one of the best books I have ever read!

In my experience, the trouble with books of this kind is generally that the authors simply do not know enough about the nature of reality and can't write about fundamental causes that have effects on everyday reality. This is not the case here.

The authors start with fundamental causes -- your thinking and how it effects your reality -- and work from there to show you how this effects your assertiveness which they define as a world view, as a definition you have of yourself in the world.

This is powerful!

Usually books of this type are all about effort and trying, and adjusting your behavior on the surface . . . not this book. when you know core causes, everything changes. You have tools that can really change your life.

This should be a best seller!!

I bought a copy for myself, and just reading the first few pages, instantly my approach to people and situations began to change. So I bought a copy for my sister, too, and posted on Facebook.

I highly recommend this book to everyone, not just people having major difficulties with what they perceive to be assertiveness. This book is about having clarity as to who you are in the world, what you value, and how to live a life that matches your innermost truth.

By the way, the writing is absolutely excellent, as is the book layout.

Jargon free and easy to digest self-help title that delivers

We live in `very negative times', and it is important for people to have the correct skills to manage their interactions with other people and organizations that may not have your interests at heart or necessarily care. I am not saying the world is `battlefield', however, I am sure you get the point I am trying to make.

My thoughts on the book:

This book is very user-friendly and is relatively `jargon' free, any science that there maybe is expressed in layman's terms. The book begins with defining what it is to be assertive, and what it is not. There some good real life examples, as well as a section that will test your ability to understand and putting into practice what you learned. Each section of the book is in nice manageable `chunks' that are easy to digest, the book flows well with each section complementing the last, while at the same time building up your understanding, this book is highly recommended.

Assertiveness

There have been plenty of books written about assertiveness and how to apply it to all sorts of situations but I think this is probably one of the best I've read. It is divided into two sections - the first is about win-win situations, assertive communication and an explanation of what exactly assertive behaviour and communication looks like.

Part two is about applying assertive techniques to a variety of situations both at work and in the home as well as when making purchases or having work done to your home. The whole of the book repays careful study and it will help anyone to analyse their own behaviour to see where they could be making a situation worse because they don't wholly appreciate the difference between aggression and assertiveness.

If you only read one book on assertiveness - make it this one. Putting the techniques into practice could well improve your life significantly.

Beginning in the 1950s, however, new perspectives emerged outside and within the United States that challenged this dominant thinking. Consuming Pleasures reveals how a group of writers shifted attention from condemnation to critical appreciation, critiqued cultural hierarchies and moralistic approaches, and explored the symbolic processes by which individuals and groups communicate.

Historian Daniel Horowitz traces the emergence of these new perspectives through a series of intellectual biographies. With writers and readers from the United States at the center, the story begins in Western Europe in the early 1950s and ends in the early 1970s, when American intellectuals increasingly appreciated the rich inventiveness of popular culture. Drawing on sources both familiar and newly discovered, this transnational intellectual history plays familiar works off each other in fresh ways. Among those whose work is featured are Jürgen Habermas, Roland Barthes, Umberto Eco, Walter Benjamin, C. L. R. An extraordinary interpretation of intellectuals and popular culture

This is a book of signal importance. Daniel Horowitz has, in the past, provided us with eyeopening views and refreshing interpretations of questions concerning consumption, affluence, and wonderfully insightful biographies of Betty Friedan and Vance Packard. Consuming Pleasures, however, is his masterpiece. It is a magisterial look at the ways in which intellectuals in both Europe and the United States dismissed, interpreted, and celebrated popular culture from the 1940s through almost the present. As a historian of a certain age, I often watch my colleagues turn various eras of my life into history with great trepidation. Like a veteran reading about war, my usual reaction is--they don't get it. Horowitz not only gets it, but for the first time on many issues and on the whole sweep of an era, I find myself saying, upon finishing chapter after chapter of this book--Now I get it! Superb scholarship, clear writing, and acute observation make this book a must read for anyone interested in how we have come to view our everyday lives and those who have shaped that vision.

Gr 2-4-This is a really sweet novel in verse and a good sequel to Like Pickle Juice on a Cookie (Abrams, 2011), though it works fine as a stand-alone. It is summer, and Eleanor's grandmother is sending her to Camp Wallumwahpuck. Though excited at first, she quickly finds herself homesick, as the only camp food she can stomach are the salads and rolls, and her bunk bed is near spiderwebs. Not only that, but she is stuck in the baby swimming group. Eleanor is mortified and miserable and just wants to go home. Of course, it is not long before she finds herself making friends, taking care of an adorable goat, and learning to swim. Maybe camp is not as awful as she thought. Eleanor is a likable character, and kids will relate to her unease at being far away from her family. The ending wraps up nicely, as the story is more about how she copes with a situation that is less than ideal and does not involve Eleanor having a complete change of heart. If you teach grades 2-4 this is pretty much a must for your classroom library! With short, simple sentences this text will be accessible to young readers. Written at a reading level that seems comparable to Magic Tree House books, but feels so much more sophisticated and authentic to the "kid experience."
If you've ever been to summer camp you can relate in one way or another to Eleanor. I myself have some loathsome memories of a certain summer camp in Maine. I'm sure this is a fine, fine camp. However, when you are from out of town, don't know anyone, play tennis for beans and are deathly afraid of dock spiders...well let's just say camp feels less than fine to that girl. I could be Eleanor, I felt her experience that well. At the end of the school year I had a student mentioning multiple times how much she hated summer camp because of the BUGS. I get it, I truly get it. And, I can't wait to hand this book to that girl in September!
I also made sure to buy Like Pickel Juice on a Cookie, which came out in 2011, and which I did not know about until I fell in love with this little bit of a story.

Fun and easy to relate to.

I admit I am not the biggest poetry fan and I'm always a little bit cautious when I read novels that are written in verse because it takes a talented writer to be able to pull it off. Being able to write in enough detail while still keeping a nice rhythm takes skill. Julie Sternberg pulls it off nicely in Like Bug Juice on a Burger.

Eleanor finds herself in a situation she has no idea how to handle. While her mother loved summer camp, Eleanor finds little to like and soon finds herself writing home with a plea to be picked up. But as she adjusts she realizes that there are some good things and while she isn't likely to ever love camp, she did have some fun after all.

I have to say this book brought back my own camp experiences with a vengeance both the good and the bad. Luckily, I always had people I knew around me so it wasn't as bad as Eleanor's experiences and in fact I always had a blast. I'm grateful for authors like Sternberg who can create stories and characters that it is so easy to relate to. Recommended.
