Review
This book covers key components of the IFRS regime and shows how standards are linked to financial decision making for business and government agencies, (The CA, May 2013)

From the Inside Flap
Relevant. trustworthy, comparable, timely and understandable financial and business information is the lifeblood of effective capital markets and of efficient allocation of capital across companies, industries, countries and the global financial system. It is also critical to sound decision making and operational management within individual companies and enterprises within both the private and public sectors. Thus, the quest to improve the quality, timeliness and overall usefulness of such information is an important ingredient in promoting strong and vibrant companies, sound financial systems, and to achieving economic growth and rising living standards at both the national and international levels.

In that regard, this book explains important aspects of that quest. Building upon the foundations of recent achievements relating to the growing use of IFRS and of technology in financial reporting, the authors provide insights and ideas on potential avenues for further significant advancements and the actions and resources needed to achieve them. As suggested by the title, the book provides a blueprint of changes that the authors believe are both possible and necessary to transforming corporate reporting.

As one who has devoted a significant part of my career and life to such efforts, I applaud the authors for their constructive and valuable contributions to the quest and hope that readers of this book will find it both interesting and thought provoking.--Robert H. Herz, CPA, FCA,Former Chairman, Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB)

Proving History: Bayes's Theorem and the Quest for the Historical Jesus, by Richard C. Carrier

This in-depth discussion of New Testament scholarship and the challenges of history as a whole proposes Bayes’s Theorem, which deals with probabilities under conditions of uncertainty, as a solution to the problem of establishing reliable historical criteria. The author demonstrates that valid historical methods—not only in the study of Christian origins but in any historical study—can be described by, and reduced to, the logic of Bayes’s Theorem. Conversely, he argues that any method that cannot be reduced to this theorem is invalid and should be abandoned.

Writing with thoroughness and clarity, the author explains Bayes’s Theorem in terms that are easily understandable to professional historians and laypeople alike, employing nothing more than well-known primary school math. He then explores precisely how the theorem can be applied to history and addresses numerous challenges to and criticisms of its use in testing or justifying the conclusions that historians make about the important persons and events of the past. The traditional and established methods of historians are analyzed using the theorem, as well as all the major "historicity criteria" employed in the latest quest to establish the historicity of Jesus. The author demonstrates not only the deficiencies of these approaches but also ways to rehabilitate them using Bayes’s Theorem.

Anyone with an interest in historical methods, how historical knowledge can be justified, new applications of Bayes’s Theorem, or the study of the historical Jesus will find this book to be essential reading.

Review
"[C]arefully exposes what happens when sound methodology meets biblical studies. . . . Proving History is a brilliant lesson in the proper proportioning of belief to evidence. Even minimal attention to Bayesian probability theory reveals just how much of Jesus scholarship confuses ‘possibly true’ with ‘probably true.’ The only miracle Richard Carrier has left to explain is why so few appreciate that extraordinary claims require extraordinary support."
-Dr. Malcolm Murray, Author of The Atheist’s Primer

"Carrier applies his philosophical and historical training to maximum effect in outlining a case for the use of Bayes’s Theorem in evaluating biblical claims. Even biblical scholars, who usually are not mathematically inclined, may never look at the ‘historical Jesus’ the same way again."
-Dr. Hector Avalos, Professor of religious studies, Iowa State University, and author of , The End of Biblical Studies

Not for the complete novice, but a very good tool for historians and historiographers.
By J. McJakome
As a trained historian [though not practicing] I give the author and the text high marks for organizing in a more scientific way the historiographic methods that I learned in a way that was almost more art than science. This particular work is very heavy on formulae, which would make it a bit difficult for the casual reader. The formulae are part of the Bayes Theorem which is thoroughly explained with both formulae and textual explanation. The difficult parts can be read around, especially if the reader has some grounding in historiography, critical thinking, and possibly in civics, anthropology and sociology.
The reason why these would be helpful is that the core of the discussion is in how to correctly assess or evaluate evidence and understand it in context. For lovers of history, it is necessary to have some experience weighing different interpretations of historical events. A keeper.

The formulas are quite challenging for the non-mathematician but the underlying logic is spot on and easily grasped by the non-mathematician.

Brilliant Book but Not For Everyone
By Book Fanatic
This is an amazing book by Richard Carrier. It is important to note that this book is not a book on whether or not Jesus was a historical person. Dr. Carrier is writing a second book to follow up this one called "On the Historicity of Jesus Christ" that will address that question. He does touch on the subject somewhat in this book, but the purpose of this book is to lay the theoretical groundwork for the next volume.

The present volume argues, and argues quite persuasively that historians should employ Bayes's Theorem in their work and of course that includes work on the historical Jesus. Regardless of what you think about that subject, if you are a thinking person, I think you should read this book. If you care about how we know what we know and how likely your beliefs are to be correct you should read this book. In that regard it is excellent. It does have a fairly narrow focus but that focus is on something that has incredibly wide application.

I'm just a lay person interested in science, history, and philosophy among other things. I'm not a professor or specialist in any relevant fields. I found this book an incredibly helpful guide to rigorous thought. This book is definitely not for everyone. Sometimes the author talks too much, but the points are valid and you just need to work through them. This is not light reading, although it is written in a way to be accessible to intelligent readers. You must be willing to put in some work if you are not already well versed in the theory.

I can't wait for the follow up volume where Dr. Carrier actually applies all this to the subject of a historical Jesus. I've now read several of Carrier's books and seen him on some video clips. He's a very articulate man and always seems to have something brilliant to say. I admit that I'm a fan.

Highly recommended to serious readers.

He's different from any man she's ever known. However, she's sworn never to risk her heart again.

Brooke Baker, sold as a mail-order bride, looks to her future with dread but firm resolve. If she survived Uncle Jackson, she can survive anyone. When Sky Jordan hears that his nefarious cousin has sent for a mail-order bride, he knows he has to prevent the marriage. No woman deserves to be left to that fate. Still, he's as surprised as anyone to find himself standing next to her before the minister.

Brooke's new husband turns out to be kinder than any man has ever been. But then the unthinkable happens and she holds the key that might save innocent lives but destroy Sky all in one fell swoop. It's a choice too unbearable to contemplate...but a choice that must be made.

A thirsty soul. Alluring hope. An oasis of love. Step into a day when outlaws ran free, the land was wild, and guns blazed at the drop of a hat.

A Pastors Review
By George McVey
As a Pastor I am very concerned by what is out there as "Christian Romance". Most of the books put out under this category are heavy on the romance but light on the Christian. I must say that is not the case with Rocky Mountain Oasis. The story, while both a western period piece and a romance, has some very deep looks into Christian life. From a character struggling with alcoholism, bitterness and revenge to a character struggling with self-condemnation and a dysfunctional view of the opposite sex. This book tackles some serious issues in Christianity with an engaging and entertaining story.

Mrs. Bonner has created characters that are real and honest in every way. I wanted to comfort Brooke and help her find Christ. I wanted to commend Skylar on his listening to the Holy Spirits Direction. I wanted to reach out to Jason and show him the errors of his way and I wanted to take the villain and put a bullet in his head. So if you want fiction that is engaging and entertaining and yet causes you to think long afterwards about spiritual concepts and try to become more Christ like then you could certainly do no better than to read Rocky Mountain Oasis. I look forward to many more wonderful novels by Lynnette Bonner. She has certainly made a life long fan out of this Preacher.

not realistic enough for me for the time period
By Justin B.
This book is ok at best. It doesn't stay true to the time period. The main character in his book is engaged to a man and decides to live with him before they are married. I think that it is completely ridiculous for that era. She would have been shunned by society, considered a hooker. Also the Grandma tells her life story about being a sinner. And living with her boyfriend and not wanting to get married until she was ready, she finally marries him when she becomes pregnant. That's modern day thinking, wouldn't be heard of in the 1900's!!!!

clean romance with strong spiritual message
By Karen B
Lynette Bonner transports you to Idaho and the wild west of the 1880's. The story follows Sky Jordan and Brooke Baker as they meet under very unconventional circumstances. Brooke has suffered terrible abuse in her past and has a difficult time learning to trust Sky. It's hard for her to believe he is different than all of the other men she's known. But Sky is a very trustworthy and his patience is tested as he continues to try to prove that to her.

The story had a few twists and turns with an unexpected murder that draws both Sky and Brooke into the tension that unfolds following the murder.

The book contains numerous scripture references as some of the characters are challenged to accept a new truth about who God is.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading the second book in the series.

The Color Revolutions, by Lincoln A. Mitchell

From late 2003 through mid-2005, a series of peaceful street protests toppled corrupt and undemocratic regimes in Georgia, Ukraine, and Kyrgyzstan and ushered in the election of new presidents in all three nations. These movements—collectively known as the Color Revolutions—were greeted in the West as democratic breakthroughs that might thoroughly reshape the political terrain of the former Soviet Union.

But as Lincoln A. Mitchell explains in The Color Revolutions, it has since become clear that these protests were as much reflections of continuity as they were moments of radical change. Not only did these movements do little to spur democratic change in other post-Soviet states, but their impact on Georgia, Ukraine, and Kyrgyzstan themselves was quite different from what was initially expected. In fact, Mitchell suggests, the Color Revolutions are best understood as phases in each nation's long post-Communist transition: significant events, to be sure, but far short of true revolutions.

The Color Revolutions explores the causes and consequences of all three Color Revolutions—the Rose Revolution in Georgia, the Orange Revolution in Ukraine, and the Tulip Revolution in Kyrgyzstan—identifying both common themes and national variations. Mitchell's analysis also addresses the role of American democracy promotion programs, the responses of nondemocratic regimes to the Color Revolutions, the impact of these events on U.S.-Russian relations, and the failed "revolutions" in Azerbaijan and Belarus in 2005 and 2006.

At a time when the Arab Spring has raised hopes for democratic development in the Middle East, Mitchell's account of the Color Revolutions serves as a valuable reminder of the dangers of confusing dramatic moments with lasting democratic breakthroughs.

Review

"The Color Revolutions represents an important contribution to our understanding of what actually happened at the time and provides extremely useful insight about what the future might—or might not—hold for other countries where the desire for democracy is great but the roots of democracy are weak."—Richard Miles, former U.S. ambassador to Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Bulgaria

"Lincoln Mitchell has written a sober, concise, and thought-provoking analysis of the color revolutions in the former Soviet Union. As both a scholar and practitioner, he offers a unique and nuanced perspective on issues central to those revolutions and to regime change more broadly. His book is a must-read for anyone who wants a clear-eyed vision of the opportunities and pitfalls of democracy promotion in the twenty-first century."—Lucan Way, Associate Professor of Political Science, University of Toronto

"Although analytic reflections on the Color Revolutions are accumulating, nothing available matches this book's scope and depth. Mitchell's account, consistently searching and thorough, balanced and judicious, leads to some surprising and weighty conclusions that challenge the existing conventional wisdom on the Color Revolutions. It will likely stand for many years as the definitive work on the subject."—Thomas Carothers, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace

Review
Do not be fooled by size or the title of this book.   I have been in leadership positions for over 30 years and truly enjoyed this style of writting. He points out the mistakes and before you know it you are on knees confessing that you have done the same. This is a must read for every executive in your company.  - mby Manual Hernandez.

From the Author
I originally wrote The Top Ten Mistakes Leaders Make in the early 1990s. I had just turned forty and was relatively young in my leadership experience as a new CEO. The success of this book over the years has been encouraging, especially since most books by unknown authors never go into a second printing. I have heard from so many readers who could empathize with the issues I brought up. Most of the people I hear from suffer in some way under leaders who still don't get it: the servant collab- orative leadership style. They write to say thank you for giving them hope and new ideas of how to do leadership right. With all that has been writ- ten about empowering leadership styles, my observation still holds true that it is not a natural part of human nature. Unless leaders are out there learning and opening themselves to different ideas on how to lead, most will continue to default toward top-down leadership.

Leaders Beware!
By Daniel R. Mitchell
Finzel's book was written in '94, well before Kotter's "What Leaders Really Do" (written in '99) & Collins' "Good to Great" (written in '01). Finzel "outs" the most immediate perils to any leader's reign (top 10) & did so prior to the market research that Kotter & Collins offer. Kotter & Collins provide the data that supports Finzel's book, but Finzel's text is to the point & more eloquent. Pay special attention to mistakes #2 & 8. In today's corportae culture, not fitting the culture is a deal killer.

Refreshing, common-sense appraoch to leadership
By M. Berger
Hans Finzel makes the case that poor leadership habits are often the byproduct of observing others' poor leadership habits. This book suggests a concise list of such habits for leaders to dissect and change, with anecdotal examples as well as clear action items that can be implemented tomorrow morning.

Generally, Dr. Finzel solves his Top Ten list of mistakes using the strategies of servant leadership (the basis of the author's own success in church leadership), and he supports his writing with Biblical quotes and his own view on modeling one's actions after Christ's.

However, Finzel generally delivers plain-spoken, well-explained concepts that can be employed in most companies and organizations. Whatever your religion, his strategies embrace a positive, ethical approach to leadership that has been glaringly absent in many corporate American cultures in recent years.

This title probably didn't make a bestseller list, but it is a hidden gem for both established and emerging leaders who wish to prevent or improve upon common poor habits -- a refreshing change of pace from the mainstream best-sellers. For the price, it belongs in your leadership library.

Quick and to the Point
By Manuel Hernandez
Do not be fooled by size or the title of this book. Small which makes for a quick read and an excellent reference guide. The points that are developed are not rocket science stuff but points that are faced regularly. I have been in leadership positions for over 30 years and truly enjoyed this style of writting. He points out the mistakes and before you know it you are on knees confessing that you have done the same. I especially liked the chapters on "Dirty Delegation" and how it takes the wind out of the sail from any project. Leaders make this error in the name of geting things done. Another favorite of mine is, "Communication Chaos". This sole, small, simple chapter has changed how we communicate in our corporation. More info, relevant info, important info; info; info and more info. This chapter alone has increased our atmosphere of teamwork and productivity. This is a must read for every executive in your company.

Why I Became an Atheist: A Former Preacher Rejects Christianity (Revised & Expanded), by John W. Loftus

For about two decades John W. Loftus was a devout evangelical Christian, an ordained minister of the Church of Christ, and an ardent apologist for Christianity. With three degrees--in philosophy, theology, and philosophy of religion--he was adept at using rational argumentation to defend the faith. But over the years, doubts about the credibility of key Christian tenets began to creep into his thinking. By the late 1990s he experienced a full-blown crisis of faith.

In this honest appraisal of his journey from believer to atheist, the author carefully explains the experiences and the reasoning process that led him to reject religious belief. The original edition of this book was published in 2006 and reissued in 2008. Since that time, Loftus has received a good deal of critical feedback from Christians and skeptics alike. In this revised and expanded edition, the author addresses criticisms of the original, adds new argumentation and references, and refines his presentation. For every issue he succinctly summarizes the various points of view and provides references for further reading. In conclusion, he describes the implications of life without belief in God, some liberating, some sobering.

This frank critique of Christian belief from a former insider will interest freethinkers as well as anyone with doubts about the claims of religion.

the best popular level atheist book
By A. Scott
John's massively revised book surpasses the original in just about every way (the original was very good, so this is saying something). The sections on explaining faith, the cumulative method, and the reasons why theists reject the classical arguments for god greatly surpass anything in Hitchens, Dawkins, or Harris. Like in the first edition, he also does an excellent job explaining the way apologists use worldview and how his Outsider Test plays into this. On top of these more academic investigations, John explores the Bible (both Old and New Testament) and the historical Jesus. These will probably be more helpful in a casual level discussion of these issues.

If one seeks a good introduction to the arguments and nuances of "the God debates", this book is probably the best starting point because it goes over all of the relevant material but is not as technical as something like JL Mackie's classic The Miracle of Theism.

Wide Ranging and Excellent Overview
By Book Fanatic
This book is fairly content dense. It is 460ish pages. Of course given its comprehensive scope it can't go into any one topic in deep detail. So this book should be considered wide in scope not deep. It should not be criticized for this because its purpose is to go wide and not deep. I can (and have) read whole books on the individual issues (like argument from evil). If somebody wants to read a whole book on a particular topic they can. That's not the purpose of THIS book. Despite the wide scope, Loftus does an amazing job of distilling the essential points out of each topic. I say all this because a previous reviewer criticizes this book because it doesn't contain book length individual arguments inside itself. This same reviewer has made similar arguments on other book reviews and evidently doesn't see the complete absurdity of such a criticism. I guess he thinks books should be a million pages long.

This book by Loftus is heavily footnoted with references to longer treatments by authors on both sides of the issues he is addressing. I have added many books and articles to my list as a result of pursuing his footnotes.

Despite the wide scope, its arguments are cumulative. The same point made on one issue usually applies to another so considered as a whole it does indeed make what I consider a quite formidable case. I haven't read any previous versions of this book so I have no idea how this edition compares to those. I do know that THIS edition is very well done. It does an excellent job of giving an overall and comprehensive view of why someone would or should become an atheist.

Recommended.

Extremely thorough treatment of atheism
By Paula L. Craig
I wish I'd had this book back when I was 15 or 16 years old. I would have become an atheist much, much sooner than I actually did. Instead, I wasted decades trying to make Christianity work for me. For years I thought my problems with my church were due to my not being good enough or spiritual enough. Well, turns out that I had actually been the victim of a con going back centuries.

The best part about this book is its thoroughness. It covers absolutely every angle of why religion in general and Christianity in particular should be rejected. The philosophical arguments are covered. Problems with the Bible are discussed. It's great. If you can only read one book on atheism, it should be this one.

Be warned that this book is for serious readers willing to invest a lot of time. If you're looking for something short and entertaining, you might want to try some other book. Believing Bulls***: How Not to Get Sucked into an Intellectual Black Hole might be a better choice.

MIDNIGHT IN SAVANNAH…

It's a city of beauty, history…hauntings. And one of the most haunted places in Savannah is a tavern called The Dragonslayer, built in the 1750s. The current owner, Gus Anderson, is a descendant of the original innkeeper and his pirate brother, Blue.

Gus summons his granddaughter, Abigail, home from Virginia, where she's studying at the FBI Academy. When she arrives, she's devastated to find him dead. Murdered. But Abby soon learns that Gus isn't the only one to meet a brutal and untimely end; there've been at least two other victims. Then Captain Blue Anderson starts making ghostly appearances, and the FBI's paranormal investigation unit, the Krewe of Hunters, sends in Agent Malachi Gordon.

Abby and Malachi have a similar ability to connect with the dead…and a similar stubbornness. Sparks immediately begin to fly—sparks of attraction and discord. But as the death toll rises, they have to trust each other or they, too, might find themselves among the dead haunting old Savannah!

"Mr. Gordon, how were you able to find Joshua Madsen when the police were completely baffled as to where Bradford Stiles was keeping the child?"

That was the first question shouted, but there were dozens of reporters in front of the Richmond police station where Malachi Gordon had just finished the interviews and paperwork that completed the Stiles case as far as he was concerned. They were like a flock of ring-billed seagulls with their microphones.

Should've had someone sneak me out the back, he thought.

He raised a hand. "Please. It's been a long day and night for everyone involved."

At his side, Detective Andrew Collins supported his efforts to escape. "Everyone who worked this case is drained. There'll be a police spokesperson out shortly. Let Mr. Gordon pass!"

That didn't stop the barrage of questions or change the fact that Malachi felt as if he was being attacked by a flock of birds as he and Andy Collins made their way to the street and his SUV.

"Sorry," Andy muttered. "Should have—"

"Yeah, yeah, should've gotten me out through the back. Or maybe I could've called for a 'Beam me up, Scotty!'" Malachi said. "Not to worry—my mistake. I guess we're all worn out."

They reached the car, which was behind a police fence so the reporters couldn't follow them that far. As Malachi slid into the driver's seat, Andy asked, "How the hell did you find that cabin in the woods?"

"Pure luck, I think. We'd all fanned out. I just got to it first. It's my neck of the woods, so I pretty much knew where it couldn't be," Malachi said.

"Well, another few hours and… That boy owes you his life."

Malachi shook his head. "Everyone worked on this."

"But his mom came to you—and the case broke once you were on it," Andy said. "You know, if you admitted you were a psychic, no one would think less of you. I mean, yeah, some of those guys can be jerks, and they like to tease you about your voodoo powers and all that, but—"

"I can't admit I'm a psychic, Andy, because I'm not," Malachi told him. "I'm going to go home and get some sleep. You need to do the same."

"Sure thing. Thanks, Malachi."

"Yep," Malachi said. He hesitated. On a case like this, cops could be hard-asses. Big tough guys, they still felt fear. Not fear of a junkie or a drug dealer or even a brutal killer, but fear of what they didn't know or didn't understand. After he'd left the force in New Orleans, he'd preferred to work on his own for that very reason. As a P.I., he didn't mind working with them; he just didn't want to be one of them. That way when the ribbing got bad, he could always walk out.

Some cops, though, like Andy, were all right. They didn't understand. Maybe they were even a little afraid. But they were willing to accept any help they could get, and they weren't afraid to be grateful for it.

"Andy," he said, "thanks to you and your lieutenant for letting me in on this, and for listening to me. The kid owes you his life."

"Hell, yeah!" Andy said.

Grinning, Malachi waved to him and revved the car into gear, leaving the parking lot. He headed out of the city then, anxious to get away. He'd never expected the publicity that would come with this case. He'd taken it on because Joshua Madsen's mother, Cindy, had come to him. She had broken his heart. Joshua had been abducted during the two-block walk from his school bus to his home yesterday afternoon. A neighbor had seen a nondescript white van pull away, and when that news came out, police had immediately suspected Stiles, the Puppy Killer, as he'd been called.

Stiles didn't kill puppies; he used puppies to lure young people to his van. They'd rescued a litter of golden retriever pups and their mom when they'd found Stiles and Joshua Madsen.

Malachi didn't consider himself particularly brilliant in finding Stiles. The police investigative work had been excellent. They'd narrowed down the white vans in the city, thanks to the keen eye of the neighbor who'd managed to give them a partial on the license plate. Soil found on one of the victims had placed him in a certain area.

Malachi had known the area.

And he lived not twenty miles away in a home that was over two-and-a-half centuries old and came complete with pocket doors so that it could serve as a tavern, way station, home and hideout when need be. And it also came with Zachary Albright, Revolutionary spy and resident ghost.

No need to try explaining that to Andy, even if they were friends, or any of the other cops. Because, frankly, Zachary didn't have all the answers; being dead didn't make him omniscient. Just like he'd been in life, Zachary was a passionate man with a strong sense of right and wrong. He wandered the grounds, and he'd been the one to note the reclusive hunting lodge near the river. He'd suggested it to Malachi, and Malachi had remembered it—yes, the perfect place to bring a victim. Cries couldn't be heard and the sure-flowing water was always ready to wash away an abundance of evidence.

It occurred to him that he really shouldn't be thanked; he'd been observing the comings and goings on the trail when he was spotted by Stiles. He'd been forced to kill Stiles or be killed himself. The trail had led to a rundown shack but there'd been no sign of the missing boy. Police had searched the woods. Because of the "hideaway" in his own home—floorboards that lifted to reveal a six-by-six hidden room below—he'd begun to tear apart the shack. And he'd found Joshua Madsen, bound hand and foot, dehydrated, unconscious…but still alive.

Kids were resilient, he told himself. And this time, Stiles hadn't had a chance to abuse the boy. They got him to the hospital and he'd been returned to the loving arms of his family. He'd make it, Malachi believed, without carrying the kind of abuse that might have made him an abuser himself.

Malachi wished he could say that about all kids who were abducted.

It was late, past midnight, and once he took the ramp off I-64, the country road that would take him home was dark. He turned down the air-conditioning in his car. Summer was quickly changing into fall.

He pulled into his drive and entered the old house he'd inherited from his uncle, an academic who'd never married, thus leaving him the place in his will. Mala-chi had spent time with him there from when he was a kid. He'd loved it, and his parents had owned a home just minutes away in a suburb of Richmond. He usually kept the pocket doors open. While the original structure had been maintained, it was also a home. It had always been a home, even when the original inhabitants had opened it as a tavern because of the economy. Yep, things didn't really change. Back in the 1700s, sometimes the only way to survive had been to serve up good old country fare and lots of locally brewed ale and use the home itself as income.

Malachi picked up his mail and dropped his keys on the side table as he walked in. He was immediately accosted by Zachary. Once, Malachi had been unnerved by the ghost. Now he was accustomed to Zachary, clad in the black frock coat and silk vest in which he'd been buried out back in the family cemetery.

"You found him?" Zachary asked anxiously. "We did. Thank you. If you hadn't mentioned that place—"

"You would've thought of it. Eventually."

"And the kid might have been dead by then."

"Your jacket!" Zachary said. He touched Malachi's arm. Malachi felt the movement of air around him, nothing else.

"The killer fired at me."

"Good God, man, he was close!"

"Too close. I shot back. He's dead."

"Quite fine!"

Malachi shook his head. "I didn't mean to kill him. We hadn't found the boy yet. But I assumed someone built the shack on the lines of old places like this, and I was right. Joshua Madsen was in the hideaway."

"So you saved him. Are you injured?"

"Only my pride. I didn't think Stiles had seen me. I was trying to watch the place and get closer, and I didn't realize he'd come out back. Not until the bullet grazed my shoulder. I liked this jacket—not as much as uninjured flesh, but—"

"Then, all ended well," Zachary broke in, pleased. "I'm out to tell Genevieve!"

The ghost turned and left him, moving through what was now the kitchen and outside, dissolving through the walls. He was heading to the small family cemetery in back, Malachi knew. Zachary's wife and children were there—the three who'd died as infants and the three who'd survived childhood diseases to adulthood. Many of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren were there, too. Malachi had asked him once why he stayed around when he missed his Genevieve so much. Zachary had told him, "I believe I will know when it's time for me to follow my love."

Malachi never reminded him that he hadn't known when it was time to hide from the British during the Revolution. Zachary had been caught spying. They'd intended to hang him but he'd escaped and yet, in escaping, he'd been mortally wounded and had died in the arms of his Genevieve, right in the house, in front of the large stone hearth.

Then again, Malachi mused, he hadn't been that bright himself. Stiles had almost caught him in the chest with a .45.

He walked into the kitchen to pour himself a shot of his favorite single-malt Scotch. As he did so, there was a tap at his door. He immediately stiffened.

Aw, come on! His address wasn't public. The damned reporters hadn't found him out here, had they?

He decided to ignore the summons and remained unwaveringly focused on his shot of Scotch.

His phone rang. He glanced at his caller ID as he passed it. The number was unavailable, so he didn't answer. The ringing stopped.

The pounding at the door began again.

Swearing, he strode over to it. He lifted the little cover on the peephole and looked out. He was ready to swing the door open, oh-so-ready to berate whoever was knocking at this time of night.

He stopped, surprised by the sight of three somber and distinguished-looking men in suits. One was elderly—possibly around eighty or so. The other two were tall and appeared to have Native American blood in their backgrounds, though mixed with some kind of Northern European ancestry.

The elderly man held a cell phone. He hit the keys.

Malachi's cell began ringing again.

Seriously, what the hell? These guys had his number and they knew where to find him.

He opened the door and scowled at the three of them.

"Mr. Gordon, we're sorry to disturb you, but we've been trying to reach you," the elderly gentleman said. He held up his cell phone with a shrug.

"I've been a little busy," Malachi said. "And it is—" he looked at his watch "—almost 3:00 a.m. Who are you? I don't mean to be rude, but I've had a long day and a longer night. What do you want?"

"Your unusual talent, Mr. Gordon," the elderly man said, offering his hand. "My name is Adam Harrison. These are agents Jackson Crow and Logan Raintree."

"Uh, great, nice to meet you. What unusual talent?"

"The kind explained by your roommate," one of the other men said. Raintree, Malachi thought.

"My roommate?" Malachi said.

Raintree indicated someone who stood behind Malachi.

Malachi turned. Zachary was back in the house, watching him—and the newcomers—with obvious amusement.

"I believe these gentlemen see me, Malachi," Zachary said.

"Yes, we see you," the man introduced as Crow acknowledged. "May we come in, please? You had a long and fruitful day, and we're pretty sure you don't intend to stop when it comes to protecting the innocent who are in imminent danger."

"We believe we can make you an offer you can't refuse," Adam Harrison said.

Harrison. Malachi thought he knew the name. Harrison had been around a long time; he was known for solving some horrible crimes, some cases that.

Were unusual.

That had some kind of.

Ghosts.

He opened the door. "Okay, come on in, but I was about to have a Scotch. You can join me or not. I'll listen to you—but that's it. I'll listen."

Harrison walked in, followed by the other two. Mal-achi closed the door behind them.

They saw Zachary.

He asked them to go ahead and sit down in the old parlor by the huge stone hearth. Back in the kitchen, he scooped ice into glasses and poured Scotch.

He paused, then added a second shot to his own.

He had a feeling his life was about to change.

"One day I'll fall, but I will fall to the law on the high seas, and not to the likes of you, Scurvy Pete! I will go with my ship—and not with the dregs of the sea!"

"To the death, Blue Anderson! To the death!"

The two young fencer/actors played out the battle between Blue Anderson and Scurvy Pete Martin with passion and panache on a raised all-weather stage at the far side of the Dragonslayer parking lot. They were decked out in full pirate gear, colorful flared and embellished jackets swirling around them as they accomplished each choreographed step.

The wench they fought over—a British admiral's daughter named Missy Tweed—cowered in a corner while they fought. She was customarily played by a pretty young blonde from the local arts academy. Eyewitness accounts of the encounter in the river between the two pirates described Blue as a hero, even if he'd been a pirate. But Blue was known for being a staunch Englishman above all else; he didn't mind sacking a non-British ship of her treasure, and he only went to battle against enemies of the Crown. Blue swore he'd never be caught, nor would he abandon his crew. He never was caught; he sailed away one summer when storms were rampant and wasn't seen again.

The tourist performance—and come-on for the restaurant—ended with the death of Scurvy Pete, and Blue's announcement, "The lady may bring riches, but she'll not be disrespected whilst in my, er, care!" Abigail applauded with the others. She knew the two young actors playing the parts. Blue was played by Roger English, an old friend; they'd graduated from high school together. Without his long dark braided wig and beard, he had sandy-blond hair and deep brown, expressive eyes. Roger, who was an avid fan of Savannah's history, also ran one of the best ghost tours in the city.

She smiled, thinking about old times. Even as a kid, he'd loved to tell scary stories, some from history and some he'd made up. It had all paid off for him in the end.

Scurvy Pete was played by Paul Westermark, who'd gradated in the class before them. Paul sometimes worked for Roger, but he was also an accomplished vocalist and guitarist and spent many nights playing local venues.

While their audience, collected from passersby on the street and those who knew that the two pirates performed on Saturdays, grouped around to congratulate them on their performance or ask "pirate" questions, Abby hurried around to the front to reach the restaurant.

She was anxious.

Come home. I need you.

That cryptic summons had come from Gus Anderson, her grandfather, and had brought Abigail Anderson driving down from Virginia. He hadn't wanted to talk to her about "the situation" on the phone; he needed to see her in person. She feared the worst. Gus was in his early nineties and even if he was in excellent shape for his age, he was certainly no spring chicken. And while she would've dropped anything in the world to come home if he was in trouble, she couldn't help but marvel at his timing. She'd finished at the academy, and she was now waiting for her actual assignment. That made it a perfect time for her to drive home.

Love the Krewe - this one was ok.
By Allicat
I love the Krewe of Hunters - I love seeing familiar characters come back to make an appearance in a minor role in subsequent books. Sure they are always "paler" versions of themselves as they take a backseat to the new male and female romantic leads but it's still nice to see them again.

One day I'm going to have to ask Ms Graham why the majority of her male lead character needs to have a dead wife or fiancee in his past and why the majority of female leads has lost both parents (even though they are relatively young).

This book was OK. It had the standard gorgeous girl and "ruggedly handsome" man who meet and fall into bed within a few days, murders, plethora of suspects and smattering of ghosts. The "clue" was a dead giveaway to the murderer so no surprises at the end for me. As sometimes happens in her books the romance felt a little forced and this time the supporting characters (non Krewe) lacked personality.

As I've said before - Ms Grahams books are so similiar that if you love one you will most likely at least like them all.

The Night is Alive
By Donna Simmonds
For anyone that knows me they know I love Heather Graham's books and while this one is no exception it is also one of my favorites so far. I think all the Krewe books are great and interesting. But this one drew me in more than the others. I loved the backdrop and background she included and the setting was well detailed and described so it almost became its own character in the story. Along with pieces of the history that has taken place in Savannah you could really envision the locations where the story took place.

The mystery was intriguing and kept me guessing. I thought the main characters had a great history and development. And watching them learn to trust each other and learn to get along and work together provided a great piece to the story. The secondary characters as well were interesting and some played a key part in the story. Also it was nice to see some of the other Krewe members make an appearance.

As I said the mystery was well developed and played perfectly with the setting. We were kept guessing with the characters as to who did it all the way up to the end. And it was definitely a complete surprise.

The Krewe books are some of my favorites and I look forward to the next one. Anyone who hasn't read them yet should definitely start. And you can start anywhere with them, while characters might reoccur, the current story is completely contained in each individual book.

I loved this book! The character involvement was great & the true killer was a surprise until almost the last second.

I have to say that I hope we see Blue, Abby, Malachi & Zachary again in the near future!
