Historians have often marginalized the effect of African American troops on the outcome of the Civil War. While many histories briefly mention the service of the blacks, few reveal their impact. Lorenzo Thomas was one of the most exceptional people to serve in that war, but no biography of his life has been written. Most of his career was spent as an administrator in the U. S. Army, from his graduation from West Point in 1823 until the start of the war when he was the army's Adjutant General. His life changed when he was charged by Secretary of War Stanton to go West and recruit troops for the Union that were desperately needed. Stanton and Thomas did not get along and with pressure mounting to get more troops, Stanton saw this as an opportunity to get Thomas out of Washington. Thomas did exceptionally well in recruiting tens of thousands of troops for the Union. After the war ended, President Andrew Johnson replaced Stanton with Thomas as temporary Secretary of War. This precipitated the impeachment hearings against Johnson and some say that the testimony of Thomas caused the impeachment of Johnson to be dismissed.

'1875) fought Seminoles and Mexicans with commendable skill, but is best remembered as a staff officer, notably as Adjutant General of the Army from early in 1861 until 1869, with a brief hiatus from 1863 until 1865, when he recruited African-American personnel in the Mississippi Valley. In this short biography, retired army officer Eggleston, author of The Tenth Minnesota Volunteers, 1862-1865: A History of Action in the Sioux Uprising and the Civil War, with a Regimental Roster, The White Man's Fight: How African Americans in the Civil War Won the Confidence of the Nation and the Price They Paid, and other works on the war, concentrates on Thomas' role in raising the "U.S. Colored Troops." Although Eggleston lends some credence to the "Black Confederate" myth, he nevertheless concedes that the overwhelming majority of African-Americans, free or slave, willingly served the Union. He gives us a concise overview of the decision to recruit black troops, the political, military, and social problems this engendered, the experiences of the troops from their poor pay, equipment, and training to their often stellar performance on the battlefield, and more. In addition, Eggleston adds an account of Thomas' role in helping Andrew Johnson during the president's impeachment. A useful look at one of the forgotten men of the Civil War and at the U.S.C.T.'
