The First Prejudice

I think the book is a must read for those who are interested in American colonial and early national history, but beyond that it is indispensable for a dimensional understanding of the complex subject of religious toleration and liberty of conscience. The words we use nowadays when we discuss this subject are flung about with cavalier abandon without any sense of sublety, nuance or historical meanings. The First Prejudice explores and helps describe the many cultural, social, religious, economic, political and intellectual forces at work over the centuries in this area. The book's treatment of the subject's complexities and its conflicting story elements will make any reader, perhaps for the first time, recognize that this is an area that is filled with no easy answer. More importantly, it points us toward the formation of much better questions and that is serious progress.
