About the Author
Paul Willetts is the author of four acclaimed works of non-fiction, the latest of these being Rendezvous at the Russian Tea Rooms. Since making his literary debut with a biography of the Soho writer and dandy, Julian Maclaren-Ross, he also edited four much-praised collections of Maclaren-Ross's writing. In parallel with these projects, he compiled and worked as co-photographer on Teenage Flicks, a jokey celebration of Subbuteo, featuring contributions by Will Self, Graham Taylor, David Baddiel and others. His journalism has appeared in the Independent, The Times, TLS,Spectator, Independent on Sunday and other publications.

Informative biography of one of Britain's slap-and-tickle magnates

Paul Raymond was an extremely rich businessman who preferred to call himself an "adult entertainer" rather than pornographer. Beginning in the late 1950s, he built an adults-only empire that included his first major success, the Raymond Revuebar with its barely (if at all) clad dancers, other bars, restaurants, magazines, a few films and, very importantly, real-estate, primarily in Soho, which was changing in the decades immediately preceding his death (2008)from the red-light area he began his career in into a gentrified artsy neighbourhood (though many artists preferred it the old way). This well-researched, amusingly written biography does a lot to inform the reader not only of Raymond (born Quinn and raised Catholic, a religion he never truly abandoned), but of the times he lived in and British laws governing pornography and adult entertainment. The Windmill Theatre is mentioned. Raymond's personal life contained difficulties: a barely acknowledged illegitimate son, a daughter whom he groomed to inherit his business but who died of substance abuse, a failed marriage. Raymond himself had an ambivalent, sometimes contradictory attitude to how he made his money: he would criticize others in his business for overstepping boundaries of decency. Yet he was once considered to be one of Britain's wealthiest men, dying at a ripe old age after having basically lived the life he wanted to.
