Edward J. A land area six times the size of Manhattan was flooded, destroying 200,000 homes and leaving most of New Orleans under water for 57 days. No American city had sustained that amount of destruction since the Civil War. But beneath the statistics lies a deeper truth: New Orleans had been in trouble well before the first levee broke, plagued with a declining population, crumbling infrastructure, ineffective government, and a failed school system. Katrina only made these existing problems worse. To Blakely, the challenge was not only to repair physical damage but also to reshape a city with a broken economy and a racially divided, socially fractured community.
My Storm is a firsthand account of a critical sixteen months in the post-Katrina recovery process. It tells the story of Blakely's endeavor to transform the shell of a cherished American city into a city that could not only survive but thrive. He considers the recovery effort's successes and failures, candidly assessing the challenges at hand and the work done—admitting that he sometimes stumbled, especially in managing press relations. About the Author
Edward J. Blakely is Professor of Urban and Regional Planning Policy and Director of the Planning Research Centre at the University of Sydney, Australia. He is the author of four books and more than 100 scholarly articles. His publications include Separate Societies: Poverty and Inequality in U.S. Cities and Planning Local Economic Development: Theory and Practice. Henry Cisneros is former United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.

A Perfect Merde Gras

Edward J. Blakely continues to perpetuate the fantasy in his own mind that he did anything less than fail in every way possible during his tenure fleecing the citizens of New Orleans while he pretended to aid the city of New Orleans recover from Hurricane Katrina (he did not, in fact, do a heck of a job, Brownie). The mindless drivel in this piece of work is both mind numbing in its capricious tone and angering in its insincerity. The broad and subjective representation of the truth is not something that seems to be an issue here for Blakely, it gives him no more pause now than it did in the dark days when he was in New Orleans. If only the pages were softer, the book would serve the use of cleaning one's backside, but save for that it would make a mediocre door stop.

In which New Orleans was he doing all these wonder things? Certainly not the one in Louisiana. His descriptions of the inner workings of the city's administration ring true, and he did have these grand plans of which none have come to anything like fruition.
In brief avoid this bit of ego message for one of Nagin's cronies.

This should be categorized under fairy tales

As a former Oakland resident who lived there while the city was recovering from both the Loma Prieta quake and the Oakland Fire Storm (and when Blakely ran for mayor of the city), who moved to New Orleans before Katrina and has been involved in recovery issues, I can attest to the fact that Blakely's stint in New Orleans was anything but successful and he is not looked upon favorably by the city's community, business and nonprofit leadership. Far from the visionary recovery leader he marketed himself as, Blakely was a blowhard incapable of putting forth sellable ideas or gaining consensus. What he is good at doing was selling himself and overstating his success.
While he bills himself as integral to Oakland's success in recovering after two disasters, the fact that he barely got 3% of the vote when he ran for mayor is telling about how much the community thought he did in Oakland.
