Ferdinando Martini (Firenze, 30 luglio 1841 – Monsummano Terme, 24 aprile 1928) è stato uno scrittore e politico italiano. Fu senatore del Regno d'Italia nella XXVI legislatura. Marie-Henri Beyle, noto come Stendhal (Grenoble, 23 gennaio 1783 – Parigi, 23 marzo 1842), è stato uno scrittore francese. Amante dell'arte e appassionato dell'Italia dove visse a lungo, esordì in letteratura nel 1815 con le biografie su Haydn, Mozart e Metastasio, seguite nel 1817 da una Storia della pittura in Italia e dal libro di ricordi e d'impressioni Roma, Napoli, Firenze. Quest'ultimo fu firmato per la prima volta con lo pseudonimo di Stendhal, nome forse ispirato alla città tedesca di Stendal, dove nacque l'ammirato storico e critico d'arte Johann Joachim Winckelmann. I suoi romanzi di formazione Il rosso e il nero (1830), La Certosa di Parma (1839) e l'incompiuto Lucien Leuwen, scritti in una prosa essenziale che ricerca la verità psicologica dei personaggi, fanno di Stendhal, con Balzac, Hugo, Flaubert, Maupassant e Zola, uno dei maggiori rappresentanti del romanzo francese del XIX secolo: i suoi protagonisti sono giovani romantici che aspirano alla realizzazione di sé attraverso il desiderio della gloria e l'espansione di sentimenti appassionati.
