Giles Slade is the author of Made to Break: Technology and Obsolescence in America, which won the IPPY gold medal for best environmental book of 2007. He writes regularly for the Huffington Post and is featured in The Light Bulb Conspiracy, a MediaPro documentary about planned obsolescence that premiered on European television in seven languages in 2011.

More than a critique of social media - a history of modern mediated isolation

Having not yet read this through, I can't comprehensively assess it. But I can state that it's impressed me mightily so far. Slade tells the story of, among other things, recorded music and its consumption (solitary listening) as a substitute for musical communion: a twentieth-century harbinger of the more thorough, twenty-first-century assault on relationships among neighbors and on the social fabric of creative life.

I see some of my process and dissatisfactions explained well, with a long historical context. Enlightening. Some interesting digressions. The evolution of mistrust, urban people avoidance, solitary music listening, celebrity making, marketing, consumer personality, personal growth as self marketing, all worthwhile topics. Well titled.

Giles speaks the truth of the tech world, the "new world we live in" I felt or experienced much of what he writes about...therefore I validate his book...his book is well written, easy to understand.
While there's many features of tech that is good, but many that are not.
It's necessary to find a balance with most of the tech ...while difficult to do that. "good common sense should prevail.
