Sheldon Bach is clinical professor of psychology at the New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychoanalysis, a training and supervising analyst at the New York Freudian Society, a fellos of the Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research, and a member of the International Psychoanalytical Association.

The Subjective Experience of Narcissistic Patients

Bach focuses on the subjective suffering of this patient, a pervasive experience of intense psychic pain expressed through anxiety, depression, rage, or somatization. He introduces the concept of states of consciousness, showing that the development of self and acquiring awareness to view the self is difficult for this patient. These personal worlds are the boundaries within which the analyst can connect with this patient. The patient then feels free to redefine boundary issues and personal worlds. The writer is a gifted clinician who shows theory in action, enabling the analyst to be comfortable letting the patient be in charge of treatment in ways that are internally necessary for the patient and the process.
