From Publishers Weekly
FBI agent Colin Donovan and art crimes expert Emma Sharpe are exploring their romantic relationship when a crisis comes to put them both at risk. Tatiana Pavolva, a Russian jewelry designer, comes to Heron's Cove to warn Emma about a prominent collection of Russian Art Nouveau jewelry that has fallen into the wrong hands. The collection, originally discovered by Russian billionaire Dmitri Rusakov, had disappeared long ago and has now resurfaced in the possession of Natalie Warren, the daughter of Rusakov's ex-wife. She is intent on selling it back to Rusakov for a large profit. Sharpe and Donovan start investigating and it becomes clear that Rusakov and the collection are in some way tied to arms dealers who are hunting down Donovan to settle old scores. Natalie is in league with the arms dealers, and everyone, from Donovan to Rusakov, is in danger. Neggers's newest is a scattered and confusing thriller, overstuffed with characters and in a meandering plot. Perhaps readers who met Donovan and Sharpe in previous work will connect with the characters better, but readers new to the story may not return for more from Neggers.(Aug.)

"Carla Neggers has emerged as the queen of the romantic suspense novel...Heron's Cove is a novel that is written with a gripping and suspenseful style that will surely have the most astute armchair sleuths and amateur detectives scratching their heads and guessing right up until the very end. fast-paced romantic suspense
By A Customer
FBI undercover agent Colin Donavan and special agent Emma Sharpe met at the Sisters of the Joyful Heart in Maine when respective religious mentors asked each for help (see Saint's Gate). Attracted to each other, the two feds are seeing one another.
Currently the pair is in his hometown of Heron's Cove, Maine when jewelry designer Tatiana Pavlova arrives in town from London to ask Emma for help. Tatiana explains that someone plans to steal a prized collection recently found. She proves right that trouble is coming to Heron's Cove in which the unknown adversary has no qualms with collateral damage occurring to the families and friends of the two FBI agents.
The second Donavan and Sharpe fast-paced romantic suspense returns the two intriguing Feds who find love a distraction as they work the Russian case; as once again the fine arts prove deadly. With a clever villain hidden in plain sight, the romance playing second fiddle to the whodunit, and the return of cast like Father Finian Bracken, readers will enjoy this exciting Maine mystery mindful of early Savich and Sherlock (by Catherine Coulter).

Agonizingly Slow Plot/Unlikely Scenario & Dialogue
By Marinite
I wanted very much to enjoy this book, as its main setting is a geographical location that I like, and the story synopsis on the dust jacket intrigued me. Rarely do I quit a book once I've started it, but I abandoned this one twice, only picking it up again in desperation, as I'd exhausted all other reading material while on vacation. For the first two-thirds of this book, the pace of the story is excruciatingly slow, with an inordinate amount of text spent repeating dialog and/or a character's thoughts, or describing their movements from one house/location to another, with the timing curiously out of synch when those characters are to meet up at a later time/place (i.e., characters leave a location at the same time, planning to meet up elsewhere at a later, specific time -- say five minutes -- but their individual activities between leaving one place and arriving at another may take one character only those five minutes; meanwhile, the other character engages in activities that clearly would require much more time, yet the same amount of time elapses for each before they meet again at the agreed-upon time -- almost as mind-boggling as this run-on sentence!). This may seem like a niggling detail, but added to the stilted dialogue, which seems to be made up of conversational non-sequiturs and remedial-reading style repetition, I was prompted to shuffle back and forth between pages to see if I'd missed some important details or had inadvertently skipped ahead a page or two. And the unusual dialogue isn't attributable to Maine's famously dry, no-nonsense "Down East" conversational style -- the same off-kilter conversations take place between most of the characters, whether Irish, American or Russian. The plot scenarios seem unlikely as well, with characters often behaving in a strangely impetuous/unseemly manner, especially given the exacting nature of their particular vocations. When the action and dialog switches to Agent Sharpe's brother and family in London and Ireland, the narrative and dialogue seem much more normal, and follow more logical behavior patterns. Most of the main characters are likeable, more or less believable and interesting, in as much as we can get to know them. But as a whole, this book is an odd, frustrating read -- a bit like trying to wade into a breakwater of Jello at high tide before reaching more predictable seas. It would have been easier to toss this book aside if it were not otherwise the work of a seemingly intelligent and interesting writer whose protagonists are nonetheless compelling, probably because they seem so unfathomable -- either through poor character development or by design. The pace picks up in the last third of the book (as if the author decided to stop messing about, and was rushing to meet a publishing deadline), with the characters speaking and behaving more like real people, and the plot coming to a tidy, if not exactly exciting end.

So repetitive, almost no action or suspense. A page-don't-turner.
By Elizabeth Davies
Emma thinks: I'm an FBI agent. Colin thinks: "I'm an FBI agent.
Emma: I'm an FBI agent. Can you tell me about--
Colin: You know I can't. I'm an FBI agent.
Emma: Me, too. Before that, I was a nun. I just met a Russian or two.
Colin: You were a nun once. Please tell me about Russians--
Emma. I'm also an FBI agent, so I can't tell you. By the way, I used to be a nun.
Colin: Some people just tried to kill me, and they surely know I'm here, but I'm not worried about that. I do suspect my brothers know I'm the kind of FBI agent who's in danger a lot.
Emma: I understand. You're sure sexy. And you're an FBI agent. Russians are in town. I can't tell you that, but I know you guessed so I can say it.
Colin: So are you. Sexy. For an FBI agent. Want to have sex? How 'bout them Russians?
Emma: Not right now. Hey, didn't we have sex a few months ago? Also, my family investigates art thefts.
Colin: Got to go--something strange keeps happening. Drugs or art theft or murder, maybe. I have to keep checking on stuff to do with Russians because I'm--
Emma: An FBI agent. I know. Me, too.
Colin: One day you'll have to reconcile all those parts of you--you know, FBI agent, former nun, sexy woman.
Emma: Not necessary. Did I mention that I used to be a nun? Got to go--something strange keeps happening. I have to keep checking on stuff because I'm also a former expert in art theft.
