About the Author
JOHN E. DOUGLAS has been an FBI agent for over thirty years. One of the most successful and best-known true crime authors in the country, his many books include the New York Times bestseller Mind Hunter, which first introduced the public to the idea of psychological profiles as a tool in hunting down killers.
ANN W. BURGESS, RN, DNSc, is the author of nine textbooks on psychiatric nursing and crisis intervention and ten books on assessment and treatment of child, adolescent, and adult sexual assault victims and serial offenders.
ALLEN G. BURGESS is a former associate professor in the College of Business Administration at Northeastern University in Boston.
ROBERT K. RESSLER, MS, is a twenty-year veteran of the FBI. He developed many of the programs that led to the formulation of the FBI's National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime.

This Book Has Everything

If you have read about true crime you've probably read John E. Douglas, Ann W. Burgess, and Robert K. Ressler. These experts and Allen G. Burgess are the authors of this Crime Classification Manual.
If you are curious enough to read this review I think this 544 page volume (plus index) will fascinate you. The manual, according to the authors has received notice from FBI Investigative profilers, law enforcement officers, corrections and parole staff, mental health staff and students in forensic and criminal justice studies.
The crime Classification Manual is similar to the Diagnostic and Statistic Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) used by the psychiatric community to diagnose patients and facilitate communication and research (and debate) within the mental health field.
The stated purpose of this volume is to:
Standardize terminology within the criminal justice field; facilitate communication within the CJ field and between criminal justice and mental health; educate the CJ system and the public, and to develop a data base for investigative research.
The manual is divided into three sections: Crime analysis and Investigation, Classification of Crime Categories and Legal Issues.
Each crime includes victimology, crime scene indicators, staging, common forensic findings and investigative considerations and is followed by a case study.
There are five chapters about Homicide, and chapters about Arson/Bombing, Rape and Sexual Assault, Nonlethal Crimes, Computer Crimes, Increased Globalization of Crime, Mass and Serial Homicide and Poison and Biological weapons.
What makes this book so fascinating are the case studies.
This is a reference book. It is not the kind of book that is meant to be read from cover to cover but here's a warning: you may plan to spend only minutes with this manual but you'll wind up spending hours.
This book is a must read for anyone who is interested in true crime.

DSM wasn’t really a good fit for criminologists

In Crime Classification Manual: A Standard System for Investigating and Classifying Violent Crime, Douglas et al describe where this book came from, which informs the entire rest of the discussion. Earlier on in profiling, there was a general attempt to work with the DSM III (now V), the Diagnostic and Statistics Manual (APA), which was itself intended to help standardize diagnoses’ in psychiatric disciplines. Before DSM came out, Psych diagnoses were at times badly disorganized.
However, DSM wasn’t really a good fit for criminologists. For instance, the focus in the DSM quite appropriately is often on the patient’s perception; not so much the attendant facts; great for the clinical or practicing psychologist but not so for the investigator, profiler, &c.
The profile of a crime may well lend itself to quite a few DSM axes. This doesn’t help classifying the crime nor the types of offenders. And so Douglas, Ressler, et al, came up with the idea to create a DSM for crime. This is what you’re seeing before you.
This is an excellent early attempt to do something that is amazingly difficult. When one looks at the history of criminal classification, then looks at the CCM, this is a splendid step forward. But it’s far from the end. Lots needs to be done on this in order for it to achieve the encyclopedic gravitas of the DSM (also, the DSM is deeply involved in how to charge for services – one reason it’s so widely accepted). For instance, Douglas points that the original classification of crime scenes as Organized or Disorganized wasn’t ideal in that any given crime scene may show components of each.
As such, this book isn’t offered as a pure textbook nor as a source whose only purpose is to convey pure information. Instead, this is one of the most recent academic works attempting to scientifically define the various identifiers for violent crime.
I think it’s an excellent read, a noble effort, and nowhere near the last word on this broadening subject.

Great Information - Not Sensationalized

The primary purpose of the "Crime Classification Manual" is to help create "a standard system for investigating and classifying violent crime." Standardizing the terminology and classifications of can seem like dull stuff. But it's very important in a practical ways. For example, you can hardly write a law concerning punishments for different types of crimes without agreeing on definitions of those crimes.
I do not have the previous 2 editions, but if you do and are wondering about the changes in the Third Edition, here is what the authors say:
A) New coverage of wrongful convictions and false confessions
B) Expands and introduces new areas affected by globalization as well as new technologies. Examples: human trafficking and international cybercrimes
C) Expands sections on border control, The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), as well as Homeland Security
D) Updates all sections as far as how new technologies are changing how crimes are committed and how they are detected
This is fascinating reading. Facts are stated without sensationalism, so it can get a little dry. But this isn't meant to be a true-crime novel, so if you don't expect it to be, you'll find it interesting.
For each type of murder, such as Contract Killer, you'll read sections on:
1. Defining Characteristics. Victimology: What will you usually find out about the victim of a contract killing. For example, "the victim's risk is situational. It is the offender's perception of the victim as an obstacle that puts the victim at risk. The risk for the offenders (contractor and killer) is dependent on their relationship with each other and the experience and expertise of the offender."
Crime Scene: What is usually found at the scene of a contract killer. One thing you almost never see is "staging", except for when the killer was supposed to make the death appear as an accident or suicide. What information does forensics usually turn up on a contract killing. Read the book and find out.
2. Investigative considerations. These are factors that may help you zero in on suspects. For example: "The nature of the crime ensures the existence of a conspiracy for all offenders. Scrutiny of a suspect's preoffense contacts... and communications may provide evidence."
3. Search Warrant Suggestions.
4. Case Study. A real example of the crime is given, with all the parts of 1., 2. and 3., above, set out, as well as the Outcome.
Incidentally, a Contract Murder is a classification 101. Class 127 is Extremist Homicide. The latter is further divided into 127.01 Political, 127.02 Religious, and 127.03 Socioeconomic/Hate. If you want useful reporting, statistics and comparisons, you need everyone using the same classification system.
Great lingo, too. Profiling is a form of "retro classification", because you are working backward. When investigating whether the same person performed different murders, you may be looking for a "signature" or "personation" = "criminal conduct beyond the actions needed to perpetrate the crime". He doesn't just strangle his victims, he afterwards cuts off an ear.
Which does bring up another point. I described the writing as sometimes dry, because the Crime Classification Manual is written like a textbook. But this Manual covers violent crimes, mostly homicides, and the case studies can be grim in the extreme, even though they aren't sensationalized.
The last two chapters of the Manual are the most interesting of all. "Interviewing, Interrogation and Criminal Confessions" and "Wrongful Convictions: Causes, Solutions and Case Studies".
All in all, a very interesting book. This manual states that it is written for "law enforcement personnel, mental health professionals, forensic scientists and those whose work requires an understanding of criminal behavior and detection." I am writing this review, however, from the perspective of the interested amateur from two standpoints: A wish to understand more of how criminal apprehension and understanding works in real life when reading or watching TV involving true crime, and, secondly, as a person who appreciates realistic mystery novels, and would like to write her own one day.
