About the Author
James Lull (San Jose, CA) is a distinguished international authority on the impact of mass media, communications technology, and popular culture. He has published twelve books, as well as dozens of journalarticles, chapters, and essays, and has lectured throughout the world on the interplay between communication and culture. He has also appeared as a commentator on CNN, CNN Headline News, the BBC, NPR, and other media outlets, and he has written essays for the Los Angeles Times, the International Herald Tribune, the San Francisco Chronicle, and others. He is professor emeritus of communication studies at San Jose State University. Eduardo Neiva (Birmingham, AL) is a leading authority on how visual images influence culture. He is the author of two books in English on communication, culture, and images, and many books in Portuguese. He was a Fulbright research scholar at Indiana University. He is professor of communication studies at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

learning the language of life

There is a lot to like about this book.It does a compelling job of tying current issues in social and cultural life with the hard science of evolution.Grounded in a broad range of scientific evidence and research, the authors try to promote greater awareness of the communication aspects of biological evolution and cultural development. That makes the book unique and useful. I found the volume to be engaging from the first chapter that explains "The Great Chain of Communication" to the final chapter focused on technological change. The Language of Life is a great read for anyone who wants to understand how communication influences our common humanity. It would also be an excellent option for the novice because it blends together multiple streams of evolutionary theory in a very understandable way.

A Must Read

This is a grand book of almost unimaginable scope. It bears reading more than once. Anyone who has a serious interest in the study of communication will be inspired by its lucid, richly documented exposition on the seminal role that communication plays in biological evolution and the development of human culture. And even those who are familiar with evolutionary theory will be delighted by the nuanced treatment Lull and Neiva give to Darwin's personal struggles with the moral and theological implications of his own discoveries. Although these authors never violate the naturalistic limits of evolutionary theory, they are still able to offer a hopeful vision for humanity that is both honest and credible. A must read for anyone who cares about human origins and potentials.

The Language of Life. How Communication Drives Human Evolution is stylishly written with impressive clarity. Lull and Neiva argue that since the earliest life forms, a `great chain of communication' has driven the evolutionary process in biological and cultural terms. What the authors do to argue their case throughout the book becomes an astounding theoretical pirouette full of acrobatic turns. To read these guys is like seeing a theoretical spectacle on full display.
The book is provocative. Lull and Neiva propose and defend an understanding of communication as a process with the full force of a powerful dictum: "to survive, we have to cooperate, and to cooperate, we have to communicate." Human evolution is not just about survival of the fittest but also about the development of community, even at the global level. The authors undermine stereotypical understandings of evolutionary theory with a humanistic argument rooted in cooperation.
The book is purposeful. Their interpretation of life as interconnected by communication was a missing persepctive in social science until now. Lull and Neiva claim that "despite the critical link that connects communication and human evolution, the bulk of empirical research that supports the theory that human evolution has not impacted significantly the development of the theory of communication, and in turn, the communication process has been neither sufficient, nor adequately, integrated into the scientific narrative about human evolution." The authors offer a remedy for both shortcomings.
From my view here in Latin America, The Language of Life takes a groundbreaking step in the development of communication theory based in the actual history of biological and cultural beings that will produce vibrant and necessary discussions among scholars and others.
