About the Author
Vincent Pratchett hails from a family of Irish storytellers and English writers. Vincent is an accomplished martial artist and a professional firefighter with the Toronto Fire Department. This is his first novel. Vincent Pratchett resides in Toronto, Ontario Canada.

honesty is the best review

I am privileged and honored to be able to write reviews for YMAA. In order to be helpful and useful, reviews must be honest. To date, all my experiences with YMAA material have been four and five star worthy. This book is okay, it has some great food for thought. I especially liked the reference to the way Internal and External Martial Arts were taught and practiced. Hard arts practiced inside, hidden in a cave and soft arts practiced outside in the open. I had never heard that before and will do research on that point. The other sequence that caught my interest was the way the author described the holistic manner in dealing with the small pox plague. He tells of grinding scabs of infected people into a powder and then injecting it into well people. Interesting, I wonder if it was true.
The healer gets wounded at one point and she is subjected to a brutal treatment involving hammers, arrows, fire and herbs. Worth reading just to learn how that was done.
Now for the other side of the fivestar/onestar coin. I was very confused the entire first section of the book. It was hard to tell who was speaking, what time frame they were in and how all the characters fit together. There is an Historical Note on the last page of the book that, in my opinion, should have been in the very beginning in order to set the time frame and reason for the adventure. I didn't particularly care for the mixing of tales/Arthurian/Chinese/Celtic/Wizards/Witches, it was all too hard for me to follow in the first chapters of the book. Maybe younger, sharper minds might find it adventurous, I just found myself dazed and confused.
The author Vincent Pratchett, related by blood to renowned fantasy novelist Terry Pratchett, named the main character Vincent, later changed to Arkthar. I found myself thinking that the bespectacled Vincent on the back cover of the book wanted to be the Vincent/Arkthar of the story but the name just didn't sound right to my ears. Eric, Bjorn, Val,Thor might have made it easier to connect to the character.
So yinyang, goodbad, five/one, I gave this book a balanced three.

It's Okay, But It Could Have Been A Whole Lot Better

This book initially grabbed my attention for its premise, that however quickly dwindled down to almost nothing because of the confusing time I had with the beginning of the book. Now maybe that was just me, so take that with a grain of salt, but I really don't feel like this book lived up to its premise. The story could have been, and should have been, a whole lot better but it simply wasn't. The main problem I had was the author trying to interweave way too many different facets into the story. I found it to be a bit to confusing for my taste and had a difficult time talking myself into finishing the book. I did however, but it was a painfully slow process for me. I think a good rewrite of certain segments and some filler pieces would help the story immensely.
