Radiance from Halcyon: A Utopian Experiment in Religion and Science, by Paul Eli Ivey

In May 1904, the residents of Halcyon—a small utopian community on California’s central coast—invited their neighbors to attend the grand opening of the Halcyon Hotel and Sanatorium. As part of the entertainment, guests were encouraged to have their hands X-rayed. For the founders and members of Halcyon, the X-ray was a demonstration of mysterious spiritual forces made practical to human beings.

Radiance from Halcyon is the story not only of the community but also of its uniquely inventive members’ contributions to religion and science. The new synthesis of religion and science attempted by Theosophy laid the foundation for advances produced by the children of the founding members, including microwave technology and atomic spectral analysis. Paul Eli Ivey’s narrative starts in the 1890s in Syracuse, New York, with the rising of the Temple of the People, a splinter group of the theosophical movement. After developing its ideals for an agricultural and artisanal community, the Temple purchased land in California and in 1903 began to live its dream there.

In addition to an intriguing account of how a little-known utopian religious community profoundly influenced modern science, Ivey offers a wide-ranging cultural history, encompassing Theosophy, novel healing modalities, esoteric architecture, Native American concepts of community, socialist utopias, and innovative modern music.

Review
"As radiant as the utopian world it excavates, Paul Eli Ivey’s deeply researched and immensely original work provides an x-ray vision of an esoteric California on the edge of global Theosophy. Radiance from Halcyon is a mesmerizing tale of mystical kinship and communitarian experiments fusing architecture, landscape, music, and science that reverberate powerfully into the present." —Molly McGarry, author of Ghosts of Futures Past: Spiritualism and the Cultural Politics of Nineteenth-Century America

I Loved This Book!!!
By Gary Swimmer, Visual Artist
Paul Ivey's new book, Radiance from Halcyon, is a wondrously entertaining, inspired and scholarly exploration of the installation and development of a unique theosophical community in California. It is a fantastical, joyous romp through a myriad of esoteric, scientific, medical, social and political issues that defined the times and emanated from this grand experiment in the tiny town of Halcyon. In examining the lives, beliefs and actions of those who built, refined and defended Halcyon, the book is a study in the potential of committed action on the part of those with determination and good will to impact future generations in ways that radiate far beyond the scope of knowledge, action and achievement, if not beyond the dreams and visions, of a creative and flexible community that strived to link science and religion at the turn of the twentieth century.

an engaging portrait of a long-overlooked American Utopian experiment
By Kenneth Johnson
The Temple of the People is the smallest and least-known group in the family tree of the Theosophical movement. But its small membership has had a substantial cultural influence in twentieth century California, as described in Paul Ivey's Radiance from Halcyon. The group was the source of a burst of creativity that expressed itself in a wide array of endeavors. As an art historian, Ivey is well qualified to appreciate the group's unique contributions. His treatment of the Temple is profoundly sympathetic yet completely objective, striking a perfect balance.

The opening chapters set the stage with a chronological explanation of the Temple's emergence in the wake of the "Judge secession" crises of the mid-1890s and the subsequent splintering of American Theosophists into multiple competing sects. The author explains the community's relocation from Syracuse, New York to the California coast and the teachings conveyed by its leaders. In these chapters Ivey meets the standard set by the best Theosophical history books (notably Joscelyn Godwin's The Theosophical Enlightenment) in terms of thorough research and documentation, and the clarity of his writing. But the heart of the Halcyon story he tells is found not in the teachings of the leaders but in their implementation by the community members. The most memorable parts of Ivey's book are the later chapters, which are thematic rather than chronological in approach.`

Ivey explores the social/political experimentation of the group and its architectural, medical, musical, and fine arts expressions. Most surprising and interesting is the final chapter, depicting scientific advances produced by members of the community as an expression of its anticipation of "the Avatar." The other surviving branches of American Theosophy have inspired historical writing that ranges from uncritical propaganda to hypercritical debunking. The Halcyon group, in its obscurity, has been spared all such distorting accounts. As the sole author to explore its legacy in detail, Paul Ivey has surpassed all previous authors in the field of Theosophical history. Radiance from Halcyon is an engaging portrait of a long-overlooked American Utopian experiment. It is a must-read for anyone interested in Theosophy or the history of the central California coast, but any reader who appreciates unexplored byways of twentieth century spiritual movements will find it enjoyable and illuminating.
